The 7 Best Android Apps to Help You Solve Math Problems

Got a math problem to solve and need something more powerful than a regular calculator? These Android apps are the solution.

Math is one of the most stressful subjects you can face, and it's understandable. Whether you're good at it or not, solving complex math solutions can be challenging during concepts like calculus or trigonometry. And sometimes, even the fundamental arithmetic problems can give you trouble.

Luckily, there are a ton of apps that can help you solve math problems on your Android phone. Let's look at the best Android apps for improving your math skills.

1. Photomath

Photomath is a popular math solver app that uses augmented reality to solve math problems. It has an intuitive UI while offering plenty of functionality. All you need to do is point your camera at a math problem, or you can import a photo containing the problem from your phone, and it'll solve it for you.

Also, you get a dedicated calculator option that helps you input different problems. While solving them, it provides you with step-by-step guidance with animations and various methods.

Photomath is free to use with limited features. You'll have to subscribe to the Photomath Plus subscription to unlock features like animated tutorials, deeper explanations, hints, and many more. The subscription will cost you $9.99/month or $59.99/year.

2. Microsoft Math Solver

Microsoft's Math Solver offers a lot of the same functionality that you get in the Photomath app. It can solve various problems, including trigonometry, algebra, calculus, and word problems.

You can type, scan a handwritten math equation, or import one from your gallery, and you'll get a step-by-step explanation. You can go to history, check back on previously solved problems, and bookmark a specific maths problem if you want to revise it later.

On top of that, you get interactive graphs, daily practice quizzes, and online video lectures that give you a better grip on the topic. It supports multiple languages like Chinese, Hindi, French, Japanese, and many more.

This app also integrates into the Edge browser on the desktop, so you can use Microsoft Edge to solve math problems . The best part about the app is that it's free to use and doesn't contain any ads or in-app purchases.

3. Socratic by Google

Socratic is one of the Android apps from Google that you might have never heard of before. It covers math concepts like algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, and more. Apart from mathematics, it can help with various other topics like biology, chemistry, physics, history, and poetry.

You can scan math equations, word problems, physics questions, or anything else. It'll explain the question along with possible variations of the question and show related videos if it finds any. Given that it's a Google product, you will see most answers from Google search results and YouTube for videos.

The best part about the app is that it's completely free to use and doesn't contain ads throughout the app.

Mathway supports basic to complex mathematics concepts such as trigonometry, algebra, calculus, and many more.

Similar to the other apps on this list, all you've got to do is scan the math problem or type it manually, and Mathway provides you with the answer and explains the steps that led to the solution. When you want to input your equation manually, you get a dedicated keyboard with different functions and symbols.

The app's user interface is minimal and easy to follow. Mathway is free to use but to access features like step-by-step solutions and explanations, you'll need to upgrade to a subscription plan which costs $9.99/month or $39.99/year.

5. Camera Math

As the name suggests, Camera Math lets you solve math equations by taking pictures from your camera. It can help you with various math concepts like Calculus, Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, and others.

You can point the camera to a math question or import an image from your device to solve your problem. The app uses AI to extract the captured photo information and solve it for you with detailed steps. There's an Ask section in the app where you can ask tutors for help.

Furthermore, you get options like a dedicated calculator, decimal separator, and much more. Camera Math provides a 7-day free trial to decide whether to get the subscription plan, unlocking step-by-step solutions, removing ads, delivering faster solutions, and more. The Premium plan costs you $8.99/month and ranges up to $59.99/year.

Cymath is another excellent maths solver app that solves a variety of concepts like statistics, trigonometry, and calculus. Once you enter the app, you'll see a manual input option to enter your question. You can switch to the camera tab to scan it instead of manually entering it.

Cymath has an intuitive and simple-to-use user interface. It's available in four languages other than English. It has a Reference section that includes some basic formulas, rules, and equations that can help you.

Also, you can practice problems based on Pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Calculus in the Practice section, and there's a Blog section with a new problem and its solution every week. Cymath is free to use, but you can opt for the Premium subscription that costs $5/month, gets rid of ads, and provides a detailed explanation of steps, reference material, bookmarks, and more.

