Each page of this wordless book by newcomer Banyai is a close- up detail from the scene on the next page. The drawings are realistic in slightly bedazzled colors, and the effect is of a movie camera panning backward, faster and faster, beginning with the red comb of a jaunty rooster and ending with a distant view of Earth whirling through space. Along the way, several surprises unfold, as each commonplace detail is shown to be but a small piece contained in a totally unexpected scene. Once readers reach the end, they can work from back to front for a zoom-in effect. The images are not always compelling, but this book has the fascinating appeal of such works of visual trickery as the Waldo and Magic Eye books. (Picture book. 4+)

BECAUSE I HAD A TEACHER

by Kobi Yamada ; illustrated by Natalie Russell ‧ RELEASE DATE: March 1, 2017

A sweet, soft conversation starter and a charming gift.

A paean to teachers and their surrogates everywhere.

This gentle ode to a teacher’s skill at inspiring, encouraging, and being a role model is spoken, presumably, from a child’s viewpoint. However, the voice could equally be that of an adult, because who can’t look back upon teachers or other early mentors who gave of themselves and offered their pupils so much? Indeed, some of the self-aware, self-assured expressions herein seem perhaps more realistic as uttered from one who’s already grown. Alternatively, readers won’t fail to note that this small book, illustrated with gentle soy-ink drawings and featuring an adult-child bear duo engaged in various sedentary and lively pursuits, could just as easily be about human parent- (or grandparent-) child pairs: some of the softly colored illustrations depict scenarios that are more likely to occur within a home and/or other family-oriented setting. Makes sense: aren’t parents and other close family members children’s first teachers? This duality suggests that the book might be best shared one-on-one between a nostalgic adult and a child who’s developed some self-confidence, having learned a thing or two from a parent, grandparent, older relative, or classroom instructor.

TALES FOR VERY PICKY EATERS

TALES FOR VERY PICKY EATERS

by Josh Schneider & illustrated by Josh Schneider ‧ RELEASE DATE: May 1, 2011

Broccoli: No way is James going to eat broccoli. “It’s disgusting,” says James. Well then, James, says his father, let’s consider the alternatives: some wormy dirt, perhaps, some stinky socks, some pre-chewed gum? James reconsiders the broccoli, but—milk? “Blech,” says James. Right, says his father, who needs strong bones? You’ll be great at hide-and-seek, though not so great at baseball and kickball and even tickling the dog’s belly. James takes a mouthful. So it goes through lumpy oatmeal, mushroom lasagna and slimy eggs, with James’ father parrying his son’s every picky thrust. And it is fun, because the father’s retorts are so outlandish: the lasagna-making troll in the basement who will be sent back to the rat circus, there to endure the rodent’s vicious bites; the uneaten oatmeal that will grow and grow and probably devour the dog that the boy won’t be able to tickle any longer since his bones are so rubbery. Schneider’s watercolors catch the mood of gentle ribbing, the looks of bewilderment and surrender and the deadpanned malarkey. It all makes James’ father’s last urging—“I was just going to say that you might like them if you tried them”—wholly fresh and unexpected advice. (Early reader. 5-9)

Discussing books on zoom: the pros & cons.

zoom books reviews

Discussion Length

One-fifth of respondents whose book clubs have been meeting virtually say their discussions have been longer than when they met in person before the pandemic. Common reasons include fewer demands on their time and that the virtual format has caused their group to shift some of their social time to discussion. 29% of respondents say their discussions have generally been shorter. A common reason for this is that the group is using the free version of Zoom which restricts meetings of three or more people to 40-minutes. In earlier research studies, we've found that the most popular discussion length for a book club is 50-60 minutes, with many spending considerably longer, so being limited to 40-minutes has been a frustration. Some groups are fortunate to have a member who has a paid Zoom subscription or they have pooled together to pay for one; some groups simply schedule back-to-back meetings, so when the first 40-minute meeting times out, they move to the next.

We are more respectful of time since we are using a free Zoom account, which has a time limit. We've worked around the short time by scheduling two meetings separated by a one-minute gap.

