Top 5 Apps to Print Photo Books from Apple Photos

Arnold Zafra

Despite many people sharing their photos with friends and families through electronic means, there are some who still print and compile their photos. Once they’ve gathered enough photos, these people have them produced into photo books. Believe it or not, there are still apps or services that provide photo book printing services. I’ve rounded up the top five apps to print photo books from Apple photos, should you be inclined to immortalize your iPhone photos into a printed book.

Apple Used to Provide Photo Book Service, But Not Anymore

Apple started offering photo printing in 2002 directly through what was previously known as the iPhoto platform. Through this service, you could order pictures, calendars, photo books, and other printed products that featured photos you’d taken using your iPhone. But when Apple replaced iPhoto with the Photos app, it did not include the photo printing service as one of its features.

However, folks were still able to order picture books through their Mac. This went on for 15 more years until the Cupertino-based tech giant decided to cease offering the service in 2018. This forced those who still wanted to create mementos and keepsakes of photos they took using their beloved iPhones to use third-party apps and services to print photo books from their Apple photos.

That being said, find below the top five apps that you can consider using to have your Apple Photos immortalized into photo books.

5 Free Apps to Print Photo Books from Apple Photos

The following apps are all free to download and use to create your photo books. The cost of the printed product, however, will vary based on the particular service used, size of the photos, number of pages and selected finishing options.

Mimeo iPhone app screenshots

The Mimeo app provides you with a good selection of templates that you can use for your photo book. There are also a wide variety of backgrounds and other customization features that you can use to create your photo book. Initially, the Mimeo app was available only for Mac, but a version for iOS was also released a bit later.

With the Mimeo app, you’ll be able to choose more than 50 themes, including those from Apple’s iPhoto app. The app also lets you use preset layouts, solid or patterned backgrounds, and borders to make your photos stand out. And once you’re done, you can compile these photos into photo books. The Mimeo photo book service offers you five size options in either hard or soft covers. Prices of the photo books vary depending on the size.

Availability: Free.

  • Features iPhoto’s templates.
  • Allows you to create photo books within the Photos app.
  • Provides limited text formatting options.

➡️ Get Mimeo

Shutterfly iPhone app screenshots

When it comes to layout your photo books, the Shutterfly app provides you with more than 265 templates. The app’s editing workspace is also a pleasure to use, offering you a good selection of backgrounds, customization features, and more than 100 text fonts.

When designing your photo books, you’ll be glad to know that Shutterfly’s workflow for doing so is pretty straightforward. All the customization options are on the right sidebar and when you select one option, you can immediately see the effect on the photo book preview on the left side of your iPhone’s screen.

  • User-friendly interface.
  • Offers a lot of options for designing your photo books.
  • No cons on the app but the cost of photo books tends to be on the pricey side.

➡️ Get Shutterfly

Chatbooks Family Photo Albums

Chatbooks iPhone app screenshot

Another photo book app that has withstood the test of time since 2014 is Chatbooks. This is probably due to the fact that the service offers two options for saving customers’ memories into photo books. One is through monthly subscriptions whereby the app takes care of producing the photo book. The other option is letting customers create their photo books manually.

The Chatbooks app can also send notifications when a customer’s photo books are due to be ordered. Similar to Shutterfly and Mimeo, Chatbooks can have direct access to your device’s camera roll if you allow it. Other features of Chatbooks include the inclusion or exclusion of date, location, and a personal caption of each photo you include in the book. It can also automatically crop unwanted parts of your photos.

  • The online editor has a simple interface.
  • Contribution option feature.
  • Availability of subscription service.
  • Limited customization features
  • Lack of page order editing.

Mixbook Photo Books

Mixbook iPhone app screenshots

Mixbook is another popular photo book printing service that comes with a pretty good app for iPhone or iPad. And yes, it also has an online platform where you can design your photo books as well. The Mixbook app allows you to design your photo books by offering various customization features such as templates, backgrounds, book covers, fonts, and more.

The app is very easy to use and you can pretty much come up with a photo book that looks like it was done by professionals. Once your photo book is ready to print, you can just hit the order button and it is sent to Mixbook for processing.