Great tool if you want to skip a hard question

I like math, most of you hate it or like it, and I like it, even though I like it, some questions are too hard for me, so I secretly take my phone out and take a picture of the problems I have trouble with, thanks to this app, I was able to solve problems while learning too, thanks to the person who made this, it’s also fun to write random problems in my notebook and scan them, the funny part is when I my friends wonder why I have so many equations, anyway it’s a good tool for math, improvements can be made though, there some bugs I ran into that glitches my calculator not gives wrong equations, ok that’s all

Somewhat thoughtful but...

I’ve had this app for awhile and I just want to address something. When I saw the app and the name it excited me and I thought I was gonna be able to use the camera like crazy due to stress with math lately even though I should try to learn what I’m struggling with I had found the app and thought I could relax. The app was helpful for a few hard questions on my math test but it only lets you snap a few questions before continuously asking to start a plan and pay money which I know for every app there’s something like this but thats really annoying. I only got through like two hard questions on my test bc it wouldn’t let me continue unless I pay which disappointed me. The quizzes are somewhat thoughtful and I like the idea of also having quizzes to practice so you understand. Also the “learn” area is also pretty thoughtful. I think it may be useful for kids and even teens and adults, specifically directing this to some that I saw like “Do My Grades Really Matter?” And another one I saw which I couldn’t help myself to read was “Noise Distraction”. As I think it was very nice to do that I’m still very upset that I can only use the camera only a few times.
Hello! Thank you for your comment. Certain functionality limitations in the app are compensated by the fact that it’s free. You can upgrade the app to access the extended functionality or continue to use the basic version that still comes with all of the essential options needed to check weather conditions. We appreciate your understanding!

Failed to provide provide steps

This is going to be somewhat of a long review. This app is a great app, but after a couple of weeks of using it I started getting a message of “Failed to provide steps, please try at a later time. So I did this several different times and got the same message. I deleted the app and reinstalled it thinking that would help and it didn’t. So I had emailed customer support two different times and still have not heard back. I really do enjoy the app and it was very helpful with my class, but when the app provides just the answer and not the steps it really defeats the purpose of learning how to do algebra not just get the answer. Unfortunately I have already paid for the app and now there’s only 3 weeks of my class help. So hope this review will help in case any others are having the same issue so the developer can figure this glitch out and get it fixed.
Thank you for reaching out. It's important that we understand how the issue occurred. Please, can you provide more details on this matter to our support service ([email protected])? We are willing to help.

8 Best apps that solve math word problems (Android & iOS)

best math solver apps

Are we at the pinnacle of digital technology in the world? Well, it doesn’t matter. Mathematics has been around for years, beginning in the 6th century BC when Phythogoreons, the ancient Greeks, formulated a systematic study of maths as a subject in its own right.

Since then, many mathematicians around the globe have played a significant role in developing mathematics as a full-fledged study that today we read as geometry, trignometry, differential, topology, e.t.c.

Fast forward to today, we now have the math solver apps to solve any math word problems at the tap of a button.

Had we envisaged it coming?. Now an app takes a picture of your homework, and gets answers without having you wrap your head around it.

This is nothing sort of a radical change in the system of education, but the results can be dire if students only stick to the math solver apps and do not manually attempt to solve problems.

However, A math word problem solver app doesn’t only scan and show the best answer but solves a question with steps, so students can learn to solve problems too. Without any delay, let’s jump to the best math solving apps.

We’ve looked through some of the apps providing math assignment help , and we’ve made a list of some of the best free apps that helps you solve math problems.

The Photomath app is undoubtedly one of the best apps you will encounter to help you with math problems. This app uses the camera on your phone coupled with augmented reality. All you need to do is to point your phone’s camera at the paper containing the equation or math problem you are looking to solve, and it will give you the answer. It reads the problem and solves it instantly, and all you need is your device’s camera. The state-of-the-art technology of Photomath allows it to read the problem and give the answer and show you step-by-step explanations for getting the right answer. It doesn’t matter how simple or complicated it is, whether it’s simple arithmetic or advanced calculus. Photomath is one app that is useful for both teachers and students alike in teaching and learning mathematics. It helps with understanding and interpreting the problem and also learning basic math concepts. This math-solving app is particularly useful for algebraic equations and fundamental arithmetic problems. Some of the math content supported by Photomath are numbers, decimals, fractions, roots and powers, algebraic expressions, complex numbers, quadratic equations/inequations. Others are linear equations/inequations, absolute equations/inequations, calculus, binomial theorem, and trigonometric equations.

