How to make money on Fiverr, according to 5 freelance writers

  • Fiverr is an online marketplace where freelancers can connect with clients.
  • Five writers described how they got started on Fiverr with no experience.
  • They detailed their strategies for promoting their work and securing clients.

Insider Today

Freelance writers can make money on Fiverr in numerous ways, such as writing short Amazon product descriptions or ghostwriting entire memoirs.

On their Fiverr profiles they showcase their "gigs" — the writing services they offer — and their rates. Prospective clients can book them for a job through the site.

Insider spoke with five freelance writers about how they use the platform to connect with clients. They described how they made up to $101,000 a month on the platform.

Rafael Meneses offered clients unlimited revisions and refunds

Meneses , 32, started freelance copywriting on Fiverr in 2019 to make some extra money alongside his university job. By April 2021 he found he was making more than his regular salary through Fiverr.

He looked at other copywriters' profiles to figure out how to differentiate himself. He said that to land clients as a new freelancer, he offered unlimited revisions and a money-back guarantee. He also said his first gig was still his most popular.

Alexa Nizam brought her personality to her Fiverr profile

Nizam set up an account to try out freelance copywriting on weekends and in the evenings alongside her video-production job in 2020. But she struggled to book any clients for months.

After watching a TikTok from another Fiverr seller, Alexandra Fasulo , she decided to use her photos in her gig images and described herself and what she offered in her bio section. She also set her prices low and took any job she could.

Within two weeks she'd landed her first clients. In March 2021, she made $8,000 from freelancing. The following month she quit her job to pursue copywriting full time.

Gaurav Shrishrimal showcased his portfolio on his Fiverr profile

Shrishrimal wrote Amazon product descriptions as a side hustle while working on his e-commerce business. He said he made $20,000 in revenue on Fiverr last year working two hours a day.

The 37-year-old used Fiverr to showcase his work, such as copy he'd written, and described his approach so clients would know what to expect.

Georgia Austin used keywords to improve her profile's SEO

Austin shared five strategies for building a profile on Fiverr and securing clients.

She decided to freelance on Fiverr after working full time as a copywriter for brands such as Sweaty Betty , a women's activewear store, and Nike.

The 26-year-old made her profile stand out by using professional headshots. She researched keywords to tag in her Fiverr gigs and to include in her title and description so they'd appear more frequently in client searches.

Austin made up to $27,000 a month in revenue working on her own, but she hired freelancers to help her meet client demand in 2021. They made $101,300, including tips from clients, in revenue in May 2022.

Billy McIntyre charged clients low rates for 3 years

McIntyre joined Fiverr in 2015 while working at an e-commerce warehouse. He used it to write pitches for brands, then he started ghostwriting memoirs, articles, and novels the following year.

McIntyre landed customers by charging $0.02 a word for his first three years on the platform and saying yes to any gig he was offered.

By 2018 he'd made ghostwriting his main gig and charged $3,000 to write 10,000 words.

Choosing the Right Gig

Choosing the Right Gig

When delving into the realm of freelance writing on platforms like Fiverr, it’s essential to navigate through the myriad of options available to find the perfect match for your project needs. Here, we discuss the key factors to consider when selecting the right gig to ensure a successful collaboration between clients and freelance writers.

Consider your project requirements

Before diving into the pool of available gigs on Fiverr, it’s crucial to outline your project requirements clearly. This initial step sets the foundation for a smooth hiring process and helps in finding the right freelance writer for the job. Some key points to consider include:

  • The type of writing needed: Whether it’s blog posts, articles, copywriting, or other forms of content, specifying the type of writing required is vital.
  • The desired word count or length: Communicate the exact word count or length of the content to ensure alignment with your expectations.
  • Your project’s deadline: Set a realistic deadline for the project and look for writers who can work within that timeframe.

Having these clear project requirements in mind will streamline the search process and lead you to the most suitable freelance writers on Fiverr. Discover our thoughts on Comprehensive Guide to Freelance Writing Services on Fiverr

Evaluate seller profiles

Once you have a clear understanding of your project needs, it’s time to dive into the profiles of potential sellers on Fiverr. Here are key aspects to pay attention to when evaluating seller profiles:

  • Writers’ experience and portfolios: Review the experience and portfolio of each writer to gauge their expertise in the type of writing you require.
  • Ratings and reviews from previous clients: Check the ratings and feedback left by previous clients to get an idea of the writer’s reliability and quality of work.
  • Communication skills displayed in their gig descriptions: Communication is key in any freelance collaboration. Look for writers who clearly communicate their services, process, and availability in their gig descriptions.

