Tips to Land Writing Gigs on Freelance Websites

  • best freelance writing sites in 2023

As a freelance writer, finding the right platform to showcase your skills and connect with potential clients can be a daunting task. With so many options available, it’s important to know which sites are worth your time and effort.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to expand your client base, we’ve rounded up the 20 best freelance writing sites for serious writers. From job boards to content marketplaces, these platforms offer a range of opportunities for writers to find high-quality, paying gigs. So, grab your laptop and get ready to take your writing career to the next level!

Certain platforms will be easier than others to jump into and begin making money, as some are more competitive than others or have a more rigorous vetting process for freelancers. Here are some tips to help you land writing gigs as you get started:

  • Create a strong profile. Your profile is often the first thing potential clients will see, so make sure it showcases your skills and experience. Include a clear and concise bio, relevant writing samples, and any relevant certifications or education.
  • Be selective with the freelance jobs you apply for. It’s important to apply for gigs that align with your skills and interests. Don’t waste your time on low-paying or irrelevant jobs. Instead, focus on applying for gigs that you're qualified for and genuinely interested in.
  • Customize your proposals. Don't send the same generic proposal to every job. Take the time to read the job description and tailor your proposal to the specific project and client. Show that you’ve done your research and understand what the client needs.
  • Highlight your unique selling points. What sets you apart from other writers? Maybe you specialize in a specific niche, have extensive experience in a certain industry, or have won writing awards. Whatever it is, make sure to highlight it in your proposals and on your profile.
  • Follow up. Don't be afraid to follow up on proposals or applications. A polite email or message can show that you’re serious about the job and can help you stand out from other candidates.
  • Deliver quality work. Once you land a gig, make sure to deliver high-quality work that meets or exceeds the client’s expectations. This can lead to repeat business and positive reviews, which can help you land more gigs in the future.

By following these tips, you can increase your chances of landing high-quality writing gigs on the best freelance writing sites. Remember to stay patient and persistent, and don't be afraid to put yourself out there!

If you are having trouble knowing how to apply to freelance writing websites and how to come across as more experienced, so you can get paid higher.

I can recommend a super-duper freelance writing course I took, which helped me land 3 new clients in 3 weeks .

freelance-writing-courses-Elna-write-to-1k

I spent ages googling FREE information and googling articles (like you are doing now) and I needed to keep my costs down as I wasn’t being paid for my writing just yet.

But I got sick of reading conflicting or confusing information and took the freelance writing course .

It taught me how to pitch to new clients and come across as experienced. Just look at this review:

WriteTo1k-Write-Your-Way-to-Your-First-1k-Elna Cain review

I also learned how to set up a freelance writing website, where to find jobs, and what to charge.

Yes, you can make $1000 a month with online article writing.

There is a tonne of get-rich-quick programs on the internet that claim it’s simple to earn hundreds of thousands of dollars a year writing.

Despite the fact that a small number of extremely wealthy writers exist, what the internet fails to show is the work it takes to earn such an amount. A decent starting point that is both practical and doable is $1000 per month.

Earning $1000 per month demonstrates that you have gained significant proficiency in writing.

How To Write Articles For Beginners?

Master good research skills, focus on the content, have content ideas at hand, get rid of distractions.

Let’s face it, it is difficult to write an article that is both intriguing and interesting. Regardless of how some writers may portray it, to make a piece of article stand out, extensive research is required.

Extensive research requires time and effort.

There are numerous techniques to carry out research for articles. While some writers prefer to conduct their own research, others use keywords to discover information online.

Choosing whether to write a long-form piece or a series of shorter postings is the first step in guaranteeing that your article is thoroughly researched.

Longform articles demand more time researching and assembling information into a gripping story with a solid ending that is both educational and enjoyable.

However, bear in mind that it is simple to get caught up in the trap of doing too much research instead of typing the words out to form the article.

One of the things you could do during your research is to try and be as detailed as you can in your search keywords if you’re seeking data or statistics to back up your claim.

This way, you already have a goal for the type of content you would like to produce.

The process of writing articles for search engines like Google’s first page is known as SEO writing. This is accomplished by conducting keyword research on key terms and producing optimized content that addresses the user’s purpose.

For example, say you are searching on how to solo travel in Bangkok , the articles that pop up on the first page are articles that have been optimized to give you the exact results you are looking for.

You may ask – Aisha, why is it important for me to write content that appears on the first page?

According to a study , when an article is on the first page of a search engine, it has a much higher chance of being clicked and read compared to articles that are not

More than 28% of users who conduct searches click on the first link on the first page. The percentages decrease after that first outcome for each placement on the page.

Writing for SEO is crucial since it is an advertising strategy that works as long as your website does. Having an article that is on the first page means more views, and more views mean more advertising revenue.