Solve4x is another intriguing math-solving app. This app has an equation solver that allows you to type an equation manually and solve it for you. Another way is to snap a picture of the equation or check a photo that’s been saved to your gallery already. It will process the image and solve the equation automatically. This app functions with printed text, but some texts may still be garbled, so you might need to edit the text lightly after taking the picture.

While this app does not require many essay papers, one of its limitations is that it doesn’t support math problems that involve brackets. The idea behind this app is for parents to be able to confirm the results of their kids’ assignments without having to keep up with complex algebra and other math problems. If this is the case, you might want to keep smartphones away from your kids while doing their assignments.

The pathway mathematics problem-solving app works like an algebra calculator, offering instant answers to the most challenging math problems. This app can help you with any math problem, from simple math problems to more complex ones, calculus, trigonometry, algebra, geometry, etc.

The pathway app comes with the free version and the paid or subscription version. With the free version, all you get is just the answer to the math problem at hand, but the paid version will provide you with step-by-step solutions to the different math problems across various topics. This app is strongly recommended for all students that struggle with mathematics. It is also very straightforward with an intuitive interface and an excellent topic glossary.

Cymath is a math-solving app that offers dissertation help with different math topics in mathematics. Some of these topics are algebra, arithmetic, statistics, calculus, trigonometry, and other range of topics with its advanced artificial intelligence math problem solver . The Cymath app solves your mathematics problems in real-time across several topics. This app also gives you access to the solution to your math problem at no cost. So when you need help or are stuck on a math problem, the Cymath app is one you have access to. With this app, you can get all the necessary support you need on your math homework across different topics, algebra, graphing, calculus, etc. This app’s algebra calculator has various functions that range from exponential functions to logarithms and trigonometry.

MyScript Calculator

This math app can recognize your handwriting. This means that you will get answers to your math problem by merely writing the question on the screen. This app supports basic arithmetic with square roots and cube roots but not trigonometry, percentages, and logarithms.

While this app is a good one to use, it has its limitations because it might not always recognize your handwriting correctly. For example, you might have a problem getting it to perform a cube root calculation if it does not recognize what you have written properly. However, when it recognizes your handwriting and has the correct equation, it’s a fantastic app to have in your closet and will come in very handy for you.

There are many mathematics problem-solving apps available that you can use for free. The ones discussed in this article are some of the best that you can get for free. However, many other similarly free apps help you get your math problem solved without needlessly stressing yourself.

Apart from quick math answers, some of these apps also offer tutorials and simple step-by-step teachings that make it easy for you to learn, understand, and fall in love with solving mathematics.

Teens come up with trigonometry proof for Pythagorean Theorem, a problem that stumped math world for centuries

By Bill Whitaker

May 5, 2024 / 7:00 PM EDT / CBS News

As the school year ends, many students will be only too happy to see math classes in their rearview mirrors. It may seem to some of us non-mathematicians that geometry and trigonometry were created by the Greeks as a form of torture, so imagine our amazement when we heard two high school seniors had proved a mathematical puzzle that was thought to be impossible for 2,000 years.

We met Calcea Johnson and Ne'Kiya Jackson at their all-girls Catholic high school in New Orleans. We expected to find two mathematical prodigies.

Instead, we found at St. Mary's Academy , all students are told their possibilities are boundless.

Come Mardi Gras season, New Orleans is alive with colorful parades, replete with floats, and beads, and high school marching bands.

In a city where uniqueness is celebrated, St. Mary's stands out – with young African American women playing trombones and tubas, twirling batons and dancing - doing it all, which defines St. Mary's, students told us.

Junior Christina Blazio says the school instills in them they have the ability to accomplish anything.