By thoroughly evaluating seller profiles based on these criteria, you can shortlist writers who align with your project requirements and quality standards.

Set a budget

Setting a budget is a crucial step in the freelance hiring process. Determine how much you are willing to invest in your project to narrow down the options and find writers within your budget range. While it’s important to consider the quality of work in relation to the budget, having a clear budget in mind will help streamline the selection process.

Negotiate and finalize

Once you have identified potential writers whose profiles align with your project needs and budget, don’t hesitate to engage in negotiations. Discuss the specifics of your project, including timelines, revisions, and any other relevant details to ensure a mutual understanding.

selecting the right freelance writing gig on Fiverr involves a strategic approach that considers project requirements, seller profiles, budget constraints, and effective communication. By following these guidelines, clients can engage with skilled writers to bring their projects to fruition successfully.

Managing Your Gig

Fiverr stands out as a hub for connecting individuals seeking services with talented freelancers offering a diverse range of skills. When engaging a freelancer on Fiverr, effective management of your gig is crucial to achieving the desired results. By following some essential steps, you can ensure a smooth collaboration and quality outcomes in your projects.

A. Communicate Effectively

Clear and efficient communication serves as the cornerstone of any successful collaboration. When working with a freelancer on Fiverr, it is essential to establish open channels of communication from the inception of the project. Whether through Fiverr’s messaging system, email, or other communication tools, maintaining a constant flow of information and feedback is vital. By conveying your expectations, preferences, and any changes promptly, you enable the freelancer to deliver work that aligns with your vision.

Furthermore, effective communication fosters a productive working relationship by ensuring that both parties are on the same page throughout the project. Clarifying project details, timelines, and any specific requirements helps prevent misunderstandings and minimizes the need for extensive revisions later on. Embrace transparency and clarity in your communication to create a conducive environment for collaboration on Fiverr.

B. Provide Clear Instructions

To set the stage for a successful collaboration, it is imperative to provide your chosen freelancer with clear and comprehensive instructions. Clearly outline the scope of work, project objectives, preferred writing style (if applicable), and any specific guidelines you wish the freelancer to follow. By offering detailed instructions upfront, you empower the freelancer to deliver results that are in line with your expectations.

Moreover, providing references, examples, or relevant materials can aid the freelancer in understanding your preferences and crafting content that resonates with your vision. Remember that freelancers on Fiverr come from diverse backgrounds and experiences, so guiding them through your specific requirements is vital for a successful outcome. Invest time in preparing a detailed project brief to facilitate a smooth and focused collaboration from the outset.

C. Review and Revise Drafts

As the project progresses, make it a practice to regularly review the drafts provided by the freelancer. Prompt feedback at this stage allows you to steer the direction of the work and address any concerns or deviations early on. Actively engage with the content, assess its alignment with your brief, and provide constructive feedback to guide the freelancer in refining their work.

approach the revision process as a dialogue aimed at enhancing the quality of the final deliverable. Respectful and specific feedback enables the freelancer to make targeted improvements and tailor the work to better meet your requirements. Remember, revisions are a natural part of the creative process, and embracing them cultivates a mutually beneficial exchange of ideas and feedback.

D. Finalize and Accept the Work

Upon receiving the final deliverable from the freelancer, take the time to evaluate it against the initial brief and your feedback during the revision process. If the work meets your expectations and aligns with the agreed-upon guidelines, proceed to accept the delivery. Acknowledging the completion of the project not only signals its closure but also allows you to provide valuable feedback to the freelancer.

Sharing your feedback, whether through Fiverr’s rating system or personal comments, enables the freelancer to refine their work further and enhances their profile on the platform. Appreciate the effort invested by the freelancer in bringing your project to fruition and offer constructive praise or suggestions for future collaborations. By finalizing the work with professionalism and clarity, you contribute to building a robust reputation for yourself and fostering enduring partnerships on Fiverr.