  • Easy to use interface.
  • Availability of customization options such as backgrounds, templates, stickers, and more.
  • Also lets you use your own stickers in the photo book.
  • No cons to the app, but the pricing of printed photo books is a bit expensive.

➡️ Get Mixbook Photo Books

Once Upon Photo Book Creator

Once Upon Book Creator iPhone app screenshot

Once Upon Photo Book Creator has received some pretty good reviews from those who’ve used the app to create their photo books. Similar to the other apps mentioned above, Once Upon also features a simple interface when designing a photo book.

The app lets you invite friends and family to collaborate on the design and layout of your photo book including the selection of photos to include. It also lets you drag and drop photos for the best possible arrangements.

  • The shuffle function lets you highlight your favorite layout.
  • Easy image selection feature.
  • Lets you add a caption for each photo.
  • The interface can be pretty confusing to use when creating your photo book.

➡️ Get Once Upon Photo Book Creator

Final Words: Which App to Use to Create Your Photo Book

There you have it, The top five apps you can use to have your photos from your iPhone, iPad, or even Mac printed and immortalized into a photo book. Please note that this list is for apps to print photos from your device’s camera roll. Although we’ve mentioned a bit about the pricing of printing photo books, the round-up does not include the printing service itself.

The question now is, which app are you going to use to have your Apple photos printed into photo books? That depends on how far you want to go when it comes to producing your photo books. In the meantime, I suggest you try designing your photo book first using any of these apps. Then when you are satisfied with the customization options, then it’s time for you to decide which photo book printing service to use.

The best printer (and application to print) is the one that is NOT used. We are destroying planet Earth (the only site in the Universe with life) but it seems that some do not care. We must act (or not act) now. Tomorrow will be too late.

In many ways better, in one way, worse

Overall, I was pleased after making my first photo book with Motif. It was much more customizable than the old Apple program, but there are a couple of things that I hope to see fixed. 1. Photos get lost in the binding. After getting the book inthe mail, I noticed that all photos on the page that border the binding lose some of the photo. I checked the program to see if I did something wrong. The only way to fix it is to then have a much too big space at the binding. Also, I would then have to manually change ever last page. 2. It would be nice if adding a text box dousn't automatically reformat the size of the photos on the page. Sometimes it's nice to just put the text over the photos, not just under them. 3. Changing the background color to the pages is a pain. Why can't I select all pages and make the change one time to cover every page, or however many pages I select? One at a time is a waste of my time. These are suggestions to make it better, but overall, I am pleased and already working on my next photo book.

Developer Response ,

Hi WoodenRabbit75, we apologize for the late reply and that working with Motif was unsatisfactory for you. Thank you for sharing your comments with us. Be kindly noted that since your review our Development Team has been constantly improving Motif for our customers. Our app has been improved from version 1.9.2 to 2.1+ which offers a lot of improvements. Kind regards, the Motif Team

Excellent for photo books

I used Motif for two photo books with my MacBook Air. These were the first photo books I have ever prepared. I looked at several applications and programs and selected Motif because it appeared to be easier to use. I also liked it because I did not need to upload photos until I had completed the project. Although I had a learning curve at the beginning of the first photo book, I also found it relatively easy to make adjustments. I really liked the features - the many different page layouts and text options, the ways to move sets of two pages, the different kinds of photos books (hard cover or soft cover and different sizes), the ability to edit photos as I was working on the photo book. I have received each of these photo books from Motif. They were processed within 2-3 days, and both are beautiful. I had to call customer support twice, and both of those contacts were positive. The only thing I wish could be changed, although it may be difficult, is if one page could be changed at a time, rather than two pages. Otherwise, I highly recommend Motif. I will use Motif the next time I want to make a photo book - and actually can't wait to use Motif again. I am so pleased with Motif's application and product. Thank you!
Hi MCats2, thanks for your feedback! We are very happy that the final product and our service was satisfactory for you! We will pass along your feedback to our Development Team for consideration in future releases of Motif. If you haven't already done so, we'd like to invite you to subscribe to our newsletter at www.motifphotos.com/en-us to stay up-to-date with the latest news from us. We hope to see you again soon! Regards, the Motif Team

Change is not always easy!

