Just over a year later, on October 3, 2023, they announced that audiobooks would become part of the Spotify Premium package . This made Spotify a one-stop destination for just about all listening needs: music, podcasts , and now audiobooks.

But is it worth it? Let’s find out. If you have decided it is, in fact, worth it, but you’re struggling to figure out how to actually make a purchase or listen to an audiobook on Spotify Premium, let’s go over that too.

A note: Spotify audiobooks are only available in little more than a handful of countries, so check that yours is one of them before continuing.

How to Buy an Audiobook on Spotify

The first step is making sure that you’re on the web application, as you can’t buy on your phone app just yet. Go to the Search icon, then to the Audiobooks tab. You have almost 400,000 titles to choose from: once you’ve settled on one, click Play and select the Get email option.

After this, go to your inbox and look for the email that Spotify sent you. Click on Buy audiobook, and you’ll be redirected to the book page. Then choose Buy, follow the checkout process, and voilá! You have an audiobook.

While you can only buy a book on the web app, you can listen on any device. In order to ensure that you have access to it even offline, go to Your Library, click on the Audiobooks tab, and download your book.

Audiobooks on Spotify Premium

As of the October 2023 announcement, Premium users in the UK and Australia were allowed 15 hours of audiobook listening every month, with U.S. users joining later in the year. They were given access to a catalog of (as of now) 200,000 titles.

But how do you listen to an audiobook on Premium? Go to the catalog and look for audiobooks marked “included in Premium.” Hit play on the first chapter, and you’re good to go.

Search and Discoverability

You can find an audiobook by author or title by typing it into Search just like you would for a song or podcast. Selections are also curated for you much in the way Spotify’s music is, with groupings by genre, author, mood, activity, and more. Some examples below:

screenshot of genre categories in Spotify Audiobooks on the web app

Pros and Cons

Let’s start with the cons: first of all, it’s regionally limited. Barely more than a handful of countries have access to audiobooks on Spotify. If you’re not in the U.S., Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand, you’ll have to stick to Audible, Everand, and a few other platforms for your audiobook needs.

The next issue is with Spotify Premium specifically: you only have 15 listening hours per month. This is a marked difference from Audible subscriptions, where you get a credit for a full book per month, regardless of how long that book is, as well as a ton of available audiobooks to borrow. If you’re into 19th-century classics (or George R. R. Martin), you know that 15 hours just isn’t going to cut it. For context, the audiobook of A Game of Thrones is a whopping 33 hours and 46 minutes long.

Another possible con to consider if you’re thinking of going with the Premium subscription solely for audiobooks is that not all premium accounts have access to this feature. Spotify Family and Spotify Duo plans only grant access to the plan manager, and those are limited to 10 hours a month. If you have an individual account, however, you can access 15 hours of audiobooks per month. But, in the pro column, you do have the option to purchase a 10-hour top-up.

And then there’s the issue that was, admittedly, my first concern when Spotify got into audiobooks: what it’s going to mean for authors. According to the British Union Society of Authors, authors and agents weren’t consulted on license or payment terms before publishers struck deals with Spotify . And since it’s a well-publicized fact that streaming sites have harmed artists , this gives me the biggest pause. Johnny Geller, an agent at Curtis Brown Literary Agency, said, “ We do not want to follow the disastrous path the music industry went down .”

There are, of course, pros, too! If you have an individual Spotify Premium account in one of the aforementioned countries, you don’t have to tie yourself to any one book that you don’t know for sure you’ll love. You can try different audiobooks until you find the one that works for you.

As mentioned previously, you have the option to add more listening hours if the 15 included with your Premium subscription aren’t enough.

Another pro: the selection for Spotify Premium appears to be a good one, with 70 percent of its catalog comprised of bestselling titles .

There is also the convenience of having access to music, podcasts, and audiobooks all in a single app. If you listen to a lot of music and podcasts and up to a couple of audiobooks of average length a month, then you’re getting a lot for the price of your subscription.

So, Is It Worth It?

This will ultimately depend on the person. Hopefully, with the information above, you can make a choice that works for you. Happy listening!

Spotify finally got audiobooks — where to find them and how to listen

Audiobooks are now available on Spotify Premium (with caveats)

Spotify mobile app with Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2

Ever wondered why you couldn't listen to audiobooks on Spotify ? Me too! That's where all my other audio content sits — my music and my podcasts — so why not lump in audiobooks so I can listen to everything in one place?

Well, you can. Spotify now allows you to listen to a wide range of audiobooks through its mobile and desktop applications, so you can listen to your favorite books at home or on the move.

Personally, I think this is a positive move, as it stops me needing to flick between the Spotify and Audible apps when I want to change between a podcast and audiobook. However, there are some notable caveats that limit this feature's usage and mean listening to audiobooks on Spotify may not be as good as using a dedicated audiobook app.

