Veteran Housing

Veterans Resource Center: a stable transitional living environment with individual case management and programs that are designed to help move veterans into employment and independent housing.

At Volunteers of America Ohio & Indiana, we work with local communities and national service organizations to provide comprehensive assistance for veterans in our communities. One area of assistance we proudly provide is veteran housing. Learn how the Veterans Resource Center can help you or a loved one, and find out how you can donate today to help end veteran homelessness in your area.

Our support for veterans comes in a variety of ways. First, we offer comprehensive veteran services throughout both Ohio and Indiana to assist veterans with a range of housing, mental health, and employment services. There are housing units available throughout these two states with availability for formerly homeless veterans to receive the assistance they need.

Each veteran has a unique housing situation, so our services need to reflect the diverse needs in our area. Here are just a few ways our Ohio and Indiana veteran services help match homeless veterans with housing solutions:

  • Rapid rehousing
  • Homeless prevention services
  • Permanent supportive housing
  • Emergency housing
  • Information and assistance about house loans for veterans

Each service was designed with local veteran needs in mind. If individuals are experiencing mental health issues that may have caused them to become homeless, we match those individuals with trained and experienced mental health professionals who are experienced with veteran needs.

Housing assistance comes in many forms, depending on individual needs. Some veterans can purchase or improve their home with a generous VA housing loan. Others require emergency housing and a supportive housing team.

Donation Options

Volunteers of America Ohio & Indiana offer a range of donation options to help support your local community. Whether you wish to donate to support the entire organization or to make a specific donation to the veteran housing program, here are some easy ways you can donate today:

  • Thrift store donations
  • One-time online gifts
  • Monthly auto donations
  • Car donation or auto auction

Whether you make a single donation or become a lifelong partner with us, any assistance is greatly appreciated. Your time and/or donations allow us to continue to provide comprehensive housing services to veterans throughout Ohio and Indiana.

Join Us Today

Whether you wish to donate, volunteer, or you need to access our housing services for yourself or a loved one, contact us today. Our veteran housing services offer hope and safe housing throughout your local community, and your generous assistance can help us reach our goal of ending homelessness among our veterans.

Our veteran housing programs offer a path for veterans to end homelessness using cutting-edge techniques for this unique population such as intensive case management, clinical treatment, and peer support.

'Felt like a fish out of water': Organization works to help veterans transition from service to civilian life

veterans resume help columbus ohio

CINCINNATI — On this Memorial Day weekend, one veteran organization says it's honoring and remembering the fallen while making sure those who make it back aren't forgotten either.

"Sept. 11, 2001, happened my senior year of high school, so that was kind of my call to action," Chris Newsome said. "There's a lot of growing to do, and the Army really forces you down a pipeline of growth and leadership and maturity."

Chris Newsome serving in the U.S. Army

Newsome enlisted in the U.S. Army after graduating from Anderson High School. He completed his basic training at Fort Moore (formerly Fort Benning). Then, he completed advanced individual training and airborne school, where he would become a member of the Army's 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg).

Chris Newsome serving in the U.S. Army

He served in Afghanistan in 2003 and in Iraq twice in 2004 and 2005-2006, where he served in combat operations as an infantry paratrooper. Once his military service was over, Newsome admits it was a struggle transitioning from military to civilian life.

"I was grateful for the work I could find, but it definitely wasn't a career launch pad," Newsome said.

Chris Newsome serving in the U.S. Army

For him, it was not only a struggle translating his skills from what he learned in the military to civilian life, but it was a struggle fitting into a new world.

"I felt like a fish out of water to an extent," Newsome said. "When you take off the uniform for the last time these are the realities."

He worked some odd jobs, but Newsome felt like he lost his purpose.

"Handful of months prior to that, I was leading patrols in Iraq and to go from that to what I considered, at the time, to be kind of a professional step backwards, that's when I realized I need to advocate for myself, I need to make myself marketable as humanly possible, and more importantly than anything, I needed to find a role, a company that spoke to me kind of culturally," said Newsome.

Then he would find RecruitMilitary, a recruiting firm that helps veterans find careers after life in the military. The staff helps veterans not only find work that's best for them, but helps them with buliding their resumes and interviewing for jobs.

"Our community is very proud they're not always going to lead by saying I need help)," said Newsome.

He also told us some veterans have a difficult time articulating their military skills into everyday lingo on a resume. For example, Newsome was part of 11 Bravo, but if you were to write that on a resume, it translates to infantry soldier. It's those minor changes he feels can make all the difference for a veteran landing an interview.

Veterans Chris Newsome and Aubrey McDade

"We have all of these great skill sets these great attributes, but it is on us to be able to vocalize those and articulate that to the recruiter at the other end of that conversation to make them understand why we are the right fit," Newsome said.

His new mission is helping veterans realize they've had it in them all along.

Chris Newsome gives a presentation for RecruitMilitary

"Part of what we have to do as veterans as a community to honor the fallen is to live our best lives," Newsome said. "Part of living our best lives is making sure that we're caring for our families, starting them, nurturing them, being productive members of our community, having a professional career, living the best version of our lives that we can to honor those who no longer can."

Newsome's final piece of advice to veterans is to never sell themselves short.

"Don't go out there and just get some random job, get a career, be the most awesome version of yourself that you can possibly be," said Newsome.

Memorial Day ceremony honors fallen heroes at National Veterans Memorial and Museum

by Stacia Naquin

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) — Memorial Day gathered veterans, service members, families, dignitaries, and community members for a Remembrance Ceremony at the National Veterans Memorial and Museum in an effort to honor all those who gave their last measure of devotion in service to our country.