Discussion Quality

Significant numbers of respondents note that they feel there is a lack of spontaneity in Zoom discussions. The virtual format tends to require each person to wait their turn to speak, whereas in-person conversations can develop more organically, with participants piping up whenever they feel inclined to comment.

Spontaneity is alive and well when meeting in person. It's nearly impossible in Zoom meetings. We are friends first, so we miss being able to share personal conversations in the limited time available on Zoom.

That said, others observe that there are distinct advantages to the virtual format, especially for members who may be a little hesitant to speak up in a large group.

Being virtual there seems to be an understanding that the person speaking gets full attention. So less interrupting and less wandering off topic. Some of the quieter people have participated more via Zoom than they did in person. There are fewer side conversations between people since all the discussion is available to all. We stay on task more. But that is also sad, because there is less conversation. It feels more like a class than a discussion.

While 19% say that they feel their group's discussions are less focused on Zoom, 29% feel they are more focused than they used to be in-person; and with less time spent socializing, some find they are having leaner, more concentrated meetings that can result in deeper conversations.

Our meetings are shorter and more focused during the pandemic. We spend more time actually discussing the book we read for that month. Some have commented that they like the virtual meetings because the discussions stay on topic, and I have noticed the difference of fewer distracting sidebar conversations.

Of course, some have had the opposite experience. Anytime technology is introduced into the mix, there are bound to be some glitches and stumbling blocks along the way.

Zoom has made our exchanges more awkward—there is always someone who can't hear, the camera is wonky or they are just frustrated with the format.

Socializing vs Discussion Time on Zoom

As already mentioned, based on our past research, the great majority of book clubs spend at least 40 minutes focused on book discussion, and spend more of their meeting time on discussion than they do on socializing. But even the most dedicated book groups generally carve out at least a few minutes for social time. About half of the respondents in book clubs meeting virtually say that their group is spending less time socializing. What's interesting is that opinions vary as to whether this is positive or negative to their book group experience. Some miss the communal aspect of sharing food and drink in a convivial location, and the absence of this was a common factor for cutting back on social time:

Fewer people participate with Zoom. The socializing part of it has definitely changed. We aren't able to do our themed food and drink. Not much we can do about it. Miss meeting in person; miss having the time to socialize in addition to our book discussions. We miss our hugs, miss the relaxed atmosphere when sharing food and beverage, miss the warmth and ambiance of homes and hearths.

However, others observe that their Zoom meetings are more focused on book discussion, with some also noting that their group had gotten smaller due to some members opting out of the virtual format, resulting in more satisfying discussions.

Too many people before made it difficult to have in-depth discussions as the moderator was busy trying to make sure everybody had a chance to contribute, and some were more interested in socializing anyway. The group is smaller now so we can get more stuck in. I think our meetings are more focused on the actual book & discussing it vs. socializing at a restaurant.

Going Forward

Whether you love it or hate it, if your book club is meeting on Zoom, there may be at least one or two changes you've made as a result of the experience that you'll want to maintain as and when you return to in-person meetings. As you might recall if you read our earlier post, Book Clubs During COVID: When Will We Meet Again? , a third of those who have been meeting virtually expect to retain a virtual element in the future. Of these, three percent expect to stay completely virtual; the remainder envisage a hybrid arrangement. For example, sometimes all the group would meet in person, while at other times (for example, during bad weather) they would all meet virtually; or if a member was sick or traveling and thus unable to join an in-person meeting, they would have the option to participate virtually. With the COVID-19 vaccine becoming more widely available, book clubs will be able to make the choices that are right for them. Before too long, let us hope that the quarter of respondents to our October 2020 survey who said that their book club had not been meeting during the pandemic will be able to reconvene with their group. And those that have been meeting in a variety of new and different ways during the pandemic will be able to return to their old meeting format, while retaining some of the positive experiences and learnings from this unique time in our lives. ---Davina, BookBrowse Publisher

10 Virtual Book Clubs You Can Join Now—And How to Start Your Own

quarantine book club

W ith movies, concerts, bar trivia night and other live events canceled due to the coronavirus crisis, more and more people seem to be turning to literature to pass the time. Last week, TIME published a list of 30 books to hunker down with, from The Passage trilogy to Colson Whitehead’s Zone One .

