GoodBooks were an English indie rock band from Sevenoaks in Kent. They first received media attention upon releasing their self-published EP Valves and Robots in June 2005. The band signed to Transgressive Records in late 2005 for one single (bassist Christopher Porter has the date the band signed their record deal tattooed on his left wrist) and released "Walk With Me" in April, before being signed by Columbia Records shortly after. GoodBooks disbanded after their last gig on 28 June 2009. The name GoodBooks was suggested to Max Cooke at a gig by the children's TV presenter Holly Willoughby. more »

Goodbooks Leni

First spotted on the awesome Transgressive label last year, Goodbooks have already been hailed by the NME as one of THE new bands to watch out for. Their geeky take on quirky pop has already seen them grace stages with the likes of the Magic Numbers and Art Brut, and has seen a rabid fanbase devouring their early EP releases, bringing them to the attention of Columbia records.

‘Leni’, their debut single for the label, sees the band almost perfecting their polished pop hooks and finds them throwing squelchy bass and twinkly xylophones in the mix to create an addictively fun release steeped in the tradition laid down by Jarvis Cocker and Stuart Murdoch, whilst pointing the way for every fey indie guy to follow. Add a suitably cryptic lyrical narrative to boot and all told you have an intriguing three minutes that offer up a late shout for single of the year.

The debut album proper should be one of the great records of next year and will – if there’s any justice at all – further enhance Goodbooks reputation as something of a national treasure.

Glastonbury 2024 day 2 highlights from expensive eats to Sir Michael Eavis singing

Glastonbury festival day two has come to a close – and what an incredible time at Worthy Farm it has been!

The day kicked off with rain, travel disruption on the trains, and a tractor fire causing road closures.

Festivalgoers were then shocked by the price of the breakfast menu items which were on par with London prices and included a £15 sandwich.

Despite the rocky start, things got better as people travelled from across the country to the festival and made it in time to see new father Joe Wicks  lead thousands in a morning workout.

The sun was shining as more rumours began to swirl about surprise acts and the possibility of an intimate Coldplay gig for local fans.

The founder of the festival, Sir Michael Eavis, delighted audiences with a few songs at The Park Stage and one couple got married, and another took part in a handfasting ceremony at the festival.

The sun set as fans settled into some of the acts of the evening, and prepared for the larger stages to open up on Friday.

Dua Lipa’s headline act will have ‘incredible surprises’

Dua Lipa is set to headline the festival on Friday night – and it’s set to be a good one!

In an interview with Variety , Warner Music’s Max Lousada teased that the Houdini singer has some tricks up her sleeve.

‘This show is going to have some incredible surprises and some unexpected moments – she’s just going to bring the party to Friday night.’

He didn’t elaborate on what surprises fans might anticipate but did he say that this festival is a huge step in the Don’t Star Now singer’s career.

‘The great thing about festivals is, you’re playing to audiences you haven’t necessarily played to before. For Dua, this is going to be a step change and a key moment in her career,’ he said.

Max then revealed that performing at this festival has always been a dream for Dua.

‘This was always one of her big aspirations. From the moment we signed her, she was like, “I want to headline Glastonbury”, so I’m thrilled for that dream to come true.’

Huge Hollywood stars expected at ‘secret’ new venue

Glasto celebrity hotspot The Rabbit Hole may have closed its door – but there’s a new kid in town.

According to The Sun , Soho House has launched a swanky new pop-up at Worthy Farm called Hideout.

The venue, which boasts a separate and super-exclusive VIP area, serves delectable cocktails for those sick of pints and dirty burgers.

It is even adorned with Soho House’s scented candles to make you forget your miles away from decent plumbing and a proper bed.

The publication claims Hollywood stars including Florence Pugh, Russell Crowe, and James Corden will pay Hideout a visit.

Paloma Faith reveals she’s ‘hassled’ by ‘entitled’ people in VIP

Paloma Faith has slammed the VIP tents at festivals and revealed that she’s far more comfortable in the ‘normal’ sections.