In essence, managing your gig effectively on Fiverr necessitates a blend of clear communication, structured guidance, active involvement in the revision process, and professional closure of projects. By embracing these principles and engaging with freelancers in a collaborative and respectful manner, you can harness the full potential of Fiverr’s platform for realizing your creative projects and business goals. Writing Jobs from Fiverr: A Guide to $50 Writing Gigs

Fiverr is a unique website based on a simple idea. You say what you’ll do for $5. Buyers then pay you to do just that. If you want a steady income from short writing jobs, it might be just what you’ve been looking for.

The surprise is that you can earn much more than $5 per task.

In fact, my biggest order has been $140. My average is $16.

Here’s how I do it.

By making a few changes, your Fiverr orders will go from $5 to $15 and even $50. And if you’re not already on Fiverr, these tips may convince you to start selling. (To learn more about Fiverr, read our previous guide. )

How I Made $140 with One Fiverr Gig

I started out by mostly writing bios in the 100–250 word range for $5 each. Along the way, I had a few clients tell me they had been unsatisfied with other Fiverr writers. These clients liked my work, so they left good feedback. This put me in a great place in terms of popularity, and soon I was taking on several Gigs at a time. However, I was still only making $5 per assignment.

So late last year, I decided to take a break from Fiverr to pursue other writing jobs. That didn’t last too long. Two months later, in need of a paycheck, I returned, but I did so with an adamant promise to propel my income. To start with, I took a look at what some Top–Rated Sellers were doing, and lo-and-behold, one seller held the answer.

I saw that the seller, Nystrele , also offered bio writing, but his approach was drastically different from mine. When I saw his page, I was stunned. His take on Fiverr opened my eyes and single–handedly helped my revenue skyrocket.

So what’s the secret?

For $5, Nystrele provides “a robust 2–3 sentence summary.” Instead of the whole meal for five bucks, he offers an appetizer. The good stuff is in the Gig Extras, where he charges up to $100 for longer bios. And even though tons of other sellers will write full bios for $5, Nystrele’s sales are flourishing, and he’s backed by a glowing 4.8 rating from over a thousand buyers.

That’s the kind of money I wanted to make, and I quickly changed my pricing structure. I now also offer a 2–3 sentence bio for $5, and my rate for a 250 word bio is $55. It’s a win-win all around––I get a bigger slice of the pie, and the clients I work with tend to be more serious. This simple strategy was solely responsible for a massive spike in my income, and since then, Fiverr has become a trustworthy stream of revenue for me.

And here’s the best news of all: You can do the same thing.

How You Can Be a Fiverr Champion

Fiverr’s platform for sellers is arranged so that the basic $5 Gig appears to be the most important thing. However, if you want to get the most out of Fiverr, you need to think the other way around.

The big secret lies in Gig Extras, the add-ons that you can offer to complement your Gigs. Fiverr markets them as just that: add-ons. However, Gig Extras are the secret weapon to making real money on Fiverr. They should be called Gig Necessities, as they’re anything but extras.

I’ll walk you through one of my own Gigs so you can get a feel for the finer details of this pricing method. One of my most popular Gigs is called “I will write original website content for you.” After I pitch myself to the client in the Gig description, I explain the prices. $5 will get them an outline with ideas and terms specific to their area of work. When they need more––and they almost always do––they take a look at my Gig Extras. Here’s a breakdown of my Extras for that Gig:

– $10: Thorough research of an agreed–upon topic

– $20: Write up to 100 words of original content

– $50: Write up to 250 words of original content

That’s what my clients are often looking for, and nine times out of ten, they’re more than happy to pay for it. I treat my $5 Gig as a brief consultation, so the $20 price range is where the work really starts. I do offer a $10 Extra that looks like a good deal, but it won’t do much good unless the client purchases the $20 or $50 service. Everything on my page is geared toward making at least $25 (basic Gig order of $5 plus a minimum $20 extra). Without even knowing so, the client is being persuaded.

The Appearance of Choice

You can easily modify this pricing structure to suit your niche. Maybe you specialize in writing product copy. For $5, you could provide a two-sentence description of the client’s product. If they need more than that––and they almost always do––they can look at your Gig Extras, where a 100-word description costs, say, $25.

The key here is to give the client the appearance of choice while implicitly guiding them to a minimum amount, as I do on my page by offering an Extra that’s no good with the basic $5 gig. For the Extra to really produce results, the client needs to purchase more.