While literature on its own offers solace and distraction, it can also become the backbone of community. Over the past few weeks, many digital book clubs have sprouted up across the globe, allowing people to interact with their favorite authors, discuss thorny moral questions or just see other human faces. “It’s like the book is an excuse for people to connect and look at other people,” Mike Monteiro, the co-founder of Quarantine Book Club , says.

Here are some of the most notable book clubs that will continue to offer online events going forward. Meanwhile, TIME books editor Lucy Feldman offers some tips about how to start your own community around reading.

#TolstoyTogether

While it might be an ideal time to finally crack open Tolstoy’s War and Peace, the 1,200-page epic is a daunting task to take on alone. The author Yiyun Li is currently leading a pilgrimage through the novel on the independent publisher A Public Space’s social media channels. “I have found that the more uncertain life is, the more solidity and structure Tolstoy’s novels provide,” Li wrote in her introductory post. “In these times, one does want to read an author who is so deeply moved by the world that he could appear unmoved in his writing.”

The group has been reading about 15 pages a day and are 100 pages in. A Public Space representative estimates that 3000 people are participating across the world, from Pakistan to Brazil to Norway. Li has been startled by the level of engagement: “I thought maybe five to ten people would read with me,” she says. She chose the novel in part because she hoped its pace and length would serve as a perfect antidote to the frenzied news cycle of the moment: “It’s a book that requires a lot of patience and support from each other,” she says. “If you are reading news or social media every day, you tend to get agitated and panicky. But this book is the opposite: it’s a long retrospective to history.”

Readers have also been finding curious similarities between the novel’s plot and current events:

While all the physical locations of the DC Public Library are closed, the library’s book club has moved to Twitter. Over the past week, the library has hosted a discussion about Elizabeth Acevedo’s With the Fire on High , about a high school student and mother who dreams of becoming a chef. The next discussion question will be posted on March 28 at 2 p.m., and then on April 4.

Quarantine Book Club

Every weekday since March 16, the Quarantine Book Club has hosted two Zoom talks daily with a variety of authors, from Myriam Gurba to Heather B. Armstrong. Mike Monteiro and Erika Hall, two designers who live in San Francisco, started the club when their own work opportunities dried up; their audience quickly ballooned beyond their circle of friends.

“People want human connection. They’re bored, they’re freaked out,” Monteiro tells TIME. “So you get on here and you talk to somebody who’s really good in their field.”

Monteiro says that over 200 people paid the $5 admission on Tuesday to listen to the graphic designer Aaron Draplin and ask him questions; the conversations have often extended past the books and toward the world at large. The Quarantine Book Club will continue twice a day for as long as people remain at home, with proceeds going to the authors as well as Monteiro and Hall’s design studio. The science fiction author and journalist Cory Doctorow arrives on April 1.

The Stranger ’s Quarantine Club

The Seattle-based publication The Stranger is hosting a reading and discussion of Albert Camus’ The Plague , a Nobel Prize winner written in 1947 in which an epidemic sweeps through a town on the Algerian coast. “Its relevance lashes you across the face,” Stephen Metcalf wrote in the LA Times on Monday . In the first week of the book club, dozens of readers from Mexico City to Ann Arbor sent in pictures of their reading chairs . The club will complete the book on March 30.

Silent Book Club

Guinevere de la Mare and Laura Gluhanich founded this club in 2012 as a potential outlet for introverts. “It provided a place for people to be able to get out of the house and meet up with a group—and not be forced to make awkward happy hour conversation, but to sit quietly for an hour and then chat about books,” de la Mare says. Since then, the club has grown to 260 chapters around the world in 31 countries. These chapters meet, read whatever book they’ve brought for an hour silently, and then share what they’ve learned.

De La Mare hopes that the club, which converted to virtual meet-ups a few weeks ago, can play a similar role for people struggling with living in isolation: “I hope that this provides a way to combat some loneliness,” she says. De La Mare says that in Kansas City, members have formed a tight-knit community and have even been exchanging books by leaving them on each other’s patios. Meanwhile, the chapter in Genoa, Italy, has seen a doubling in participants since the country went on lockdown.

