My Presentations:

Building Your Story’s Stage: How to Strengthen Your Setting

Can you change your story's setting without affecting your plot or character development? Then you aren't using your setting effectively.

Setting is a vital part of your story. Without it, readers can’t imagine where your characters are or how they are affected by their environment. Some readers return to a book series specifically for the setting. Think of Hogwarts and Harry Potter fans.

In this workshop, we'll cover the three main components of setting, how to use setting as an obstacle or character, and how to weave setting into a story.

Who’s Telling Your Story: Point of View and Perspective

Have you ever read a story where the characters seemed to be speaking directly to you or you felt intimately connected to the plot? That author took the time to find the right point of view and perspective for that story.

The choice between first person and third isn’t simply a matter of pronouns. The point of view you choose will determine who tells your story, who the main characters are, how close to the characters and plot your readers feel, and more.

This workshop will not only cover the pros and cons of different points of view, but also how to decide which point of view and perspective is right for your piece.

The library’s Creative Writing Group was the creation of Jennifer Bradley, Adult Programming and Collections librarian.

“I’ve always been a fan of creative writing and I did study it before I decided to pursue my MLIS in library science,” Bradley said. “It was just something on my mind that I’ve been wanting to do for a while.”

There are some creative writing groups in Fort Collins and Denver, but nothing in the Greeley area, she said.

Coincidently, local author Kendra Griffin was also searching for a local creative writing group and reached out to Bradley for some information on current groups or possibly starting a group.

“It was literally synchronicity,” Bradley said, laughing.

Griffin, who teaches creative writing, literature and composition at Aims Community College as well as advises the college’s writing club, partnered with Bradley to create the group, which began in September 2019.

“I love it; they keep me energized,” Griffin said about the group.

The group meets from 6 to 7:45 p.m. every second and fourth Thursday of the month. While they typically meet in-person, the club has adopted a virtual platform since COVID-19 began in March.

“I was afraid going to an online program would be the death of the group,” Bradley said. “But it actually turned out that people are still signing up and we have a regular crew of attendees and some new people that drop in every now and then.”

Meetings consist of writing prompts focused on different topics such as how to write a good party scene or how to create good dialogue with your characters.

“Meeting usually start by doing some social catching up, talking about what’s been going on with our writing and lives in general,” Bradley said. “Then we go into the writing prompts and take about 20 to 30 minutes to do so practice writing.”

The group also is a platform for members to share their work and get feedback and suggestions.

“The group benefits members and the community in several ways,” Bradley said. “It’s a way to socialize and build a writers’ community in the local area. Writing can be a solitary experience so it’s great to meet other writers and share your experiences with what you are working on and get great feedback.”

The club is free to attend and is open to adults age 18 years and older. Writers of all skill levels and genres are welcome to attend.

Former longtime Donald Trump adviser Hope Hicks testified about how his 2016 presidential campaign became embroiled in a political firestorm over a tape in which he boasted about grabbing women sexually without their permission. The infamous “Access Hollywood” tape is central to the case. Prosecutors say it hastened his then-lawyer Michael Cohen’s hush money deal with porn actor Stormy Daniels to keep her quiet about claims she had a sexual encounter with Trump years earlier. Hicks testified Friday that after learning of the tape's existence, she knew it was a “damaging development.”

Mindful therapy group expands to colorado, with offices in denver & fort collins opening later in 2024.

Currently Seeing Telehealth Clients & Onboarding New Clinicians

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE, Wash. , May 8, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Mindful Therapy Group (Mindful), a collaborative network of associates and fully licensed, independent mental health clinicians that partners with the majority of regional and national insurers, today announced its expansion of services into Colorado . Telehealth is available now and true to Mindful's roots, the company will open two physical locations in Denver in early June and Fort Collins in September. As a result of enthusiastic engagement from providers in Colorado , most of those seeking mental health can be scheduled within just 48 hours.

"In 2023, it was reported that nearly one million Coloradans couldn't get the mental health care they needed," said Derek Crain , LICSW, co-founder and CEO of Mindful Therapy Group. "Unfortunately, this lack of access is not unique. At Mindful, our mission is to provide accessible therapy and medication management to those who need it. We don't want you to struggle to get an appointment; we can match you with a provider today."

Mindful's clinicians provide medication management and therapy for individuals, couples, families, and children across a wide range of specialties, including anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, behavioral disorders and more. Most local and national insurance providers are accepted.

"We have been blown away by the positive response from local providers. Our model truly supports the well-being of therapists as they pour so much into their clients and what it takes to run a business. We hope to support as many local providers in their independent practices as we can to increase access," said Crain.

By empowering independent therapists with the necessary tools and support, Mindful believes more people can access therapy. Through its model, Mindful helps mental health clinicians build independent practices by providing all-encompassing business support through webinars, community building and professional guidance.

Individuals seeking therapy can learn more and schedule an appointment now for telehealth by visiting mindfultherapygroup.com.  Clinicians interested in joining Mindful's network can visit mindfulsupportservices.com/Provider-opportunities.