The star who is set to light up the the Pyramid Stage on Sunday night told The Sun : ‘It is weird – when I am in the VIP area I get hassled left right and centre.

‘Everyone in there feels entitled but in the normal bit everyone leaves me alone and they just want to talk to me like a normal person.

‘In the VIP area they are like, “We deserve this”, but they are not giving me the money that they spent on the ticket.’

The star added that despite not having the best time in VIP, she was ‘so excited’ to be back at the festival.

‘I’ve not done Glastonbury in eight years and I feel so excited.

‘I am almost going to combust.

‘It is one of the absolute best memories of my career, playing at Glastonbury.’

The Only Love Can Hurt Like This singer will be taking to the main stage from 13:45 – 14:45 on Sunday, June 30.

Festivalgoers tie the knot

Two festivalgoers, Aaron and Awel Fox tied the knot at Glastonbury today after dating for seven years.

‘It’s the best place in the world,’ said Aaron when asked why the couple chose the festival as their venue.

‘We came to see a handfasting five years ago and we said we’d like to do it,’ Awel added.

‘It’s always something that I’ve wanted to do,’ her new husband chimed in.

‘And we love it here so it’s special to us,’ the bride concluded.

The pair aren’t the only ones to have this idea as there have been other reports of proposals, handfasting ceremonies, and more weddings set to take place this weekend as couples celebrate the festival in romantic ways.

Emily Eavis praises 88-year-old father as ‘better than ever’

Sir Michael Eavis may be in his ninth decade of life, but he wowed fans earlier today with a stunning vocal performance at the Park Stage.

The founder of Glastonbury’s daughter praised her father and told PA News Agency: ‘It’s the best start for me to see him on the stage and his voice sounded better than ever.’

She revealed that his age was not a concern when it came to his performance: ‘No, he was raring to go.

‘He’s had a few rehearsals and he was really up for it.

‘It’s just so good to see him out there and receive all that love.

Emily concluded that the whole experience was ‘wonderful’ as her father was celebrated by the huge audience that gathered to hear him sing.

Coldplay secret show rumoured at an intimate venue

Coldplay is one of the major headliners of the festival, set to take to the pyramid stage for the fifth time on Saturday night.

While fans can’t wait for this exciting moment, it has been rumoured that they might be taking to the stage ahead of this major gig.

A local venue called Cheese and Grain in Frome is currently hosting huge crowds and queues as fans believe that the band will be performing there ahead of the festival.

Trucks and vans with the band’s gear were spotted at the venue with a sign around the car park saying that a private event was taking place today per NME .

Of course, this may just be a rumour or perhaps the band are just rehearsing there, but this venue has been used by Paul McCartney in 2022 and the Foo Fighters in 2017 for surprise gigs ahead of Glastonbury in the past.

Sir Michael Eavis delighted festivalgoers by taking to the stage on Thursday afternoon with his band.

The founder was cheered on by the audience as he arrived and giggled to himself saying ‘God damn,’ according to our reporter in the audience.

In a moving moment, he gave a rendition of Frank Sinatra’s My Way, and was joined by the crowd who sand along with him.

Much to the delight of the crowd he also crooned Suspicious Minds by Elvis Presley. Both performances earned a thundering round of applause for the creator of the festival.

Couple ties the knot in handtying ceremony after getting engaged at Glastonbury last year.

Sian Barklem, 25 and Johnjo Smith, 24, took part in a handytying ceremony in the Healing Fields at Glastonbury today.

The Liverpudlian couple told PA News Agency that the festival is their ‘favourite place on earth’ and the same location where they got engaged last year during Sir Elton John’s headline act.

The couple were officially married just months after their engagement but wanted a ceremony at Glastonbury to share with their friends.

‘We got married in September but we had decided that we wanted to do this in Glastonbury this year, to celebrate with our friends and a year from our engagement as well.

‘Glastonbury is a very special place because it’s our favourite place on Earth, so it’s very special that we can celebrate our marriage and our relationship on these special grounds and with all our friends, who we always come with,’ said Sian.