Lez Book Club

For the past two and a half years, the Lez Book Club has been meeting in groups of 12 in pubs in London, providing a space for queer women to meet and share literature. The pivot to virtual meetings in the wake of coronavirus presents both a challenge and an opportunity for founder Eleonore Pratoussy: she wants to keep the meetings safe and intimate while also opening up her community to women around the world.

“There’s such a thirst from queer women and nonbinary people and trans people to come together,” Pratoussy says. “I’m hoping that this type of virtual book club will break the boundaries, and that any type of physical barrier will be removed so that anyone can join.”

The first virtual meetings will happen on Wednesday and Thursday evening; more information can be found by joining the group’s Instagram . “Reading a book at home alone is one of the small pleasures of life,” Pratoussy says. “Sharing your thoughts and ideas with other people about the book is another small pleasure of life.”

Rebel Book Club

Over the past five years, the Rebel Book Club has grown into a six-city organization with 1,000 active members who come to monthly nonfiction readings from London to Barcelona to Berlin. This month, they’re moving completely online to read and discuss the book #newpower with one of its authors, Jeremy Heimans. The book traces how the internet and social media have upended traditional power structures.

Ben Keene, the club’s co-founder, says that Rebel will continue hosting these monthly virtual book discussions, as well as a daily video chat called Rebel Book Pub, for the foreseeable future. Keene also says that 150 people have signed up for the club’s 14-day reading challenge, which set a goal for participants to finish a book in two weeks.

Lit Hub’s Virtual Book Channel

The Literary Hub is virtually hosting the type of programming that would ordinarily take place in bookstores around the country: book tour events, readings and Q&As. The first episode featured Kevin Nguyen talking about his debut novel New Waves— a heist narrative set inside the New York start-up world.

Translated Fiction Online Book Club

Six European publishing houses have teamed up to create this weekly Zoom series in which they take turns presenting a book from their catalogs. (The selected titles are sometimes discounted.) First up on March 26 is The Mussel Feast by Birgit Vanderbeke, a family drama set before the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Eric Cervini, a historian of LBGTQ+ politics and culture, has started a book and movie club on his Instagram page that is racking up thousands of views per video. He’s currently reading and discussing James Baldwin’s 1956 Giovanni’s Room , about an American in Paris.

Start Your Own

None of these book clubs may be right for you—or maybe you’d like to form your own community. Below, TIME books editor Lucy Feldman has some tips on how to get started and lead your own discussion.

The book: You can have a good book club discussion about a bad book, but it’s always more fun when members connect to the material (and in these times, who wants to invest energy in a book that feels like homework?). For your first meeting, start with an accessible novel — one with interesting characters, which are often more fun to debate than plot points.

The discussion: The best discussions arise out of questions that are open-ended so everyone can bring their own perspectives and offer more than simple “yes, I agree” or “no, I don’t” answers. As the leader, you’ll want to come prepared with more questions than you might think necessary. It’s also nice to ask a couple members to have a question ready so you can tap them when conversation starts to lag or you notice that they’re not getting involved (this is especially helpful if you have a member on the shy side who wants to participate but feels more comfortable knowing in advance what they’re going to say).

Encourage people to share their personal perspectives, but try to guide everyone to use “I” statements so they don’t accidentally alienate other members—and be prepared to mediate if people disagree.

And finally, remember that the most important thing right now is to bring people together and lift each other up. If you lose track of the topic at hand, well, that probably means you’re having the conversation you need to be having right now.

There's a New Accounting Tool in Town: Introducing LZ Books by LegalZoom

Heather Satterley

LegalZoom, in its recent unveiling of LZ Books, is charting a course through the waters of online business solutions. Launched on August 3, 2023, this novel accounting solution seeks to appeal to solopreneurs, a move that has intrigued industry observers. Especially given the potential dynamics this could introduce against a giant in this space: Intuit, the force behind QuickBooks and TurboTax.