In the same way, you should gear everything on your Gig page to a specific financial goal. One way is to use the Extra technique I described. Another way is to use comparative pricing. Say the client sees these two Extras on your page:

– I will write 75 words of ad copy for you ($20)

– I will write 100 words of SEO optimized ad copy ($30)

The client is much more likely to choose the second Extra. It’s a nice, round number (100 looks a whole lot bigger than 75 on paper), the ad copy is SEO optimized, and it’s only $10 more. This subtly persuades your client to invest at least $35 in your services.

And that’s the big secret to making the most of Fiverr. By placing the real work in the Extras and directing attention toward them, your average Gig sale will rise far above five bucks.

Start Low, Aim High

To guarantee results, I recommend starting with lower prices. This was a vital precursor to my Fiverr success and helped build my brand. Of course, you can skip this step if you see fit, but clients might be a bit hesitant to purchase a $50 Gig from a seller with only a few reviews.

As I mentioned, I started out by selling lots of $5 Gigs, and the reviews I got from those Gigs helped build my reputation. That’s one reason my clients are so willing to pay premium prices for something they can get for $5 elsewhere. They see that others have confirmed my quality, and that helps them decide to invest in my services.

Even though it doesn’t pay off immediately, it might be better in the long run if you start by pricing your services on the lower end. $10 for a 100–word biography might not seem like a lot, but after you complete several of those Gigs, you can raise your prices and have great reviews to back you up. The good feedback you receive early on will communicate quality to future clients who will pay good money.

No matter where you start, you can use this strategy to turn Fiverr into a serious source of income. If you’re not currently on Fiverr, I would recommend trying it out for a little. Though you do have to wait 2 weeks after a Gig to get paid, in some cases it’s well worth it. Whether you’re new to the site or a veteran seller, by using the pricing technique I’ve described, you will not only make more money than other sellers, but also have a rhetorical advantage over your competition.

Where to Promote Your Online Writing Jobs

There is no shortage of freelance writers out there, but finding the right one for your particular project can often be a challenge. For the uninitiated, the process of figuring how to promote your job opportunity can be a time-consuming, stumbling block. First, you post your job somewhere, then you cross your fingers and hope that enough qualified applicants come across your writing gig. If not, then you are back to square one trying to figure out how to attract top talent. To help you get your job in front of the right group of freelance writers, below you will find a handy list of all the different ways you can promote your online writing jobs.

Local Classifieds

Local classifieds, whether in print or online, are often the first stop for firms looking to take on a freelance writer. This is usually not the best route. Firstly, you are limiting your exposure to a single geographic area when you could expand your search across the country or even the world. Secondly, most experienced writers aren't checking Craigslist for freelance work with so many other platforms and methods for finding reliable work. Even if you want to keep it local or hire a writer in a specific market, there are better places to post your freelance gig. However, this is an option if you're looking to increase awareness wherever you can.

Online job boards provide an excellent way to get your writing opportunity seen by the best writers in the game. However, there are many job boards out there. Posting your job to every single one is not only time-consuming and costly, but it also yields a mountain of candidates to dig through. For the best results, zero-in on one to three job boards where you will post your job .

Social Media

If you or the company you work for has a large following on social media, posting that you have a writing gig available is not a bad idea—not to mention free. Twitter is arguably the best social media platform for posting about your job, considering that 25% of verified accounts are owned by journalists or media outlets. Be sure to add any relevant hashtags to your post to increase visibility. Also, don't forget to add any links or contact info for applicants to follow for additional information about the job.

Your Own Website

Do you have a jobs or career section on your website? Sometimes the best place to post your gig is on your own website alongside other open positions you may have. Plus, you can use your website to write a longer description of your writing project than you can on social media. Link your social media post to the job description on your website and you're all set! You can even run some paid ads on Facebook, LinkedIn or Google to increase awareness.

You might already have the perfect freelance writer in your personal network. Ask other professionals you know and ask them if they would recommend someone.Go to a local writers meetup or conference and scout for freelancers that way. Whether you get a referral from someone you trust or forge a new relationship with a writer that you meet at an event, networking is a great shortcut for finding a writer in a pinch.