I have made many photo books previously in Photo. I was not too happy when they announced that it would go away and be replaced with Motif. I am never excited about learning a new program. I played around with Motif early on and was not too thrilled with what I saw. After a trip to New Orleans recently, I decided to try again. I am very please to report that Motif is easy to learn and I made a great book. There are a few things that are different and maybe a little clunky, but it could be me. First, I would love to see a option where a large image or panorama could be spread over two pages. Second, I was using my MacBook Pro and it crashed a few times. When I quit a few programs in the background it worked flawlessly. Third, it seems that most of my old books are not converting correctly. I am hoping that is a glitch that will be fixed. I also would like an option to place text right on the photo. For the most part, it was easy, fun and painfree. I look forward to making my next project and seeing what improvements are added. I have not received my book yet and will write another review on the quality of the product.
Hi Sobie1951, Thank you for giving Motif another try and taking the time to write this review. We use customer feedback to improve our app so look for an even better Motif in future releases. You'll find videos on adding text to layouts, full-page spread images, and many other topics by visiting www.motifphotos.com/en-us/support. We hope this helps and look forward to your next photo project. By the way, we’d also like to let you know, Motif recently launched its iOS version. This means you can create photo books directly from your iPhone or iPad. Just download Motif Photos iOS for free from the App Store. Kind regards, The Motif Team.

5 alternatives to Apple’s discontinued print services for photo books, calendars, and cards

Avatar for Michael Potuck

Custom photo books and calendars make great gifts, and it’s fun to set yourself apart with unique holiday greeting cards. However, after Apple announced it would be discontinuing its native photo printing services  this past fall, this is the first holiday season that users will need to find a substitute. Follow along for five alternatives to print your photo books, calendars, and cards with the Photos App on Mac as well as iPhone and the web.

Even though Apple discontinued its printing services that were built-in to its Photos app, users don’t necessarily have to use a completely different app to get prints. Apple is supporting Photos extensions from third-parties to offer printing options.

We learned that the printing partner Apple worked with for its first-party solution, RR Donnelley , has released Motif as one Photos extension choice. Apple later released a support document sharing a few other plug-ins like Mimeo , Mpix , and more.

As far as these third-party extensions go, none have stellar ratings so far. Some of the low ratings have to do with frustration about how they are different from the previous built-in printing options, and some include feedback on features that need to be added or changed.

For now, Motif has the highest rating with 2.7/5 stars. We’ll look at three Photos extensions for Mac and then a couple of other options from Google and using your local pharmacy like Walgreens with iPhone and more.

5 alternatives to Apple’s print services for photo books, calendars, and cards

As mentioned, this is the software made by the partner who provided the back-end for Apple’s first-party printing services. Motif works within Photos and offers image suggestions, Dark Mode support, and variety of themes for printing your photo books, calendars, and cards.

The company also has a 100% satisfaction guarantee and will offer a refund or reprint a product if you’re not happy with the result.

Motif is a free download from the Mac App Store.

Once you’ve downloaded the app, click  Open , follow the prompts and you’ll be redirected to the Photos app. Look for  Projects  in the bottom left area of your sidebar and click the + as shown below.

Books start from $10, calendars are priced at $20, and cards start from $0.99.

Mimeo offers the same services as Motif with about the same prices. Since it’s free to download these Photos extensions, it can be nice to try a few to find the exact theme you’re looking for.

At the time of writing, Mimeo looks to be offering users 20% of their initial order.

make photo books from mac

Mpix offers similar printing services as Motif and Mimeo, but includes printing on more unique materials like metal, wood, and more.

In the little time I’ve spent in each of the apps, Motif and Mimeo seem to offer a better user interface, but if a unique metal or wood print is enticing, Mpix may be worth checking out.

Google Photos

You won’t find a Mac app or integration with Photos from Google, but it does offer web-based and iOS app printing services that are seamless to use.