Interestingly, LZ Books isn’t positioned as a full-fledged general ledger program. Instead, its functionalities and target audience mirror that of Intuit’s QuickBooks Self-Employed product. This tool, part of Intuit's suite, is tailored for freelancers, gig workers, and other individual entrepreneurs. It offers functionalities apt for those not requiring the complexities of a complete accounting system but seeking to efficiently manage their income and expenses. The market for such products, though smaller in comparison to comprehensive business accounting solutions, is significant. With the rise of the gig economy and increasing numbers of individuals turning to freelance or consultancy roles, there's a palpable demand for simpler, streamlined financial management tools.

LegalZoom’s focus on this niche contrasts with Intuit's broader strategic movements. Under the leadership of CEO Sasan Goodarzi, Intuit has outlined '5 Big Bets ', one of which zeroes in on mid-market companies. This shift implies a redirection of resources and attention towards larger entities, potentially opening a window for other players like LegalZoom to gain traction in the smaller business and solopreneur segment.

From Glendale, California, LegalZoom offers LZ Books with an array of features, including round-the-clock client payment options, automated financial categorization, and insights into cash flow. Furthermore, its integration with tax processes is poised to be a boon during tax season, especially for those enrolled in the LZ Tax plan.

While QuickBooks, particularly its comprehensive versions, has been a dominant presence in the small business accounting realm, LZ Books seems to be gearing up for a targeted disruption, focusing on a specific niche that might have felt overshadowed amidst Intuit’s larger ambitions.

CEO of LegalZoom, Dan Wernikoff, underscored the company’s mission to "Unleash Entrepreneurship” during the launch. The subtext, however, hints at LegalZoom's intent to establish itself as a pivotal legal and accounting advisor, particularly for small business owners.

The stage appears set for an intriguing tussle within this niche market segment. As the dynamics unfold, stakeholders, industry experts, and users alike will be keenly watching the ripples created by this new entrant.

For an in-depth overview of LZ Books and the broader palette of LegalZoom's offerings, readers are directed to LegalZoom.com .

I had a stroke year before last and had to stop business for a few years. I didn't want to change addresses again, but Mario at Legal Zoom listened to my situation and then explained all the product packages that Legal Zoom has. Inc. File originally created my LLC and now I know I should have come to Legal Zoom first. No Comparison. Thank You for your quick solutions for getting my business back in Legal perspective.

Professional and caring, accomplished goals in one call

Professional and caring. Helped me with personal and business matters due to my divorce. Von from the Subscriptions Department listened to me and guided me on what was needed because I had no idea.

Professional & helpful

The rep I spoke with was professional, patient and helpful. All my questions were answered and she even made me aware of new laws that had taken affect that I was not previously aware of.

This system was quite user friendly and I will absolutely recommend it

This system was quite user friendly and affordable. Then I also called the toll free number for clarifications, I spoke with Luis, he has to be the most patient and helpful person in the world, thanks Luis! and thanks LegalZoom!

Frustrating Customer Service Experience

I have used Legalzoom for a few years. I called in as I received 3 emails stating that my card on file was expiring and that the $250 registered agent fee would experience "disruption" if it wasn't updated. I did call in to cancel and believed everything was resolved until I somehow received a charge on my account. I called the day I was charged to dispute the charge but they would not refund the transaction even after speaking to a supervisor.

Jorge was very professional and…

Jorge was very professional and knowledgeable about the products I purchased. And was able to answer every question I had about them flawlessly.

Starting a Business is hard, but you don't have to do it alone!

They said they would call me and they did. They listened to me and then assisted, when I didn't even really know what I needed assistance with. There is so much to learn about starting a business and I felt clueless and ready to just give up. I didn't even know where to start. So explained step by step what I was having issues with and finally we got to the issue and resolved it. I still may be somewhat clueless now, but not nearly as I was before I asked for assistance. Thank you!

Thank you for allowing us to be there for you and for sharing your experience, Chris.