Cold Contacting

Instead of having the writers come to you, go directly to them. This approach is best suited if you need a writer with a very specific niche. Search the web for writers that specialize in what you need and contact them directly with your job. You can spend some time crafting cold emails to help lend some insight into the job and invite them to schedule a call or meeting with you if they're interested.

Get More Freelance Writing Jobs by Going Above & Beyond

  • By MADDY OSMAN
  • November 25, 2020

You could deliver a bare-bones article that you’ve rushed through to make a deadline, but there’s so much more to being a truly great freelance writer. If you know your name is going to be attached to a piece, that should give you additional motivation to help a client’s article get found and shared. Think of giving your very best with freelance writing as an inbound marketing tactic to attract potential new clients, while you’re getting paid to create it! Here’s how to get more freelance writing jobs by going above and beyond for your clients.

Develop Topics

You probably will have to do this most of the time anyways, but why not position it as a perk of working with you? Many people hire for freelance writing jobs because they are at a loss when it comes to content marketing, especially with regards to what their audience actually wants to read. It’s at this point that you should also give some insight into your process for working with clients. For example, I use Trello as an editorial calendar for my clients, and I walk them through how we can both submit and agree upon topics, and how the client can then check in on them as they’re in progress or published. Basically, clients like to be reassured of their decision to hire you, and taking the time to talk about topic development sounds like you have it together.

Source Images

At the bare minimum, you should offer a feature image possibility or two for each article you write (assuming the client doesn’t have a team in place for graphic design). Just make sure that the images you choose are legal to use, and include proper attribution, so that you and the client don’t get in any legal trouble! The following free stock photo websites can be a good place to start your search for each article:

If you’re really trying to impress a client, consider hiring someone to create an infographic, or collaborate with their graphic designer to make it happen. Make sure that your fee reflects this additional effort.

(Occasionally) Increase Word Count

Occasionally, write more than what’s really required. But don’t embellish or use filler words: this should be 100 percent about quality. Think of this as a way to surprise and delight clients, but not as a requirement.

Provide an Outline Before Writing

This will probably only help you get more freelance writing jobs if you’re dealing with clients who like to be very involved in the content marketing efforts they otherwise delegate out. But even if they don’t ask for it, providing an outline can be a good way to show that you’re on the right track before getting in too deep with an article, by nipping any wasted effort in the bud. Make sure you present the outline as an editable document so that the client can add in their own two cents (Google Docs is good for this).

Include Onsite SEO Factors

SEO is the name of the game when it comes to content marketing, so the best way to get more freelance writing jobs (and charge more for them!) is to educate yourself about content SEO/onsite SEO factors, then make sure each post includes these important pieces:

  • Keyword research : Use a tool like Google Keyword Planner (free) to research keyword possibilities for articles, including traffic and competition levels. Additionally, consider what you know about the buyer’s journey, and how to optimize for keyword intent .
  • At least 2 internal links from the client’s website, and 2 outbound links to high quality sources (per 500-1000 words).

A plugin like Yoast allows you to designate a keyword and make sure you’re using it everywhere it needs to be for ranking purposes, as well as help you apply additional  onsite SEO best practices .

Conversion Factor (aka, a Call to Action)

The ultimate goal of content marketing is to get visitors to convert in some way. Although the highest goal is to create a sale, other conversions that help build a relationship are also desirable. Make sure that you don’t end a post without telling people what to do next. A few ideas if you’re stuck:

  • Tweet your thoughts at @CompanyTwitterHandle…
  • Get in touch here…
  • Sign up for the email list…

Another way to create a useful conversion factor is by creating Click to Tweet takeaways for especially good statistics or quotes throughout the article (if the client uses WordPress).

Create a Content Upgrade

A content upgrade is a conversion factor that encourages readers to take the next step with a company by creating a compelling reason to sign up for their email newsletter. A content upgrade can take the form of a super simple checklist, ebook, or printable document based on the article’s topic.

Create Preview Text

You’ll consistently get more freelance writing jobs by helping your clients think through every possible element required in a finished post. One often forgotten but incredibly important piece is these various types of preview text, pre-written with your finished article:

  • Meta description : 160 characters or less, a teaser to search engine visitors.
  • Email teaser : ~100 words or so, helping the client tease a new blog post to their email subscribers.
  • Social media copy : Teaser text for social sharing, with call outs for handles of any companies/individuals mentioned in the article to encourage sharing.
  • Headline options : Sometimes one is not enough. Some clients like to see different possibilities. Consider adding a few headline options based on the SEO keywords you’ve identified.