In the Google Photos app, tap on  Albums  →  …   in the top right corner →  Create Photo  Book . Google Photos for iOS is a free download from the App Store.

make photo books from mac

On the web, you can log in to access your Google Photos albums , or import images manually. The only downside with Google’s printing options is that only photo books are available for now.

make photo books from mac

A traditional meets techy approach is making use of your local pharmacy like Walgreens . With the Walgreens iOS app or website , you can create projects and order them for same-day pick up at your nearest location.

You can also print right from your iPhone as well as direct from your Instagram or Facebook account. Walgreens is running a special with up to 40% off its print products through December 29th  (and even better deals this week ).

The Walgreens iOS app is a free download from the App Store. Apple bonus, Walgreens accepts Apple Pay 😄👌🏼.

make photo books from mac

Alright, here’s a bonus option. Shutterfly may be one of the most popular names in the game and the service is running up to 60% off cards, calendars, books , and more through tonight. It also runs special promotions through its iOS app .

In contrast to some of the new Mac app Photos extensions, Shutterfly for iOS has an impressive 4.7/5 star rating and regularly runs solid deals  (don’t worry if you miss out on the one happening at the time of this writing).

Even though Apple mentions a Shutterfly Photos extention , it doesn’t seem to be available on the Mac App Store yet. However, going through the web and iOS are easy enough and are likely to net customers the best prices.

If you end up going with a mail-order service, don’t wait too long to make sure you get your project in time. For more help getting the most out of your Apple devices, check out our how to guide .

How to order photo prints, books, cards, and more on the Mac in 2022

make photo books from mac

No matter who you are, everyone loves to take pictures. These photos are memories that we want to preserve for a lifetime, or they can even be artistic ways that we express ourselves and want to show off around the home. This is why we like to get photos printed out, turned into books, turned into cards for special occasions, or even put them on mugs and other accessories.

Apple used to offer their own in-house photo printing service with its Photos app, but that was discontinued sometime in 2018. While Photos for Mac still has the option to get photo prints, it must be done through a third-party extension that you can get in the Mac App Store.

  • How to set up and start using Photos on your Mac

Let's go through the new way of getting photos printed on your Mac.

How to install a Photo Extension for Photos on Mac

  • How to use a Photo Extension to print photos from Mac

My personal method for photo printing from my Mac

  • Launch Photos on your Mac.
  • Select one or more photos that you want to print.

Select one or more photos

  • Click File in the menu bar, or right click to bring up a menu.
  • Options include: Book , Calendar , Card , Wall Decor , Prints , Slideshow , and Other .
  • Click App Store to go straight to available apps that offer Photo Extensions .

Right click on photo, select Create, choose method, click App Store

  • Click Get on an app to download it.

Click Get to download a Photo Extensions app

You are able to download as many apps as you want or need and use the extension with Photos. These apps will simply appear in the list of apps available when you select the Create option next time.

How to use a Photos Extension to print photos from Mac

Once you have some apps installed that support Photos Extensions, it's easy to use them.

Select your photos

  • Click File in the menu bar, or right click on the selected photo to bring up the menu.
  • Hover the cursor over Create , then select what you want to print.
  • Click the app you want to use.

Right click, select Create, choose method, pick app

  • Follow the on-screen instructions for that particular app to complete your photo print.

You can also click on the App Store option from the Create menu to once again bring up the section in the App Store with available Photo Extensions apps if you want to try out more.

I take a lot of photos with my iPhones. Whenever I'm out and about, I end up taking photos whenever I can if it's something interesting, or just those moments with friends and family that I want to remember. I usually just use those photos in my Day One journal entries, but sometimes there are significant life events that deserve something more. Here's how I get my important photos printed from my Mac.

Photos in the cloud

iCloud Photo Stream and Dropbox combo

Currently, I use a combination of Dropbox and iCloud Photo Stream for keeping backups of my iPhone photos on my Macs.

I like Photo Stream because it's automatic and fairly seamless, and I use this over iCloud Photos because I still have albums on my iPhone that were synced from my Mac, and I don't want to remove those. Photo Stream lets me access my photos from the last 30 days, which is fine for me.