As a first time entrepreneur

As a first time entrepreneur, I had no idea of the steps I had to take to file my company name, get permits, etc. Jesus was the LegalZoom customer service person who helped me through the process. He guided me step by step and was patient with me as I'd read and go through everything on my screen and asked all my questions. He was knowledgeable but as important, he was calm and reassuring, not rushing me through the process. He also agreed to call me back on another day to help me through the other steps after I set-up the company bank account.

We’re thrilled to hear that you enjoyed your experience. Thank you for your feedback, Aileen!

Very slow and expensive

Very slow and expensive, 100$ to start, 50$ for ein# then 24$ filing fee, should of got it done at the court house for 25$ But I thought I was paying for a speedy response,on the spot documents and ein# being online and all, six days later still nothing, there response was, we gotta see if the I.r.s is available for applications, after they already took 175$ from me

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused, Joshua. We’ll partner you with a member of our Executive Escalations Team. They will reach out to you and address your concerns.

Good experience

Quick and easy set up of a new LLC. The website was very intuitive and the whole process (including a quick call to support due to a question I had that turned out to be me not understanding the process) to getting my appilication in to maybe 30 min. And 10/10 for the great customer service!

Thank you for taking the time to provide me with such positive feedback. It means a lot to us, Tim.

My experience was excellent!

My experience was excellent! Sara who assisted me was knowledgeable about Beneficial Ownership. Sara also told me about the Tax Services and was a pleasure to work with.

Legal Zoom is a hit!!!

Walk you through every part, patient and understanding. Even provided me with information moving forward.

PROFESSIONAL & HELPFUL TEAM PLAYER…

With a blend of expertise and compassion, Oscar navigated the complexities of my inquiries with ease, transforming uncertainty into clarity. Each interaction was marked by patience and understanding, as he skillfully addressed my concerns and provided guidance with unwavering professionalism. Oscar’s dedication to aiding me went beyond mere obligation; it resonated with a genuine desire to ensure my needs were met and my questions answered. In his capable hands, what initially seemed daunting became manageable, and what was obscure became clear. Oscar’s assistance was not just helpful—it was a testament to the invaluable impact of human connection and expertise in guiding others towards resolution and peace of mind.

Auto Billing nightmare

Used this company once for some legal forms and they keep debiting my bank account for services never authorized. Billing NIGHTMARE....do not recommend.

We apologize for any confusion and experience of unexpected charges, Greta. We’ll partner you with a member of our Executive Escalations Team. They will reach out to you and address your concerns with your existing subscription.

I'm in the process of setting up my non profit status 501c3. I needed to discuss the status and other services they offered me. I wasn't ready for the compliance package subscription, so we agreed that I can take that up in the future when we are officially registered. I appreciate they are proactive and as a company upsell services, however what I was impressed with most was not the sell, more the service aspect. For anyone new to non profits, ensuring one's status is not only current, yet in good standing , legal zoom offers great ongoing support and team of experienced professionals.

has a great personality and someday i hope to sit down and have lunch with him

When dealing with my agent she was professional and knowledgeable and had a lot of patience

I had a really hard time trying to do this over the phone with the computer. Once I got on the phone with my agent. She made my experience. Great Gina was really patient knowledgeable and she answered all my questions and even gave me her phone number. And extension saying, once the business is registered if I have any problems to give her a call. You've see that in business today. Once they got your money, you go down the road. She represented the company in a professional manner and because of her. I am a loyal customer.

Date of experience : May 12, 2024

We love to hear feedback like this, Al. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with Gina.

Unsettlingly overpriced fees

Their app is well designed and the process to get everything done is easy. But their fees are far too high compared to small independent businesses who offer the same services. I really put my trust in LegalZoom to not rip me off (wasn't that kind of the promise of these new software companies?), but you can get the same outcomes for 1/3 the price elsewhere.

Date of experience : April 19, 2024

We regret any inconvenience you may have experienced, Barton. We attempted to reach out to gather more information to assist you with this matter, but have not heard from you. If we can be of any support, please call us at (800) 773-0888, or visit https://linktr.ee/legalzoom.

The Best Crime Novels of the Year (So Far)

Looking for some murder and mayhem (fictional, of course)? Here are the best crime novels of 2024 so far.

zoom books reviews

By Sarah Weinman

We chose the 10 best crime novels of 2023. See the complete list .

