online typing jobs uk

Transcribing is a fantastic way to make a few extra £££s online working from home. There are some basic requirements, but it's a job that you could start doing today in most cases.

home typist jobs uk

There are plenty of ways of making money from home these days but if you’ve never thought of transcribing then you should really put it at the top of your list!  Online transcription jobs have a huge demand and pay very well once you get your proficiency up.

Transcription Jobs UK

Can I make money typing from home?  The short answer is, yes, and here's how...

transcription jobs uk

So let’s break down what you need to start, how to find transcription jobs in the UK, and who are the best companies to work for right now.

What is Transcribing?

First, let’s get to grips with what transcription actually is.  Simply put it is the act of typing out a recorded piece of audio, word for word.  You listen to a piece of audio or watch a video and copy down each word that is said. That’s it.

There are a few different types of transcription, each of which requires a different level of skills and experience and sometimes different equipment (don’t worry we’ll break all of this down for you later).

General Transcription

This is your basic transcription, taking a piece of audio and typing up what is said.  This can cover a wide range of formats; lectures, conference calls, speeches, phone calls, dictation, videos, podcasts.  The list is pretty endless.

They also cover a broad range of topics, from business and marketing to media and academia.

Medical Transcription

This is a specialised practice that requires specific training and qualification.  It involves transcribing doctor's and nurse’s dictations and transcribing them to patients’ records.

Realtime transcription

Working from home you will mostly be working from pre-recorded audio, but there are real-time transcription jobs that require you to transcribe on the fly.  Subtitles for live TV, for example, require live transcriptions as there are no pre-planned scripts or pre-recordings.  These often pay more but require far more experience and typing speed of 200 wpm.

For our purposes here, looking for home typist jobs in the UK, we’ll focus on general transcriptions jobs as these have few to no barriers to entry, and can be done in your own time.

What are the basic skills you need?

There are a few basic skills that you will need to succeed as a transcriber:

Fast and Accurate Typing   - In many instances, agencies offering transcription work are looking for people who can type between 65-80 words per minute  (wpm) and a 98% accuracy.  (for reference real-time transcription you’ll need to be able to type between 180-220 words per minute.)

This might sound like a lot, but you may surprise yourself at how quickly you can type, and if you’re not quite at that speed yet, with a little practice I promise you it’s very achievable.

Good Language Skills  – the audio you get will vary in quality as well as the variety of accents you’re likely to come across.  You’ll need a good grasp of the English language to make sure there’s nothing you misinterpret.

Computer Skills  – You’ll also need a basic understanding of programs like Microsoft Word, and audio playback software like windows media player.

Discretion – There may be times when what you are transcribing is confidential audio.  In these situations, the company is trusting you not to share that information.

What Equipment do you need to start?

In most cases, all you need is a computer and an internet connection to get started working from home.  Headphones are a bonus as they help you focus on just the audio you are transcribing.

Some companies ask you to also have a pedal, which allows you to pause/play the audio using your foot.  This is great for speeding up your work, but not essential.

How Much can you Earn?

This is the big question, and the answer might surprise you.

Transcription work is usually paid per minute.  That’s per minute of audio, not per minute of your time.

On average you can earn between 40p-80p per audio minute.  This means, depending on how quickly you can type, you could earn as much as £16 per hour.

For more difficult jobs the pay can be more, and if you are doing real-time transcription then this could as much as £50 per hour.

Do you need Formal Training?

For general transcription, no, there is no formal training that you need to go through. Practice and self-improvement are always a good idea, though, and the faster you type the more money you can make.

There are ways to test and improve your skills before you even start which will give you the best chance of succeeding.  Here are some links to help you get started:

Practice transcribing from audio  - with different accents and levels of difficulty. You can take a practice transcribing from audio here .

Test your typing speed  – how many words per minute can you reach.  I had a lot of fun trying to beat my top number here .

Practice entrance test   (audio)   – some companies require you to pass a test to join.  There's a sample test transcribing audio for you to practice with here .

Practice entrance test (copy)  – same as above but copying written text rather than audio.  There's a sample test transcribing copy for you to practice with here .

Where and How to Start?

How to find transcription jobs in the UK? Now that you’ve got to grips with what transcribing is, and you’ve had fun practicing your typing skills, let’s get into the nitty-gritty.

Freelance Transcription Services

Joining a transcription agency is not the only way to make money typing from home.  You could also offer up your transcription services on freelancer sites. This way the clients come directly to you, and you could potentially make a little more in the long run by cutting out the middle agency taking its cut.

Note: It will take time to grow a client base and you may very well have to start charging much lower fees.

fiverr

Fiverr is one of the largest freelancer websites online offering everything from copywriting and transcription to animation, editing, and social media management.

It is a fairly simple process joining and setting up a fiverr account, and it’s free to join too, though they do take a 20% cut of every sale you make.