My permanent photo backup solution, which I use as a failsafe in case something goes wrong with Photo Stream, is Dropbox. Sometimes I end up forgetting to upload my photos for a few days, but I try to launch Dropbox at least once a day so my photos automatically upload to my 2TB Dropbox Plus account. I have years of photos in my Dropbox, so I can always browse it for what I need.

For my wedding last year, I was given digital copies through Google Drive. I saved all of the photos to my hard drive, and then uploaded them into Dropbox in appropriately labeled folders.

When I need to get these photos into Photos on Mac, I simply import them from their source folder.

  • How to import images and folders into Photos

Create albums for what you want printed

Separate what you want printed in their own album

As I said, I have a ton of photos. When they end up in Photos on Mac, it's kind of a big mess. I'll have to go through each Day to see what happened or go through a ton of photos in a folder, which I may not want all of them printed.

When I go through my pictures in Photos, I think about what I want to be printed. Whether it's just prints, or a photo book, or something I want to send my mom for the holidays, I think the photos I choose should tell a kind of story. Or just look good. I mean, why else would anyone want to print out photos?

To make it easier, I select the photos I want to print and create a new album for them. I label this album with what I want to do, such as "Wedding Book," "Family Prints," "Christmas Cards," etc. That way, these photos are already set aside, and I can quickly select them for printing.

Designing and ordering my projects

Christine and Robert's Wedding book through Motif

For my wedding, I wanted to have my favorite wedding photos arranged in a book to tell the story. While there are plenty of photo printing services out there, for this I chose to use Motif .

With Motif, it's easy to make a photo book in minutes. Just select your photos, then choose the size and format (hardcover or softcover) of your book. Then Motif loads up your photos in print-ready resolution, and you're off! As you pick a theme, it will give you some sample pages underneath the theme selector. If you want to go the easy route, just select Autoflow Book . With Autoflow, Motif goes through and picks out your best images and removes duplicates. You can always go back and add more photos, reduce the number of pages, and Motif will do all the heavy lifting for you.

If you want to have complete control, select Don't Autoflow . You'll then be able to design each page by choosing what photos should be shown, and you can add text to tell your story. Each page's layout can be changed if you aren't satisfied with it, you can add text along the bottom, or increase the size of a photo space if needed.

Christine and Robert's wedding book pages

Personally, I like to put my photos in my book in chronological order. This way, it tells the story I want it to tell. I go with Don't Autoflow and it may take a while to get everything in the place I want it to be, but the result is my own creation, and it's well worth the time and effort. Motif is pretty easy to work with, as far as dragging photos around, resizing, swapping, etc. It also saves your work every few moments, so your work is safe.

Shutterfly extension in Photos

Source: iMore

If I am looking for individual photo prints, I prefer using Shutterfly , as I've used them before for several projects. With Shutterfly, you're able to choose the size and finish, put a message on the back of all prints, and select how many you want. They start at $0.12 for 4x6 and go up to $12.74 for a 12x36 print. The prices are decent, and there are often promo codes and deals. Shutterfly is also great for putting your photos on other items, such as travel mugs, totes, cards, canvas, ornaments, and pretty much anything else you can think of.

For designing things like mugs and totes, I like to pick out photos that hold a special meaning to me, or would just look good on some merch. Shutterfly's drag-and-drop interface on the web is intuitive and easy to use.

Personalize and print

While Apple may not be doing the printing themselves anymore, they made it easy to work with third-party photo printing services directly in the Photos app on Mac. Some (like Motif) are integrated directly into Photos, and others (Shutterfly) will need you to go to the website to complete your order, but it's all a seamless process.

Are you using a Photo Extension to print out your photos from Mac? What service do you like using? Let us know in the comments.

Impulse Buys Under $25 That Actually Make Great Gifts

Is Memorial Day a good time to buy a laptop?

Memorial Day brought some pretty great deals on laptops with the potential to save you hundreds of dollars, but  Black Friday  is notorious for having the absolute best laptop deals. If you can't wait all the way until the end of the year, you can save big bucks during the last-minute extension of some of the best Memorial Day deals.

Where are the best Memorial Day laptop sales?