Following the ceremony, she revealed that they kept holding hands for hours afterwards.

‘We’ve kept our hands tied together for a couple of hours but it’s not very practical being at a festival and having our hands tied so we’ve just taken it off now,’ she said.

What channel is Glastonbury on?

For those who are sitting at home and wanting to know how to tune into all of the best that Glastonbury 2024 has to offer – you’re in luck!

The BBC has gone all out this year and created a mammoth amount of coverage with a dedicated Glastonbury channel on BBC iPlayer, which will stream performances as they happen.

The Glastonbury Channel II has also been launched which will collate highlights from across the weekend.

The main acts won’t perform until Friday, June 28 which is when the TV coverage will begin.

BBC’s The One Show will help kick off the coverage on Friday at 7pm, with a celebration of Glastonbury through the years, then linking to the live 2024 event.

But the Glastonbury channel is currently live on iPlayer, playing highlights of events in years gone by.

Sir Michael Eavis thought he would turn down knighthood

Glastonbury Festival founder Sir Michael Eavis has said he thought he would turn down his knighthood.

Speaking to the Glastonbury Free Press as this year’s music event gets underway, he revealed: ‘I actually always thought I’d turn it down if I was offered it, because I already liked being me.’

Sir Michael, 88, who was knighted in April, added: ‘It’s (the festival) all going from strength to strength.

‘It’s so important that this festival stands for something.

‘That’s the guts of the event, really. It’s why we’ve backed the CND (Campaign For Nuclear Disarmament) since 1981.’

Among the new venues this year at Glastonbury is Terminal 1, described as a ‘re-purposed airport celebrating migration’.

Sir Michael said it is ‘dealing with the issue of immigration’.

‘They’re taking the approach that we can solve it,’ he added.

‘We can be friendly to these unfortunate people in the boats.

‘It’s demonstrating, the whole festival is, really, that you can get on with your neighbour. And they’re putting all of that into a show. Isn’t that amazing?’

Sir Michael is expected to give his traditional musical performance today, covering a series of classics with his band.

Last year hundreds of fans chanted ‘Michael!’ as the veteran organiser was wheeled on to The Park Stage in an office chair, as he recovered from an operation on his leg.

Glastonbury merchandise includes £75 hoodie

Business is already booming at the Glastonbury merchandise stall – despite prices as steep as £75 for a hoodie and £55 for a sweater.

There were small queues dotted about snapping up merch yesterday, but as more festivalgoers arrive fans’ keenness increases to make sure they bag the souvenir from the event that they want.

The line of festival merch booths, which are signposted by the banner ‘official festival t-shirts’ with hands pointing downwards, also sell swag on behalf of the Worthy Farm headliners, which include Dua Lipa , Coldplay and  SZA .

And it’s Dance the Night singer Dua, 28, who may raise eyebrows with the merch on offer from her team, for it all appears to be regular merch for her latest album, Radical Optimism, and its current accompanying European tour, rather than anything Glasto-specific.

T-shirts, selling for £35, have Dua on the front and the name of the tour on the back, and are available in black or white, while a £55 black sweater has a picture on the front and tour dates on the back.

However, the most expensive item – on sale for £75 – is a grey-brown hoodie with a small pink and green written logo on the front, which appears to be the name of her song Illusion, and no other discernable design feature.

Winding queues continue on platform at Paddington

Photos from London’s Paddington station this afternoon show that the travel build-ups continue after train delays this morning.

Revellers starting their journeys from the capital down to Somerset for Glastonbury have been pictured standing in a line that snakes back and forth along the platform at Paddington.

Temporary barriers have been put in place to squeeze the maximum number of people into the space, reminiscent of airport queues for security.

There are also staff in hi-vis jackets on platform eight to help assist travellers, with one already dressed for the occasion in a pink cowboy hat.

Reports of a tractor on fire causing road closures

X account Travel Somerset issued an update on road closures around Worthy Farm, after a vehicle fire.