Upload Post to Their CMS

This feature is especially useful for a client who wants to be completely hands off when it comes to managing their blog/website and content marketing efforts. It’s reassuring for potential clients to hear that you’re a whiz with WordPress, so show them that you’re the whole package when pitching new freelance writing jobs. If you’re especially handy with navigating a CMS like WordPress, you can also use this opportunity to pitch a couple of hours of web work as a retainer to help them out with updates. Upsell is a beautiful thing!

Conduct Interviews

Some clients have the material, they just don’t know how to translate it to written content. Offering to facilitate and “translate” interviews into a final piece of content will be very useful for some clients—just make sure you’re charging for the time it takes to coordinate and execute the interview.

Share the Article with Your Social Followers

You’ll only get more freelance writing jobs by pitching this if you have a relevant social audience to complement the client’s brand and industry. If you do , make sure your potential clients know about it. Give numbers regarding followers and other statistics relating to sharing numbers with your pitches.

Be a Good Communicator

This means always keeping the client in the loop. It also means letting an editor know if you’re going to be late in turning in an article—at least a day before it would be due (and never the day of). You’ll get even more freelance writing jobs by never turning in an article late. Remember, your reputation precedes you.

Ghostwriting

Some clients will ask you to create content without a byline. This can be a great opportunity, but you should certainly charge extra for others to take credit for your writing.

Get More Freelance Writing Jobs

Go above and beyond by adding some of these different pieces that are within your wheelhouse, and that you can provide with confidence. Then, make sure every client and potential client knows how capable you are by sharing your process on your services page. If you need an idea of where to start, here’s mine . By offering so much value, it will be easy to justify paying you accordingly. What are your tips for getting more freelance writing jobs by going above and beyond? Share your insights in the comments so that we can raise the bar for freelance writers everywhere!

Elektrostal , city, Moscow oblast (province), western Russia . It lies 36 miles (58 km) east of Moscow city. The name, meaning “electric steel,” derives from the high-quality-steel industry established there soon after the October Revolution in 1917. During World War II , parts of the heavy-machine-building industry were relocated there from Ukraine, and Elektrostal is now a centre for the production of metallurgical equipment. Pop. • Will services make the world rich?

American fried chicken can now be served from the Philippines

Illustration of a globe with lots of red arrows going around it

Your browser does not support the <audio> element.

I n April a New York fried-chicken shop went viral. It was not the food at Sansan Chicken East Village that captured the world’s imagination, but the service. Diners found an assistant from the Philippines running the till via video link.

The service is provided by Happy Cashier, which connects American firms with Filipino workers. Chi Zhang set up the business after his restaurant failed during the covid-19 pandemic. He says that overseas workers also answer phone calls and monitor security-camera footage—doing so at a fraction of the cost of locals.

Virtual cashiers are a visible part of a much bigger trend: the rise of service exports from the developing world. Exports of goods are familiar. Factories churn out widgets, which are shipped to customers around the world. Yet improved international connectivity has made various kinds of outsourcing and digital commerce much easier. As a result, service exports have jumped by 60% over the past decade, reaching $7.9trn (7.5% of global GDP ) in 2023. The market for physical merchandise is even bigger, at $24trn, but has grown far more slowly, staying flat as a share of GDP .

What does this mean for countries hoping to get rich? Speaking in 2005 Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore’s first prime minister, observed that, “since the industrial revolution, no country has become a major economy without becoming an industrial power.” But since 2005, the world has changed. Manufacturing is now more capital-intensive, making it easier for China to retain its role as the world’s factory. In the past few years, Western countries have embraced industrial policy and protectionism in an attempt to boost domestic manufacturing. Policymakers in emerging markets are arguing about how best to respond.