Once you have your profile you then create a ‘gig’, which is basically a service you are offering at a price you set.

Customers searching for transcription work can then see your gig and hire you to do the work.

There are a lot of great articles and youtube videos about the best way to set up a fiverr profile if this is a route that interests you.  Or you could jump on over to skillshare and sign up for a free trial - they have courses on everything on there!

Check out Fiverr

upwork

Upwork is another massive online freelancer site, though it actually works the opposite way to Fiverr.

You set up your profile, but instead of customers finding you, they post their requirements and you bid for the work.

Again there are an awful lot of very good guides on how to make the best of Upwork out there.

What to look for when hiring or applying for an online transcription job uk-based..

Online transcription jobs, UK -based, will ask for typing tests so first and foremost, we would recommend you test both your copy-typing and audio-typing speeds to ensure they really do match any wpm claims you are making on your CV , as you will inevitably be tested an interview stage and it could avoid a red face if your ’95 wpm’ turns out to be closer to 40. If you want an transcriptionist job in the UK, this article should help you.

Try this audio typing test

PLEASE NOTE: October 2023 – we do NOT HAVE ANY VACANCIES I’m afraid for transcription jobs in the UK.

If you are looking for a transcriptionist or proofreader, please call us on 02071170066 as our team can start straight away, but it’s not all about speed to secure an online transcription job .

In fact, accuracy is probably the most crucial factor when applying for online transcription jobs UK-based . We don’t believe one audio transcriptionist can be relied upon to deliver totally accurate transcripts with zero errors (nor have the time to research and check name-spellings, continuity errors by the speaker etc). So for that added ‘polish’ and assurance  of quality, with VoiceNotes’ two-step service, your audio file is first transcribed, then proofread by another UK-based expert in our team. Accurate transcripts are essential in business: the omission of the word ‘no’, homophone confusion of ‘compliment’ with ‘complement’ or mishear of ‘free’ and ‘three’ will change the entire meaning of the sentence and could have unfortunate consequences if not spotted by the recipient.

Try this proofreading test:  https://www.proofreadnow.com/blog/can-you-ace-this-basic-proofreading-quiz

Transcriptionist jobs in the UK – what are the rates per hour?

This can really vary. You must bear in mind the price you are paid per audio minutes isn’t the audio minutes you spend transcribing. A one hour file can take 2-5 times the time to transcribe it – then you have to proofread it so work on 5-6 times.

Some companies pay an annual salary for full or part time work (VoiceNotes Ltd does). Many of the others pay per audio minute. It can vary from 70p upwards depending on accuracy and experience.

Will you specialise in an industry sector?

If you have prior experience of working within, for example, the medical, legal or financial industries, it is true that the recruiter may well assume you already possess a good knowledge of sector-specific terminology, which could increase your ‘brownie points’ above those of other candidates. It would be understandable, then, if you felt it wise or safer to restrict your application campaign to your comfort-zone sector. However, if your skills are strong, no recruiter worth their salt would automatically discount an applicant from a different background if your experience suggests you are adaptable, have initiative and could be easily and effectively trained into a new arena – maybe even bring a refreshing new outlook to the table – and the opportunity of a new chapter could be rewarding and stimulating for you too, so don’t be put off from branching out.

Financial online transcription jobs is our most popular role

Indeed, this has guided our own approach to business and recruitment at VoiceNotes : our origins lie in specialist provision of transcription and proofreading services to the financial sector, but, not only have we worked very successfully with clients from variety of other market categories, we have also not restricted our recruitment to financial transcriptionists and editors – skills and talent come first! When they are present, requisite sector knowledge is easily trainable.

Single voice versus multi-voice transcriptions

Multi-voice transcriptions will always present more of a challenge for the transcriptionist. They take considerably more time. This is due to having to discern one voice from another and recognise who is speaking (while filtering out the inevitable overtalk which makes even hearing WHAT is said, let alone by whom, a tricky exercise) in order to be able to accurately convey each person’s contribution to the dialogue. Online transcription jobs UK-based roles invariably involve multi-voice projects as much, if not more, than simpler, single-voice dictation

How long does it take to transcribe an hour of audio?

In general, it takes about 5-6 times the length of the audio file to transcribe and proofread. At VoiceNotes, we have at least two people working on a voicenote transcription for accuracy. In most companies it’s all up to one person – you – to both transcribe and proofread. Online transcription jobs will not necessarily prove lucrative if you aren’t both fast AND accurate, once you take into consideration how many hours it will take you to transcribe – and proofread – the audio. So you need to be confident of your skills before taking on an audio transcription project.

Will transcription jobs increase due to the increase in Zoom and other online meetings?