I like Scandinavian crime fiction — the darker, the better

Under the storm , by christoffer carlsson.

When the body of a young woman is discovered in an incinerated farmhouse, resolution was swift: It was murder, her boyfriend did it, case closed. But for the boyfriend’s nephew, Isak; the arresting officer, Vidar Jörgensson; and the entire community of Marbäck, closure is a myth about to be shattered — spectacularly.

Amazon | Local bookstores | Barnes & Noble | Apple

Give me a tense, high-stakes novel that will keep me up all night

Smoke kings , by jahmal mayfield.

Can there ever be restitution for the harm done to generations of Black people in America? Mayfield takes this question to a provocative extreme in this thriller, which follows four friends as they kidnap descendants of people who long ago committed racially motivated hate crimes.

I want a historical mystery drenched in atmosphere

Rough trade , by katrina carrasco.

This is Carrasco’s second historical thriller to feature Alma Rosales, the gutsy, Pinkerton-trained opium smuggler who loves nothing more than a good brawl. The novel brims with the sights, smells and sounds of Tacoma, Wash., in 1888, full of docks, taverns and illicit back rooms where all manner of appetites are explored discreetly, where secrets swirl and betrayals come quickly.

Sure, plot’s great — but I’m more interested in character-driven stories

The hunter , by tana french.

In her follow-up to her 2020 book “ The Searcher ,” French continues to explore the dynamics of the Irish village where a retired Chicago detective, Cal Hooper, has moved. He is mentoring a local teen, Trey Reddy, when Trey’s long-disappeared father reappears, trailing a get-rich-quick scheme involving hidden gold and, inevitably, murder. French unspools her tale with patience, compassion and utter command.

I’d like a speculative Jazz Age noir

Cahokia jazz , by francis spufford.

Speculative histories have long been the terrain of Spufford’s fiction (and occasionally nonfiction). Here, he sets out to chronicle a vanished world that never had the chance to blossom, and marries it to the rhythms of hard-boiled detective fiction. Cahokia, in Spufford’s brilliant telling, is a thriving, Indigenous-led state roiling with racial tension. Then arrives the outsider detective Joe Barrow, investigating a murder that threatens to split Cahokia for good.

‘To & Fro’ is an ingenious puzzle of a novel

Leah Hager Cohen’s book follows two young girls, each in search of something she can’t quite define.

Leah Hager Cohen’s seventh novel, “ To & Fro ,” is a literary jewel with multiple facets. Its two storylines form a satisfying jigsaw puzzle of cleverly interlocking parts, yet these separate narratives, each following a young girl in search of something she can’t quite define, are also profoundly mysterious, charged with the conviction that many aspects of life cannot — and should not — be explained. Cohen sends both her protagonists on odysseys that lead not to conclusions but to “Two Beginnings and No End.”

That is the title of the exultant final chapter, printed in two columns at the center of this unusually formatted book. As Cohen describes it in an author’s note, it is “a volume whose twin parts are printed upside-down to each other, beginning at either end of the book to meet in the middle.” Readers may begin with either “To” or “Fro”; each opens with “An Invitation” that instructs them to “start here or flip it around.” The digital version of the novel allows readers to choose either portion by clicking a link, but its more conventional linear progression lacks the élan of the print edition. Reaching the final chapter at the book’s center, where two moving denouements share space side by side, is a unique experience that can’t be had in an e-book. This is a text you want to hold in your hands.

The format would simply be a gimmick if it weren’t underpinned by two compelling personal dramas. In “To,” Ani has lived for five years on the estate where she found refuge as a child, run by the enigmatic Captain as a “way station” for damaged people. After the Captain abruptly departs, citing his destination as “Away-From-Here,” she sets out to find him. Her first-person narrative mingles accounts of her encounters on the road and painful memories of her expulsion with her mother from her father’s house, her mother’s death and her guilt over abandoning the corpse. Invited several times to join groups of fellow travelers, she is driven onward by an impulse she cannot define. Throughout her voyage, Ani feels “a clear sense of being not alone. Of being accompanied.”