At present, services are mostly exported by rich countries, where white-collar professionals often work across borders. Although China surpassed America as an exporter of goods in 2009, Uncle Sam still exports two-and-a-half times more services than his rival. Britain, which has fallen to 14th place in the global rankings when it comes to goods exports, remains the world’s second-largest services exporter.

article writing jobs on fiverr

But developing economies are starting to make a mark in the more advanced types of services that can be sold overseas. Many countries export audiovisual, computer and telecommunication services. In Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Moldova, Romania and Ukraine these run to more than 3% of GDP . India is the best-performing Asian country in this category; its exports fall just short of 3% of GDP . In an economy of India’s size, that means a sizeable industry. The country’s five largest IT firms have a joint market capitalisation of nearly $350bn. It is also home to 1,600 global capability centres—technology and research centres for multinational firms—that employ 3m people. All told, India’s service exports account for nearly 5% of the world’s, up from 3% a decade ago.

The less techy category of “business and trade-related services”, which covers things such as accounting and human resources, is another area of growth. Estonia and the Philippines top the table here, with such exports accounting for over 5% of their GDP . Like India, the latter offers low labour costs, as well as a large English-speaking population. In many countries workers also take casual gigs online. These are hard to measure, but two-thirds of the freelancers on English-speaking platforms such as Upwork and Fiverr are based in emerging economies.

The barnet formula

Then there is tourism. Not every country can replicate Japan’s temples or Mexico’s beaches, but many are finding ways to entice visitors, such as with medical services. Dentistry, hip replacements and hair transplants are among the treatments on offer. Costa Rica, Croatia and Moldova export health services worth between 0.2% and 0.5% of their economic output. Armenia and Jordan manage 1% each. A few hours in Istanbul airport provides a display of the thriving industry, as men return home with their heads wrapped in plastic, fresh hair taking root underneath.

article writing jobs on fiverr

In the short term, it seems likely that service exports will keep growing. In 1992 Stan Shih, founder of Acer, a Taiwanese computer-maker, coined the term “smile curve” to describe how value added in the manufacturing process was rising faster in the first and third parts of making a product (design and distribution, respectively) than in the second stage (manufacturing). As manufacturing has become more competitive, the smile has deepened. Think of Apple, which designs and distributes iPhones, and collects the rents from its brand, but produces none of the devices itself. Its market capitalisation is more than $3trn, whereas Foxconn, which makes 70% of the firm’s iPhones, is worth just $91bn. Even more cheerful is the fact that the rise of remote work has made firms far more comfortable with outsourcing operations. After all, a remote employee is not that different from an outsourced one.

But will service exports raise living standards in the manner of manufacturing? As Dani Rodrik of Harvard University notes, industry has historically possessed advantages in three areas: it is more technologically intensive, produces internationally tradable goods and creates lots of jobs. Although services is closing the gap in the first two areas, manufacturing still offers more employment.

Start with technological growth. A factory in a poor country brings man and machine together, placing an unskilled worker at the tech frontier. Then, as the tech improves, the worker becomes still more productive. Tradable services cannot absorb unskilled workers in this manner. Yet as the World Bank has observed, since the 1990s labour-productivity growth in emerging economies outside of East Asia has risen at roughly the same rate in services as manufacturing—and services productivity has grown faster in emerging economies than rich ones. Moreover, artificial intelligence may soon provide service workers with another lift. Two experiments have found that AI tools help the least skilled knowledge workers catch up with more skilled ones when writing marketing copy and providing customer service.

Services are also closing the gap with manufacturing when it comes to tradability, albeit slowly. Before the internet, the ability to send products overseas was the main way in which goods differed from services. Trade allows exporters to reach much larger pools of demand and achieve economies of scale that would otherwise have been beyond them. Because goods trade has been stagnant as a share of global GDP since 2010, it has become more difficult for newcomers to compete. Services trade is booming, and thus more welcoming. But even at the growth rate of the past decade, it will take 15 years to reach half the value of trade in manufactured goods.

Job creation is an even thornier issue. Marc Lautier of the University of Rennes has calculated that, despite automation, the number of manufacturing jobs in 160 countries for which he has data has remained stable since 1991, accounting for 14% or so of total employment. The problem is that it has become more difficult for governments to attract these jobs. Manufacturing is not moving away from East Asian powerhouses at the same pace as it moved to them in the late 20th century, in part because modern factories require more capital and skill to build. Our analysis of labour-market data from 51 mostly emerging markets finds that only five—China, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Turkey and Vietnam—have 18% or more of their population employed in manufacturing, compared with 16 in 1990.

article writing jobs on fiverr

Growth in services offers only some consolation, because services do not tend to provide labour density. The World Bank notes that, since 1990, service jobs have risen from 40% to 50% of global employment, as workers left agriculture. But just 5-10% of emerging-market service jobs are in tradable, techy industries, compared with 15-20% in rich countries. India’s IT industry may garner $250bn in annual exports, worth nearly 8% of national GDP , which is on a par with manufactured exports. Yet it employs less than 10m people from a working-age population of around 1bn.