Tons of retailers are still holding sales on laptops for Memorial Day. Some of those retailers include Costco, Best Buy , Amazon and Target. You can shop these sales either online or in-store, whichever you prefer. There are also discounts directly on brand websites like LG and HP.

What else is on sale for Memorial Day?

We're still seeing savings on TVs , appliances ,  furniture and more, despite Memorial Day weekend having come and gone. Here is a roundup of the  best Memorial Day deals  still happening right now.

How we choose the best Memorial Day laptop deals

Many of us at CNET have covered shopping events for over five years, including  Black Friday ,  Prime Day ,  Memorial Day  and countless other shopping events. We've gotten good at weeding out scams and superficial deals, so you'll see only the best offers on our lists.

We look for real discounts, quality reviews and remaining sale time when choosing laptop deals to show you. We have a team of experts who have tested hundreds of laptops to make sure we're bringing you the best options at the best prices.

  • Real discounts mean exactly that. We look at the price history for that product to make sure no brands are inflating prices to make the discount seem more substantial than it is.
  • Quality reviews and testing are important for any product, including laptops. If you're unhappy the first time you turn it on, the discount wasn't worthwhile.
  • Remaining sale time is a huge part of our vetting process. If a deal seems like it will only be around for a short while or will only be available for the remaining stock, we'll let you know upfront so you don't come back to the deal later only to be disappointed.

The evidence that led to Trump’s hush money conviction

The prosecution’s case against Trump relied on 34 documents: 11 invoices, 12 vouchers and 11 checks.

Throughout Donald Trump’s hush money trial, prosecutors repeatedly told jurors not to rely on what Michael Cohen, their key witness and the ex-president’s former lawyer and fixer, had said in court.

Instead, they should focus their attention on the paper trail.

The jury seems to have done that, finding Trump guilty on all 34 counts of falsifying business records. At the heart of the prosecution’s case against Trump were 34 documents: 11 invoices, 12 vouchers and 11 checks. Each of these documents accounted for one of the charges on which Trump was found guilty.

Prosecutors alleged that these documents show that Trump intentionally misclassified payments to Cohen that reimbursed him for hush money he gave adult-film actress Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election. The hush money was to keep Daniels quiet about a sexual encounter she says she had with Trump in 2006 — an allegation Trump denies.

In total, the prosecution found that Cohen was paid $420,000 by Trump and his trust in 2017. Cohen told jurors in his testimony that this sum was discussed at a meeting with Trump and then-Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg days before Trump’s inauguration. It includes the $130,000 in hush money, $50,000 toward a vendor payment Cohen had addressed for Trump, $180,000 to cover any tax liability on those two payments and a $60,000 bonus.

The various amounts were documented on a handwritten note by former Trump Organization controller Jeffrey McConney, who testified to a separate meeting with Weisselberg where they discussed the repayment plan to Cohen.

In the meeting with Trump and Weisselberg, Cohen testified, the men decided he would be repaid for his $130,000 payment to Daniels through twelve $35,000 payments.

Here’s an overview of how the reimbursement process worked each month, according to the evidence presented by prosecutors:

Each month, Cohen filed what he said were phony

invoices seeking payment for legal services.

The prosecution alleges these invoices were then

recorded incorrectly as legal expenses.

Finally, Cohen was paid via check — nine of which

carried Trump’s distinctive signature.

And here are the 34 exhibits the prosecution introduced into evidence to support their claim of a paper trail to reimburse Cohen for his payment to Daniels.

In total, Cohen sent 11 invoices to Weisselberg in 2017 for “services rendered.” He later testified that no services were in fact rendered, and that the check was really “reimbursement of hush money.”

In total, 12 vouchers were created to record the payments to Cohen. Vouchers are a standard business practice to record how much money a company spends, and to detail who is paid and why, but the prosecution alleges that these vouchers inaccurately describe the money being paid to Cohen as a legitimate legal expense. The voucher entries were recorded by Trump Organization bookkeeper Deborah Tarasoff, who testified that authorization to pay Cohen came from Weisselberg and another top financial officer of the company.

In total, 11 checks were made out to Cohen, totaling $420,000. Two of the checks were from the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust Account, but nine were from Trump’s personal account.