Firstly, to access audiobooks on Spotify, you'll need to pay. You either need to purchase an audiobook through the Spotify web app, or you need a Premium subscription. Given many users will have a Spotify Premium sub, that likely won't be an issue.

Second, unless you buy an audiobook outright, even if you have a Premium sub, you'll only get 15 hours of audiobook listening a month. Personally, I think that's pretty stingy, given many audiobooks run way beyond that — so that's potentially less than one book a month. Until they increase the amount, I think I'll stick primarily to Audible and use Spotify for the odd audiobook here and there.

If you can limit your listening (you might want to learn how to enable a sleep timer so you don't sleep through your allowance) though, this could still be a useful feature. Besides, if you're already paying for Premium, you've not got 15 hours of audiobooks bundled in for free.

3. Hit Play

Hit Play to start listening. It's worth noting that there doesn't appear to be a countdown timer for the audiobook allowance you have left that month. Ration your listening carefully if you tend to binge audiobooks.

Today's NYT Connections Hints and Answer for July 1 (#386)

I switched from chrome to brave for the privacy features, here's how easy it was, the internet is not forever, so it's time to preserve what you can, quick links, audiobooks a la carte, how much do spotify audiobooks cost, how to buy audiobooks on spotify.

Spotify wants to be your one-stop for all your listening needs. It has music, podcasts , and most recently, audiobooks. The audiobook experience on Spotify is a bit different than you might expect. Let's take a look.

Audiobooks launched on Spotify in September 2022  with over 300,000 titles to choose from right out of the gate. The company's approach to audiobooks is intentionally different from what Amazon is doing with Audible.

Audible is geared to be a subscription-based audiobook platform, though you can purchase books individually. The $7.95 "Plus" plan and a $14.95 "Premium Plus" plans both give you unlimited access to audiobooks in the "Plus" catalog, but you still need to purchase "credits" for titles that aren't included.

Spotify's audiobooks are offered a la carte, meaning you only purchase what you want when you want it. There's no monthly subscription or catalog of audiobooks you can listen to for free, and there are no discounts for Premium subscribers . It's like walking into a book store and buying a book.

Related: How to Get the Most Out of Spotify Premium

Spotify is certainly not alone in the world of audiobooks. Besides Amazon's Audible, there's also Apple Books, Google Play, Audiobooks.com, and others to compete with. So how does Spotify stack up in pricing?

Let's compare the price of Stephen King's The Gunslinger across Spotify, Audible, Apple, Google, and Audiobooks.com. These prices are without any subscriptions.

  • Spotify : $15.49
  • Audible : $15.22
  • Apple : $14.99
  • Google : $14.95
  • Audiobooks.com : $19.99

Spotify's a la carte pricing is competitive with the other options on the market. In fact, Amazon dropped the price of The Gunslinger on Audible from $18 to $15.22 soon after the launch of Spotify Audiobooks.

Of course, things get a little murkier when we take subscriptions into consideration. For example, Audiobooks.com's subscription costs $14.95 and includes one free book per month. So if you're only reading one book per month, that knocks the price down below Spotify.

In general, you'll find Spotify's pricing is about the middle of the pack. You can certainly find better deals from other services, but there aren't huge price disparities.

Perhaps the strangest part of the audiobook experience on Spotify is how you purchase them. Audiobooks can only be purchased in a web browser, not in the mobile or desktop apps.

To browse audiobooks, go to the "Search" tab in the Spotify app and select the "Audiobooks" tile. You can also search for book titles just like song titles.

Audiobooks on Spotify.

Annoyingly, you can't view the price of audiobooks in Spotify's mobile apps. The play button has a lock icon on it, which will take you to a screen to request an email. The email includes the price and a link to purchase the audiobook. The price is visible in the desktop app, but it still takes you to a browser to make the purchase.

Spotify Audiobooks.

After you've made the purchase, the audiobook will appear in your library. Listening to the audiobook works like you would expect. You can play/pause, jump to chapters, adjust playback speed, set a sleep timer, sync progress across devices, give ratings, and download for offline listening.

That's the story on Spotify audiobooks. It's yet another service that offers audiobooks , and it may be appealing if you already listen to music and podcasts on Spotify. However, the a la carte pricing is probably not great if you go through a lot of audiobooks each month. Options are good to have.

There's more to Spotify than music

Spotify audiobooks graphic

As well as everything else you can listen to on Spotify, you can now also listen to audiobooks too: there's a huge library of books to work your way through, and they can be accessed right alongside your music and your podcasts in the same Spotify apps you've always used.