In the longer run, AI might cause problems. Models are best at well-defined tasks that do not need in-person context. That makes business services vulnerable. A report by Capital Economics, a consultancy, argues that AI could lead to the “slow demise” of India’s service exports, cutting growth by 0.3-0.4 percentage points a year over the next decade. The spread of communication tech has facilitated services outsourcing. Fresh technological change could, in time, be its undoing.

Despite the downsides of a services-oriented approach to development, especially when it comes to providing decent jobs in large numbers, developing economies simply have fewer choices today than they once did. Governments that want to boost growth will therefore have to focus on different things. Whereas they once had reason to ensure that workers could easily move from farms to factories, today they would be better off paying attention to human capital among future white-collar workers. Richard Baldwin of IMD Business School says that large, well-functioning cities will take on greater importance, too, because services often depend on agglomeration. Getting services right, especially those which can be sold overseas, is now a crucial condition for growth.  ■

‘House of the Dragon’ Season 2, Episode 3 Recap: Let’s Talk

Rhaenyra acts on a risky hope that cooler heads might prevail. But are there really any cool heads left?

A stern-faced woman with white-blonde hair and wrapped in a black cloak stands beside a large iron door, glaring toward the distance.

By Sean T. Collins

Season 2, Episode 3: ‘The Burning Mill’

“We read fantasy to find the colors again, I think,” George R.R. Martin wrote in his short 1996 essay “On Fantasy.” “To taste strong spices and hear the songs the sirens sang.” By that standard, this week’s episode of “House of the Dragon,” a series based on Martin’s book “Fire and Blood,” is spicy fantasy indeed.

I don’t just mean the sex and nudity, though what there was of both blew my hair back on my head. For Martin, fantasy is about more than ribaldry. Describing it as a genre of “silver and scarlet, indigo and azure, obsidian veined with gold and lapis lazuli,” he goes on to write of how its very largeness, the unbounded scope of its imagination, “speaks to something deep within us.” This episode certainly spoke to something deep within this critic.

Crumbling gothic castles and grotesque charnel-house battlefields, nightmares of murder and desperate pleas for peace, breakneck dragon chases and it-was-all-a-big-misunderstandings — this week offered the kind of maximalist storytelling that felt both over-the-top and vital. (Indeed it’s hard to have great TV without at least a smidgen of the outlandish.) From a story perspective, the episode’s biggest moment arrived right near the end. The brewing war between the Blacks and the Greens over the Iron Throne comes down to the wishes of one dead man, King Viserys. For years, he proclaimed his daughter, Rhaenyra, to be his heir to all and sundry. But on the night it most counted, the night of his death, he told his wife, Queen Alicent, that his eldest son, Aegon, must be the one to unite the realm — “The Prince That Was Promised,” as Viserys called the callow lad.

Or so it seemed to Alicent. We in the audience knew that when he mentioned the name Aegon, he was referring to his prophetic ancestor, Aegon the Conqueror, and to Aegon’s vision of an apocalyptic battle against the darkness, as depicted in the final season of “Game of Thrones.”

Did Alicent truly believe that Viserys was talking about their son? Or was that merely what she wished to believe? (As important, should a drama hinge its central conflict on the kind of verbal mix-up better suited to a sitcom? Answering that is, at this advanced stage, perhaps beyond the scope of this recap.)

The daring stealth mission in which Rhaenyra sneaks back into King’s Landing (with Mysaria’s help) to force a one-on-one meeting with her frenemy of frenemies clears all this up. Alicent really believes Viserys wanted Aegon. For her part, Rhaenyra really believes Alicent really believes it. But once the dowager queen mentions the Conqueror’s “Song of Ice and Fire,” Rhaenyra figures out what went wrong and offers a clarification … which Alicent refuses to heed, although she seems to knows in her heart that it is true.