By contrast, Annamae in “Fro” feels desperately alone, despite being enfolded in a warm community that includes her preoccupied mother, lightly teasing brother and mildly annoying grandmother; a beloved babysitter who deserts her by getting married; and the benevolent Rav Harriet, spiritual guide and therapist rolled in one. But Annamae longs for a friend, a true friend who — as she tells her understandably bemused mother — may not live in this world or at this same time. At age 5, she writes to a “Fairy Man” asking him to “come and take me somewhere I need to go soon.” When her brother asks her where that is, she replies, “I haven’t decided yet.”

The Fairy Man, Annamae realizes when she’s older, was her childish way of saying ferryman — a key word in the intricate metaphorical web Cohen spins to envelop both girls. “Company” is the name Ani gives the kitten she impulsively takes along with her; it’s also the name Annamae gives the notebook she receives as a gift on her seventh birthday, in which she writes messages “to no one she’d met, but someone she felt — trusted — was intimately connected with her.” Ani carries with her a pair of the Captain’s glasses that she is told are “messenger glasses”; later, as she leaves one of her way stations, her host comments, “Getting a message, are you?” Both girls are drawn to mirrors and their reflections; in a game she played as a child, Ani imagined entering “the other side” of the mirror, while Annamae uses that phrase to describe “the world that’s just beyond … a realer world.”

These and other words, most notably “search” and “destination,” echo throughout the novel, linking Ani’s picaresque adventures in a dreamlike landscape to Annamae’s coming-of-age saga in a more realistic urban environment. No matter which story they start with, readers will quickly find that the second text enriches and clarifies the first: The book a group of scholars delve into at the “study house” Ani visits in “To” is identified in Annamae’s sessions with Rav Harriet in “Fro”; the yearning poem Annamae writes to an unknown friend in “Fro” turns into a song Ani hears during her wanderings in “To.” The point is not to provide clues the reader can use to solve the book as though it were a murder mystery, but to deepen our understanding of the unsolvable mystery that is our journey through life. Just as Ani realizes that “the Captain had never been my destination,” we see with her that it’s the search for meaning, the “being in motion,” that is crucial. Finding an answer is less important than the quest.

This is in essence a philosophical novel for adults, but by delicately portraying the uncertainties and struggles of two young girls, Cohen gives her story a powerful undercurrent of emotion, reminding us of the time in our lives when we asked big questions. Her perfectly calibrated prose is grounded for most of the book in the plain-spoken rhythms of everyday speech, so that the lyrical closing sections soar with the sense of new vistas opening up for the characters — and us. With its unconventional form and probing content, “To & Fro” invites rereading and deserves an honored place on the shelves of any serious fiction reader.

Wendy Smith is a two-time finalist for the National Book Critics Circle’s Excellence in Reviewing citation and the author of “Real Life Drama: The Group Theatre and America, 1931-1940.”

Booker's Game-Changer: Nike Book 1 Performance Review

With a subtle design, premium materials, and responsive cushioning, they offer exceptional support and grip for explosive movements and quick cuts. Comfort is paramount, comfortable feet during intense gameplay. Although it felt snug a bit, but it’s a killer on court once you broke it in after a few games. Definitely one of my prefered pair on court. ...

Book smooth

The outside is pure Book, with a workwear-inspired upper that adds durability, while a suede collar and leather across the forefoot provide more reinforcement and a plush, broken-in feel out of the box. The pull tab on the heel is inspired by a book spine, with numbers referencing chapters in an ongoing story.

Stop and go

A top-loaded Air Zoom unit in the heel provides a measure of responsive speed when taking off in the open floor and coming to sudden halts, like a two-footed Book jump stop and pump fake around the rim.

Plant and pivot

A tough plastic plate in the midfoot helps keep your foot stable when making sudden movements, like sharp plants, Book-like pivots and jabs in the post, and opportunistic cuts.

The multi-directional, herringbone-like pattern gives you sticky traction that's ideal for lateral cuts and quick changes in movement.

Full-go foam

The soft, responsive full-length foam can help you keep running and cutting in comfort.