As with podcasts – added in 2015 – Spotify has worked hard to make the introduction of audiobooks as seamlessly as possible. You can browse through and search for audiobooks specifically and separately, and they're kept in their own section of your library once they've been bought and downloaded.

There are some familiar tools available when you start listening too. You can listen offline, save your place with bookmarks, and adjust the playback speed as you listen. What's more, Spotify Premium users now get a selection of free audiobooks included  in their subscription.

Here's everything you ever wanted to know about audiobooks on Spotify.

When did Spotify launch audiobooks?

Spotify audiobooks graphic

Audiobooks were added to Spotify for US users in September 2022. They were then made available in the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand in November 2022, and in Canada in March 2023. At the moment, Spotify audiobooks aren't available on the streaming service in any other regions.

According to Spotify , users had been requesting audiobooks for years, and 300,000 titles were made available at launch – within a year, that was up to 350,000 titles, so there's new content being added regularly. Spotify has also promised that more features and functions are coming in the future.

"We've been testing, researching, and listening to figure out how to create the most seamless experience on Spotify," said Nir Zicherman, Spotify's Vice President and Global Head of Audiobooks and Gated Content, as Spotify audiobooks launched.

"Our hope is that users who find audiobooks in their apps starting today feel that the user experience is obvious – that audiobooks fit in perfectly with how they already use Spotify."

How much do audiobooks on Spotify cost?

Spotify audiobooks

You'll find audiobooks across all kinds of price points on the Spotify platform, from free upwards, so you can pick and choose depending on your budget. Note that buying audiobooks works separately from a Spotify Premium subscription: audiobooks are one-off purchases handled separately, whether or not you pay Spotify a monthly subscription fee as well.

However, Premium members do get 15 hours worth of audiobooks for free each month . These books can be chosen from a large selection, though it's not the entire library. The offer is live now in the UK and Australia, and is coming to the US in the next month or two.

That puts Spotify on a more even footing with Amazon 's Audible, which includes audiobooks in its subscription fee (though with Audible, once you stop your subscription, you lose access to your content). Purchases are handled independently of any shared Family or Duo subscription, too – everyone's audiobook purchases are kept separate and aren't shared between users.

In terms of US currency, paid-for audiobooks start at just a few dollars and can go as high as $40 (that's roughly £32 / AU$62). Prices do fluctuate, though, with special deals coming and going – so if you've got your eye on a specific audiobook then we'd recommend waiting a few weeks to see if you can get it any cheaper.

How do you buy audiobooks on Spotify?

Spotify audiobooks

Open up the Spotify app on mobile, desktop, or the web, and you should see an Audiobooks link somewhere quite prominent (usually at the top) – it'll be alongside Music and Podcasts & Shows , so you can quickly get to the type of content you want.

You can also just use the search function as normal to look for audiobooks: you can search for specific titles or genres, and as you type out your search you'll see an Audiobooks filter button appear underneath that will narrow down your results.

The hundreds of thousands of audiobooks on Spotify cover all kinds of categories and genres, so you should be able to find plenty of titles that match your reading tastes. As you make purchases, you'll get recommendations from Spotify about what else to listen to.

Click or tap on an audiobook to see more information about it: a description, user reviews, how much it costs, the running time, and who narrates it. Audiobooks can be saved to your library too, even before you've purchased them.

Select Get or Buy to download an audiobook, and – if necessary – purchase it. Purchases are always handled on the web, so if you're in the desktop or mobile apps, you'll be redirected to a webpage so you can enter your payment details.

Once that's done, the title shows up in your library and it's ready to listen to. Any titles saved to your library that haven't yet been purchased will have a padlock icon next to them, which disappears when you actually buy the audiobook on Spotify.

When purchasing audiobooks, Spotify will default to any payment methods you've used before or that you use for your subscription, but you can change this if needed. You also get a confirmation email for every audiobook purchase you make.

Does Spotify offer any free audiobooks?

Spotify audiobooks

Right now, there's a small selection of free audiobooks on Spotify, so you can start listening without spending any money. It's also worth noting that every audiobook has a free preview you can listen to, available on the individual listings pages. You may well see a free audiobooks section on the home screen of the Spotify app, but if not you can search for "free audiobooks" as well.

As far as we can tell, based on lists of "best free Spotify audiobooks" that people have posted online, the selection of free audiobooks varies by country and varies over time too – it's a good idea to keep checking inside the Spotify apps or even searching for specific titles to see what's being offered free of charge.

The process of adding a free audiobook to your library is the same as when you purchase an audiobook on Spotify, only no payment details are required, and no money changes hands. The new title will be available in the audiobooks section of your library.

As we've mentioned, Spotify Premium users can access 15 hours' worth of 'free' audiobook content per month – though considering you're paying a monthly fee for Spotify, it's not exactly free.