It was then claimed the vehicle was actually a tractor, leaving one person branding it ‘Peak Glastonbury’.

‘Peak Glastonbury: our shuttle bus is stuck down a country lane because a tractor is on fire. Or as the driver put it: “For those of you from London, they’re the things that transport the flour to make the bread for your smashed avocado on toast”,’ Nick wrote.

Joe Lycett’s producer Chris Sawyer was also caught up in the chaos, sharing video clips that showed the ‘problem’ escalating as a fire engine arrived to help douse out the flames, joining two police vehicles and an ambulance already on the scene.

‘This is insane!’ one passenger was heard gasping as the vehicle, which looked to be a small lorry and was already engulfed in flames and smoke, then had its fire spread to the tree above it.

‘The fuel is on fire and pouring down the hill but that’s probably fine I’d say,’ joked Chris in the caption of one of his clips, as the firefighters started hosing down the vehicle’s fire.

Luckily, they were on the way to Glastonbury again before too long, with the busload of would-be festivalgoers cheering as Chris confirmed: ‘We move!’

Who is rumoured to play ‘secret sets’ at Glastonbury?

As well as the earlier mentioned reports that Kasabian are set to surprise fans with a shock performance, a whole host of acts are rumoured to be taking to the stage.

We know for sure that fans will be treated to headline sets from the likes of  Dua Lipa ,  Coldplay , and  SZA , with  Shania Twain  performing in the traditional Sunday Legends slot, but who else could be making an appearance?

Some fans are convinced Girls Aloud will drop in  thanks to a suspicious gap in their touring schedule , while others have noticed The Killers might have space to attend, or Kings Of Leon, who are already in the UK for their British Summer Time show on Sunday.

Fans are also keeping their fingers crossed for Taylor Swift, who is making her way around the country on her ERAs Tour… we’ll keep our fingers crossed.

Last year saw the  Foo Fighters  pop in to play a few songs, with past secret sets including the likes of Lady Gaga, Pulp, George Ezra, Mumford and Sons, and Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.

The NHS shares tips on staying safe in the heat as the sun peeks back out

The festival comes amid planned industrial action by junior doctors, with NHS Somerset sharing tips on how to ‘stay well’ during periods of hot weather to help ‘ease pressure on health and care’.

‘We know that services will be under pressure this week,’ Dr Bernie Marden, chief medical officer for NHS Somerset, said.

‘With Glastonbury Festival also taking place this week and expected warm weather, we are sharing a few reminders about simple steps people can take to look after themselves, and stay healthy and well.’

As the temperatures increase, it is important to, according to NHS guidance:

• Keep out of the sun at the hottest time of the day, between 11am-3pm
• If this is not possible, wear appropriate clothing, like a hat, seek shade and apply sunscreen
• Drink plenty of fluids like water and diluted squash, but swap sugary drinks for sugary free alternatives
• Limit alcoholic drinks, which can make you more dehydrated

Glastonbury’s food prices outrageously revealed to be the same as London

Food in Worthy Farm, Somerset, this weekend is set to be outrageously high – matching that of London, in fact.

After the price of a pint was branded ‘criminal’ at £6.50 , it turns out that a toastie isn’t that much more.

There’s an impressive 300 food vendors and 100 bars dotted across the site this year, but you may want to scour around for the best deal, especially as the extortionate breakfast prices have been revealed.

‘Was listening to some clown on radio this morning who has got a food and refreshment stall at Glastonbury. He seems to think £9.50 is fair price for a cheese toastie. What a f**king rip off!’ Matthew fumed on X.

According to LadBible , other meals will be just as expensive, with fries ranging from £4 to £7, burgers more than £10, loaded nachos up to £13 and burritos between £9.50 and £12.

Who is playing at Glastonbury today?

The second day of Glastonbury is in full swing, and while it may be a while before the Pyramid Stage hosts headliners   Dua Lipa , Coldplay, and  Sza , with the legends slot taken up by none other than Shania Twain, there’s still plenty happening around Worthy Farm today.