This is already proving to be the case. Despite some platforms such as Zoom promoting auto-transcription of meetings, those in business who require accurate, grammatically-correct and professionally-formatted capture of the discussion (and who do not have the time to waste in subsequent painstaking proof-reading, while cross-referencing against the audio, to amend the inevitable errors and ‘digital mishears’), quickly realised that what may have seemed to be the thriftier route inevitably represented a tangibly false economy, and allowing an expert provider to take the strain made both financial sense and ensured a more polished – and, critically, secure – result……. Transcription security  Business meetings and professional recordings often feature highly sensitive content, so ensuring the protection of client data is a crucial factor which should never be taken lightly by any transcription company in its service delivery. Security due diligence should extend from the delivery platform to the individuals in its employment. Similarly, every individual should take personal responsibility towards adherence to security protocols. This is perhaps even more critical in the remote-working universe. VoiceNotes’ delivery platform passes all penetration tests. All employees pass CRB checks, in addition signing confidentiality contracts. We work on securely locked-down and encrypted company equipment. All equipment and processes pass ISO 27001 standards.

Read the job spec for the online transcription jobs carefully

It may seem obvious, but it’s surprising how quickly you can get ahead of the competition when you actually take the time to read what the recruiting company is looking for.

To quote our Director of Operations & Client Services, Marian Shepherd “When I recruit, I always make a point of asking for a covering letter (and add that CVs without covering letters will not be considered). That subsequently helps fine-tune the selection process, as apart from giving me the chance to hear a little of the candidate’s ‘voice’ at an early stage, if a CV then arrives without the letter, you know the sender has either a) deliberately disregarded the request and can’t be bothered to make the effort – NOT our desired recruit, or b) they missed the request for the cover letter entirely – far from ideal when we’re looking for transcriptionists – and especially proofreaders – whose close attention to detail is crucial to the role!”

Our job specs for online transcription jobs UK-based We always provide specific detail of the roles for which we are recruiting in our job board advertisements. We feel it’s important (and fair!) for candidates to have a clearer idea of expectations and how they will be spending their day, rather than a vague ‘audio typist/proofreader required’. This helps potential candidates to make a more informed decision over whether the role will be right for them. In turn, this helps increase the chance of our receiving candidates who will be a good match for us. As an example, below is our current job spec for an audio typist’s role, included in our posted recruitment ads:

The role includes:

  • Fast and accurate audio transcription of voicenotes and other transcriptions received, both via the VoiceNotes administration system and other audio file formats, with a diligent focus on correct spelling and punctuation.
  • Developing, as an ongoing requirement, a broad knowledge of industry-appropriate terminology, names of key individuals and companies etc., to further increase accuracy of transcriptions.
  • Becoming fully conversant with the use of relevant internet sites and ‘tools’ (such as the FSA register) to increase sector knowledge as appropriate.
  • The senior transcriptionist is responsible for overseeing and training of new transcriptionists who may join the Company, ensuring they are fully aware of Company expectations of their performance in the transcription role.
  • Ensuring appropriate prioritising of notes for typing. For instance, that same day turnaround clients, or 24 hours clients nearing deadline, are a priority versus less urgent notes.
  • And wherever else you see a need and want to take the role…..!

While the job spec for audio proofreaders is as follows:

This role focusses on highly skilled proofreading. However, it also does also require typing support for transcriptionists when necessary. So the spec includes:

  • Audio proofreading of incoming ‘voicenotes’ and transcriptions called in and dictated by clients. You need to ensure the highest standards of accuracy (a keen ear for regional and international accents is a prerequisite in achieving this).
  • Demonstration of tenacity in making every effort to ensure there are no gaps in the text. For example, to check name spellings of companies and individuals mentioned.
  • Demonstration of excellent grammar and punctuation skills (there will be a test at interview stage).
  • Fast, accurate typing to support full-time transcriptionists when required.
  • An aptitude for quickly assimilating skills in new IT systems.
  • A willingness to expand your role and take on more responsibilities over time.

The ads for both roles always conclude with that all-important aforementioned request….! We would love to hear from you if we have an opportunity (see below). If so, please forward your CV, with a covering letter. The covering letter conveying why the position appeals to you and what you feel you would bring to the role. (Please note, the covering letter is essential for your application)

Are there any opportunities with VoiceNotes now for UK-based online transcription jobs?

I’m afraid not at the moment.

A professional team, ready to work on multi-voice transcriptions is key

The VoiceNotes team is comprised of a full-time, permanent group of employees.  We don’t have a long list of freelancers. This is quite un usual for a transcription and proofreading agency. However, we believe it’s the only way to ensure delivery of a consistent, high-quality service to our clients. Additionally it enables thorough employee security vetting. Training and ongoing performance development is easier with permanent employees. Plus, enables us to quickly become familiar with our clients, their specific requirements and business terminology. In effect, VoiceNotes becomes your ‘remote, in-house team’!