“We are here to say their names and celebrate their lives,” said Bill Butler, U.S. Army, retired Colonel and Acting President of the National Veterans Memorial and Museum.

Monday’s ceremony included a flyover of two F16s from the 180th Fighter Wing with the Ohio Air National Guard, as well as an honorary volley fire from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Honor Guard, with the 122nd Army Band Brass Quintet playing an Armed Forces Medley, among other patriotic songs.

The keynote speaker secretary, Patrick J. Murphy, America’s first war veteran elected to the U.S. Congress and the 32nd under Secretary of the US Army, shared a message of hope and the importance of paying tribute to our fallen soldiers and their families.

“It means the world to their families,” said Murphy in his address. “It means the world to those angels, those warriors up in heaven.”

Murphy, along with Tara Harris, Gold Star Child and keynote speaker at Sunday’s candlelight vigil, took part in the ceremonial wreath laying. Harris’s father, 1st Sergeant Glenn Harris of B Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, was killed in a training accident barely 1 year after returning home from the battle of Mogadishu, Somalia, in October 1993.

Her father’s name was one of many spoken out loud during the ceremony, in the tradition of honoring those lost, as the attendees are encouraged to recognize those on Memorial Day who we will not forget.

“In saying their names, let us all pass along the true meaning of Memorial Day to the next generations so their names continue to be spoken with love, with honor, and with a debt of gratitude,” said Butler.

Gerrymandering a threat to Ohio veterans, Gold Star families. "We know the price of freedom.

Columbus real estate developer Scott W. Patton is a member of a Gold Star family and combat veteran that served in the 101st Airborne Division, 82nd Airborne Division, 5th Special Forces Group and 19th Special Forces Group.

As we celebrate Memorial Day Monday and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, it's imperative to reflect on the importance of fair representation and the integrity of our electoral system.

The recent gerrymandering in Ohio, one of the most manipulated states in the nation, has undermined the democratic process and the will of the people. It's time for a change, and the Citizens Not Politicians Amendment offers a promising solution.

This is a time when we honor and remember those who died while serving in the country’s armed forces. For most citizens, it marks the start of summer, celebrated with backyard cookouts and evening fireworks across the nation.

Michael F. Curtin: It's bad no matter which party does it. Democrats rigged Ohio before GOP came on scene.

It’s a long weekend for gathering with friends and family in the warmth of late spring. Some will attend their community's parades to honor our military and its ranks that have fallen in service to the country. Most have not served nor felt the grief that the ultimate sacrifice brings to the families of lost service members: mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters dead and lost to this life. My family is such a family.

We know the price of freedom.

We understand personal loss.

For the last fifteen years, we have observed Memorial Day at Arlington National Cemetery.

I will be there Monday, remembering the life of my brother and the lives of my brothers-in-arms buried near him. The sacrifice of their lives while preserving our freedoms—the right to vote, equality of opportunity for all citizens, and the rule of law—demands that citizens, not legislators, determine the future direction of our state and country.

According to The USC Schwarzenegger Institute for State and Global Policy, Ohio is one of the most gerrymandered states in the nation.

Between January and May 2022, the Ohio Supreme Court struck down five separate iterations of the legislative maps, each time ruling that the maps were unconstitutional partisan gerrymanders.

Despite the state Supreme Court siding with the pro-voting groups on five separate occasions and requiring redraws of the maps, the Ohio Redistricting Commission failed to submit constitutionally compliant maps to the court. As a result, Ohioans voted under unconstitutional legislative maps during the 2022 midterm elections.

Politicians and back-room insiders disregarded the court and the will of the people by repeatedly submitting maps that were rejected as unconstitutional. Then, in 2023, politicians from both parties met behind closed doors and struck a deal to impose new gerrymandered maps.

Sad, sober reality: Allison Russo on why Democrats had no option but to support bogus maps

Establishment politicians have proven that they cannot be trusted to draw fair legislative districts using an open and transparent process. A broad nonpartisan coalition of Ohio citizens has come together to end gerrymandering by proposing the Citizens Not Politicians Amendment to our state constitution.

The proposed legislation would replace the current politician-dominated commission with a 15-member Ohio Citizens Redistricting Commission that would include Republican, Independent, and Democratic voters. It bans current and recent political officeholders, those with strong political ties, and lobbyists from drawing maps and makes it unconstitutional to draw maps that favor one party.

Petitioners must collect 413,487 valid voter signatures by July 3, 2024, to place it on the 2024 general election ballot. Signing those petitions would be a patriotic and honorable way to remember the sacrifice of those who have fought to protect our representative form of government.

I am a combat veteran who fought for my country on foreign lands, believing that I was sacrificing for the greater cause of preserving freedoms given and maintained by constitutional rule of law. The effects of gerrymandering impact how my vote is counted and have enhanced divisions where compromise is seen as weakness, creating a political environment reminiscent of the Cold War acronym MAD (mutual assured destruction).

The eyes of the fallen, who perished preserving the right to vote, are watching.

Politicians can’t look beyond their personal or their party’s interests. I support the amendment because I believe citizens, not politicians, should draw district maps to safeguard our right to fair elections and representative government on this Memorial Day and beyond.

Columbus real estate developer  Scott W. Patton is a member of a Gold Star family and combat veteran that served in the 101st Airborne Division, 82nd Airborne Division, 5th Special Forces Group and 19th Special Forces Group.