Christina Blazio: That is kinda a standard here. So we aim very high - like, our aim is excellence for all students.

The private Catholic elementary and high school sits behind the Sisters of the Holy Family Convent in New Orleans East. The academy was started by an African American nun for young Black women just after the Civil War. The church still supports the school with the help of alumni.

In December 2022, seniors Ne'Kiya Jackson and Calcea Johnson were working on a school-wide math contest that came with a cash prize.

Ne'Kiya Jackson and Calcea Johnson

Ne'Kiya Jackson: I was motivated because there was a monetary incentive.

Calcea Johnson: 'Cause I was like, "$500 is a lot of money. So I-- I would like to at least try."

Both were staring down the thorny bonus question.

Bill Whitaker: So tell me, what was this bonus question?

Calcea Johnson: It was to create a new proof of the Pythagorean Theorem. And it kind of gave you a few guidelines on how would you start a proof.

The seniors were familiar with the Pythagorean Theorem, a fundamental principle of geometry. You may remember it from high school: a² + b² = c². In plain English, when you know the length of two sides of a right triangle, you can figure out the length of the third.

Both had studied geometry and some trigonometry, and both told us math was not easy. What no one told  them  was there had been more than 300 documented proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem using algebra and geometry, but for 2,000 years a proof using trigonometry was thought to be impossible, … and that was the bonus question facing them.

Bill Whitaker: When you looked at the question did you think, "Boy, this is hard"?

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Yeah.

Bill Whitaker: What motivated you to say, "Well, I'm going to try this"?

Calcea Johnson: I think I was like, "I started something. I need to finish it."

Bill Whitaker: So you just kept on going.

Calcea Johnson: Yeah.

For two months that winter, they spent almost all their free time working on the proof.

CeCe Johnson: She was like, "Mom, this is a little bit too much."

CeCe and Cal Johnson are Calcea's parents.

CeCe Johnson:   So then I started looking at what she really was doing. And it was pages and pages and pages of, like, over 20 or 30 pages for this one problem.

Cal Johnson: Yeah, the garbage can was full of papers, which she would, you know, work out the problems and-- if that didn't work she would ball it up, throw it in the trash.

Bill Whitaker: Did you look at the problem?

Neliska Jackson is Ne'Kiya's mother.

Neliska Jackson: Personally I did not. 'Cause most of the time I don't understand what she's doing (laughter).

Michelle Blouin Williams: What if we did this, what if I write this? Does this help? ax² plus ….

Their math teacher, Michelle Blouin Williams, initiated the math contest.

Michelle Blouin Williams

Bill Whitaker: And did you think anyone would solve it?

Michelle Blouin Williams: Well, I wasn't necessarily looking for a solve. So, no, I didn't—

Bill Whitaker: What were you looking for?

Michelle Blouin Williams: I was just looking for some ingenuity, you know—

Calcea and Ne'Kiya delivered on that! They tried to explain their groundbreaking work to 60 Minutes. Calcea's proof is appropriately titled the Waffle Cone.

Calcea Johnson: So to start the proof, we start with just a regular right triangle where the angle in the corner is 90°. And the two angles are alpha and beta.

Bill Whitaker: Uh-huh

Calcea Johnson: So then what we do next is we draw a second congruent, which means they're equal in size. But then we start creating similar but smaller right triangles going in a pattern like this. And then it continues for infinity. And eventually it creates this larger waffle cone shape.

Calcea Johnson: Am I going a little too—

Bill Whitaker: You've been beyond me since the beginning. (laughter)

Bill Whitaker: So how did you figure out the proof?

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Okay. So you have a right triangle, 90° angle, alpha and beta.

Bill Whitaker: Then what did you do?

Bill Whitaker with Calcea Johnson and Ne'Kiya Jackson

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Okay, I have a right triangle inside of the circle. And I have a perpendicular bisector at OP to divide the triangle to make that small right triangle. And that's basically what I used for the proof. That's the proof.

Bill Whitaker: That's what I call amazing.

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Well, thank you.

There had been one other documented proof of the theorem using trigonometry by mathematician Jason Zimba in 2009 – one in 2,000 years. Now it seems Ne'Kiya and Calcea have joined perhaps the most exclusive club in mathematics.