Feel free to talk to us about our recruiting. We are very open and honest in all aspects of the company. VoiceNotes tries to cultivate a culture of honestly and are very approachable.

Just wanted to say that the service has been spot on. Quick turn around, accurate transcriptions and a reasonable price. Thank you very much to you and the team.

Typeout are very efficient, always accurate, deliver when they say they will and are great people to work with. We only use Typeout these days.

I could not have been happier with the transcription service I received from TypeOut. The turnaround was quick and of good quality (despite the sector specific language and acronyms used in the audio files). Would use TypeOut again to help with the burden of transcribing long qualitative interviews! Researcher, North East

Thank you for the accurate and timely transcription of interview tapes and CD’s over the past few years. Benefit fraud team

Thank you very much for everything, it has been a very quick and efficient service. Research Department

Very happy with the work. I shall definitely be back and recommend your services to my colleagues

Accuro  is the leading transcription company in the UK and is always looking for talented and experienced transcribers, home editors and proofreaders to join their panel of professionals. Click the boxes below for more information.

Accuro provide medical transcription services to all medical disciplines and are always looking for new transcribers to work alongside us.

If you have at least 3 years’ medical typing experience in any speciality, then please read the below information to find out more and apply.

Our recruitment team will allocate you to either a transcription role, or a home editor/proofreader role (where you will edit speech recognition files) – once you’re registered with Accuro, you can request to be moved to either/both transcription or home editor/proofreader.

Please note: You will need to be based in the UK, as we are unable to send our clients’ data offshore.

Accuro work with a number of industries providing the following services:

  • Legal transcription
  • Academia/research transcription
  • Human resources transcription
  • Data inputting services
  • Translation services
  • General multi-voice transcription
  • Proofreading/editing services
  • Property transcription services
  • Captioning/subtitling services

If you have any typing experience whatsoever, please do not hesitate to read the information below and apply.

Our software has been built to stringent NHS standards, and requires the following equipment:

  • Windows 10 or newer machine with over 4gb RAM and a dual core processor. Apple Macintosh machines are not supported.
  • Microsoft 365 – latest version of Office. Older versions of Microsoft Office will not work .
  • Transcription foot pedal (or know how to use hotkeys).
  • Broadband/fibre internet.
  • A good quality set of headphones.

We also recommend a transcription foot pedal.

We recommend Olympus foot pedals or Infinity foot pedals ; however, other foot pedals may work (we cannot guarantee that other generic foot pedals will work).

When you start with Accuro, you will be at a set rate. Once you have completed a substantial amount of work and built up a client base, you can request to change your rate and Accuro’s team will advise what is best to maximise the work you will receive.

Each month Accuro create an invoice for you which is paid by Bacs directly into your bank account. You will be self-employed and will need to register as such with HMRC.

You will be contracted on a freelance basis and as such you determine how often and when you want to work. Once you’re set up, you will have a “timesheet” for the next seven days where you can request the minutes of dictation you want to complete on any given day.

Your commitment to us is that when you request work, it is completed by the pre-agreed time, usually by 9am the following working day.

Yes! A lot of our transcribers work for Accuro in the evenings/early mornings before their full or part-time employment. A number of our transcribers move away from the ‘9 to 5’ and work with Accuro on a more regular basis.

You will be contracted on a freelance basis and as such you determine how often and when you want to work.

For more information on being a freelancer, please visit the Gov.uk website here .

Flexibility

You choose how much dictation you want to type, when you want to type it and how often you want to work for us. Many transcribers love this about Accuro as you don’t have to put in the dreaded holiday request and wait nervously for its approval. If you are a parent, then childcare during school holidays is no longer a problem.

Tailored customer base

No matter where your experience lies, we have a customer base for you. Our recruitment team and work-allocation team will go through your CV and assign customers that best reflect your skillset, whether that be nine years in a GP surgery, four years in family law or 12 years as a neurosurgeon’s personal secretary. After all, typing what you know and enjoy makes it both fun and financially viable.

Who needs one client when you could have 30? As a national outsourcing company our customer base is much larger than if you were to set up your own personal service, meaning you will receive a variety of different customers to type for. You will build up a regular customer base whose work you will receive consistently, but you can also try different accounts as they come on board too. The more customers you type for the more work you receive and the more money you earn.

We have a dedicated transcriber management team whose goal is the improvement and wellbeing of all the transcribers on our panel. Whether you have a question about how to request work, how to lay out a certain document or just generally want to have a chat about working with us, somebody will be available to help!

As you begin typing, you will also receive regular feedback from our in-house editing team which will help you understand what a customer wants, and to answer any queries you have regarding terminology and our transcribers often end up learning something that helps them going forwards.

Our IT support team are also on hand to help you as much as possible with any software or computer problems you may encounter – after all, if your PC isn’t working, then how are you supposed to work with us?