Across the weekend there are  heaps of 00s icons  like  The Feeling , Scouting For Girls, and  Avril Lavigne  as well as British newcomers  Caity Baser  and  Baby Queen .

From Dove and Shygirl on the Levels stage, to Scarlett O’Malley part of the Firmly Rooted line-up and Lady Shaka on the Lonely Hearts Club stage, Thursday is jam-packed.

Could there be an answer to single-use tents?

200,000 people are expected to hit Worthy Farm for Glastonbury Festival, and many will be pitching  pop-up tents for the first and last time.

However, there may be a solution to avoiding the sea of leftover tents that are abandoned every year: cardboard tents.

And not to worry, they won’t disintegrate into papery mush when it inevitably rains, as the two-person tent is made of a water-resistant cardboard that can still be recycled, because it has no special coatings – just fewer surface holes.

Tayla Evans, 21, developed her cardboard creation, called EnviroTent, to help tackle the issue of ‘tent trash’.

‘The UK festival scene is amazing,’ she said. ‘But it’s also an annual source of single-use plastic pollution, and increasingly, that is something people feel rightly uncomfortable about. Festivals should be guilt-free and fun.

‘I would love festival organisers to think really carefully about how we can help festival goers avoid tent trash – that is what EnviroTents is all about.’

The Nation’s PE Teacher Joe Wicks touched down in Glastonbury to lead a bustling workout session

New father Joe Wicks took his famous workout routines to Gateway stage at Glastonbury on Thursday morning to get festivalgoers up and raring to go.

Thousands flocked to catch the upbeat workout session which included running on the spot, Spider-Man lunges and squat jumps.

This comes a year after he led 2,000 attendees at Park stage, turning the activity into a somewhat annual tradition.

‘I want to bring fitness to the festival, get people moving and give everyone a big smile to start their weekend with,’ he told PA.

‘People that have done my lockdown workouts will be here today. I love doing these events you know, I don’t need to be here doing this, but I actually love it.’

And the Body Coach, who gained millions of followers over lockdown, has high hopes for hitting Glastonbury’s famous Pyramid Stage next year. ‘I’m hoping if I get in their good books and I deliver a great session maybe they say ‘look bring it to the Pyramid – let’s make it an epic first ever HIIT work on the Pyramid Stage,’ he added.

His newborn son Dusty, who he shares with wife Rosie, was born just ten days ago and is his fourth child alongside  Indie, five, Marley, three, and Leni, one.

‘I’m so happy, I’m so content because I feel like my family is complete now,” he gushed about the new addition

‘He’s cute, Rosie is good, the baby’s good, I’m just not getting much sleep – so I need this workout to give me some energy.’

Joe will return to the Park stage for another fitness session on Friday at 10am, to put more festival-goers through their paces.

Glastonbury goers offered ‘vegan alternatives to cocaine’ and laughing gas to enjoy festivities

The annual musical festival has started with its usual chaotic energy after one stall perched at Worthy Farm appeared to be selling an alternative for any environment and health conscious party-goers looking to enhance their experience.

That’s right, for those not in the know, the notorious drug is not vegan-friendly since it is created by ripping rainforests apart. It’s production has been linked to deforestation in Colombia.

But botanical brand Karmaceuticals has the solution.

The company was spotted selling tiny bottles of the strange concoction at the festival , describing their product as a ‘tool’ to ‘help you be your best authentic self and boss Glasto weekend like an absolute legend’.

It boasts to help with the ‘over-consumption, over-stimulation and burn-out’ as a result of the non-stop jubilations.

If that isn’t quite your cup of tea then you can try your hand at laughing gas balloons – coming in a range of colours.

Festivalgoers were spotted with the special balloons while surrounded by several GoldWhip cannisters that offer ‘nitro-infused creations’.

In short, there’s no end to the fascinating, and bizarre, ways to add an extra layer of enjoyment to the five-day extravaganza.