Bill Whitaker: So you both independently came up with proof that only used trigonometry.

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Yes.

Bill Whitaker: So are you math geniuses?

Calcea Johnson: I think that's a stretch.

Bill Whitaker: If not genius, you're really smart at math.

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Not at all. (laugh)

To document Calcea and Ne'Kiya's work, math teachers at St. Mary's submitted their proofs to an American Mathematical Society conference in Atlanta in March 2023.

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Well, our teacher approached us and was like, "Hey, you might be able to actually present this," I was like, "Are you joking?" But she wasn't. So we went. I got up there. We presented and it went well, and it blew up.

Bill Whitaker: It blew up.

Calcea Johnson: Yeah.

Ne'Kiya Jackson: It blew up.

Bill Whitaker: Yeah. What was the blowup like?

Calcea Johnson: Insane, unexpected, crazy, honestly.

It took millenia to prove, but just a minute for word of their accomplishment to go around the world. They got a write-up in South Korea and a shout-out from former first lady Michelle Obama, a commendation from the governor and keys to the city of New Orleans.

Bill Whitaker: Why do you think so many people found what you did to be so impressive?

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Probably because we're African American, one. And we're also women. So I think-- oh, and our age. Of course our ages probably played a big part.

Bill Whitaker: So you think people were surprised that young African American women, could do such a thing?

Calcea Johnson: Yeah, definitely.

Ne'Kiya Jackson: I'd like to actually be celebrated for what it is. Like, it's a great mathematical achievement.

Achievement, that's a word you hear often around St. Mary's academy. Calcea and Ne'Kiya follow a long line of barrier-breaking graduates.

The late queen of Creole cooking, Leah Chase , was an alum. so was the first African-American female New Orleans police chief, Michelle Woodfork …

And judge for the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, Dana Douglas. Math teacher Michelle Blouin Williams told us Calcea and Ne'Kiya are typical St. Mary's students.

Bill Whitaker: They're not unicorns.

Michelle Blouin Williams: Oh, no no. If they are unicorns, then every single lady that has matriculated through this school is a beautiful, Black unicorn.

Pamela Rogers: You're good?

Pamela Rogers, St. Mary's president and interim principal, told us the students hear that message from the moment they walk in the door.

St. Mary's Academy president and interim principal Pamela Rogers

Pamela Rogers: We believe all students can succeed, all students can learn. It does not matter the environment that you live in.

Bill Whitaker: So when word went out that two of your students had solved this almost impossible math problem, were they universally applauded?

Pamela Rogers: In this community, they were greatly applauded. Across the country, there were many naysayers.

Bill Whitaker: What were they saying?

Pamela Rogers: They were saying, "Oh, they could not have done it. African Americans don't have the brains to do it." Of course, we sheltered our girls from that. But we absolutely did not expect it to come in the volume that it came.

Bill Whitaker: And after such a wonderful achievement.

Pamela Rogers: People-- have a vision of who can be successful. And-- to some people, it is not always an African American female. And to us, it's always an African American female.

Gloria Ladson-Billings: What we know is when teachers lay out some expectations that say, "You can do this," kids will work as hard as they can to do it.

Gloria Ladson-Billings, professor emeritus at the University of Wisconsin, has studied how best to teach African American students. She told us an encouraging teacher can change a life.

Bill Whitaker: And what's the difference, say, between having a teacher like that and a whole school dedicated to the excellence of these students?

Gloria Ladson-Billings: So a whole school is almost like being in Heaven.

Bill Whitaker: What do you mean by that?

Bill Whitaker and Gloria Ladson-Billings

Gloria Ladson-Billings: Many of our young people have their ceilings lowered, that somewhere around fourth or fifth grade, their thoughts are, "I'm not going to be anything special." What I think is probably happening at St. Mary's is young women come in as, perhaps, ninth graders and are told, "Here's what we expect to happen. And here's how we're going to help you get there."

At St. Mary's, half the students get scholarships, subsidized by fundraising to defray the $8,000 a year tuition. Here, there's no test to get in, but expectations are high and rules are strict: no cellphones, modest skirts, hair must be its natural color.

Students Rayah Siddiq, Summer Forde, Carissa Washington, Tatum Williams and Christina Blazio told us they appreciate the rules and rigor.

Rayah Siddiq: Especially the standards that they set for us. They're very high. And I don't think that's ever going to change.

Bill Whitaker: So is there a heart, a philosophy, an essence to St. Mary's?

Summer Forde: The sisterhood—

Carissa Washington: Sisterhood.

Tatum Williams: Sisterhood.

Bill Whitaker: The sisterhood?

Voices: Yes.

Bill Whitaker: And you don't mean the nuns. You mean-- (laughter)

Christina Blazio: I mean, yeah. The community—

Bill Whitaker: So when you're here, there's just no question that you're going to go on to college.

Rayah Siddiq: College is all they talk about. (laughter)

Pamela Rogers: … and Arizona State University (Cheering)

Principal Rogers announces to her 615 students the colleges where every senior has been accepted.

Bill Whitaker: So for 17 years, you've had a 100% graduation rate—

Pamela Rogers: Yes.

Bill Whitaker: --and a 100% college acceptance rate?

Pamela Rogers: That's correct.

Last year when Ne'Kiya and Calcea graduated, all their classmates went to college and got scholarships. Ne'Kiya got a full ride to the pharmacy school at Xavier University in New Orleans. Calcea, the class valedictorian, is studying environmental engineering at Louisiana State University.

Bill Whitaker: So wait a minute. Neither one of you is going to pursue a career in math?

Both: No. (laugh)

Calcea Johnson: I may take up a minor in math. But I don't want that to be my job job.

Ne'Kiya Jackson: Yeah. People might expect too much out of me if (laugh) I become a mathematician. (laugh)

But math is not completely in their rear-view mirrors. This spring they submitted their high school proofs for final peer review and publication … and are still working on further proofs of the Pythagorean Theorem. Since their first two …

Calcea Johnson: We found five. And then we found a general format that could potentially produce at least five additional proofs.

Bill Whitaker: And you're not math geniuses?

Bill Whitaker: I'm not buying it. (laughs)

There is a $1 million reward for anyone who solves 1 out of these 7 math problems

Did you know anyone who solves one of these seven math problems gets $1 million?

The Millennium Prize Problems [thoughtsco]

The Millennium Prize Problems are seven unsolved mathematical problems, each carrying a $1 million prize for the right answer.

Recommended articles

The Millennium Prize Problems were created by Landon T. Clay , an American businessman who founded the Clay Mathematics Institute (CMI) in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1998 to promote and share mathematical knowledge. The institute's goal is to give a million-dollar reward to anyone who can solve these math problems.

So what are these complex math problems?

1. The Navier-Stokes Existence and Smoothness Problem:

Scientists use Navier-Stokes equations to make predictions about fluid motions like smoke and water flow. The problem is that mathematicians are curious if these equations always have smooth solutions without sudden jumps or sharp corners.

2. The Hodge Conjecture

It’s all about the hidden connections between shapes and their mathematical descriptions. So, the Hodge Conjecture is almost like studying tangled wires but focusing on how they connect (loops) rather than the exact bends.

3. The Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture

It asks if there's a secret link between how many whole number solutions exist for equations related to the curve (its arithmetic) and the actual shape and folds of the curve itself (its geometry).

4. P vs. NP Problem

This problem is very popular in computer science and mathematics. It asks whether every problem whose solution can be quickly verified by a computer can also be quickly solved by a computer.

5. The Riemann Hypothesis

The Riemann Hypothesis proposes a definite location for most prime numbers through a concept known as "complex analysis" (a type of sophisticated mathematics).

6. Yang-Mills and Mass Gap

This problem concerns quantum mechanics and theoretical physics. It seeks a solution to this query: Is there a gap between the lowest energy level a particle can have and the next level of energy?

7. The Poincaré Conjecture

This problem was solved in 2003 by Grigori Perelman. It was the first of the Millennium Prize problems to be solved. It was about topology, a branch of mathematics that studies the properties of geometric shapes.