As a freelancer, it is your job to deliver content that will bring in revenue to your clients. By having sufficient SEO knowledge, you can help them boost their ranking and increase their revenue.

You can browse through as many online writing sites as you want, but if there is one skill that can help you stand out amongst other writers, it is SEO knowledge. Here are some resources to help you get started.

  • SEO Success For Beginners

It is a typical assumption that excellent grammar and punctuation equate to outstanding writing. In actuality, the content is what matters most in good writing.

All the jobs posted on these article writing websites have one thing in common, it is to find a writer who can produce content that is interesting, entertaining, and educational.

You could get sidetracked from the writing process if you’re always looking for errors, and your thoughts might grow stagnant as a result.

You will also note that it is challenging to put out fresh content when your full attention is constantly on finding errors.

freelance writing websites

The appearance of writer’s block is unpredictable and let me tell you that it can be the most frustrating feeling in the world especially if you have deadlines to catch!

Keeping a list of topics for prospective news pieces or short articles that could be developed into long-form content is important for this reason. Write down ideas as soon as you have them in a notebook or Google Doc.

This way, once you have landed a job from any one of the freelance writing websites that pay , you can whip up content ideas to impress your client!

This may be a no-brainer but get rid of the distractions.

You did not spend your precious time scrolling through multiple content writing sites and landing a job only to fail at producing the articles because you are distracted.

Many states that multitasking helps them operate more effectively.  However, when writing a whole piece of article in a short period of time, you will need to be laser-focused to produce the best outcome.

Turn off the television and notifications of any social media account before you write your first line so that you can concentrate completely on producing the piece. I personally like the Pomodoro technique in staying focused, perhaps you can give that a shot too.

How Do You Increase Your Rate?

freelance writing websites

Want to increase your rate as a freelance writer?  Check the following tips:

1. Niche Down

To get the best paying freelance writing jobs, the best tactic is to upskill and niche down. For example, you can be an expert in a type of writing such as email writing or in a topic like SAAS.

By being an expert you will know the ins and outs of a topic.

So, your writing will be of better quality which your audience and clients will immediately notice and therefore be more valuable!

2. Go The Extra Mile!

By going the extra mile, your client will notice that you care for their business and value their success, this will make you a valuable asset for them and keep coming back for your writing services.

3. Writing Testimonials

Showing your writing clients testimonials on your website will increase your credibility and authority, this helps you demand a higher paying rate because clients see you are trustworthy.

4. Offer Free Photos

Speaking from personal experience, you can increase your rate by mentioning that you can include some free photos to accommodate the article.

You can source FREE images from these websites:

  • Gratisography
  • Offer SEO optimized articles

5. Offer SEO Services

Also, I recently learned about SEO, Search Engine Optimization.

I read some free articles and bought a book on it and straight away my rate increased when I went on freelance writing websites and said:

‘I can offer SEO optimized articles.’

This just means I can use a free keyword tool (Ubersuggest) to find good keywords and place them in the appropriate places in the article.

If you are looking for a list of best SEO practices to include in your article, get in touch and I will send it to you.

I use it every time I write SEO optimized articles for a client.

If you found this article useful, save it and pin it!

With AI writing so much code, should you still study computer science? This new data point provides an answer.

  • UC Berkeley sees a 48% jump in first-year applications to study computer science.
  • Despite generative AI advances, students are eager to pursue computer science careers.
  • Human developers remain essential for creating something new.

Insider Today

One of the most persistent concerns around generative AI is whether the technology will put workers out of a job. This idea has particularly caught on in the context of software coding .

Github Copilot can write a lot of code these days, so is it even worth studying computer science now? That's been a question on the minds of math-minded high schoolers since ChatGPT burst on the scene in 2022.

There's a new data point that helps answer at least part of this question: Students are still lining up in droves to take computer science in college.

An eye-popping data point

Let's take The University of California Berkeley as an example, as this college at or near the top for computer science.

First-year applications to UC Berkeley's College of Computing, Data Science, and Society CDSS increased 48% this year. There were 14,302 (non-transfer) applications for these CDSS majors in the Fall 2024 incoming class, versus 9,649 the previous year.

For context, the number of first-year applications to UC Berkeley as a whole didn't change much from a year earlier.

Related stories

This was announced last week by Professor Jennifer Chayes, the dean of Berkeley's College of CDSS. She popped these eye-popping stats during a fireside chat with Governor Gavin Newsom and Stanford Professor Fei-Fei Li at the at the Joint California Summit on Generative AI in San Francisco.

There's a role for human software developers

Afterwards, I got in touch with John DeNero, Computer Science Teaching Professor at UC Berkeley, to talk about this some more.

He's also chief scientist at Lilt , a generative AI startup, and he was previously a researcher at Google working on Google Translate , one of the first successful AI-powered consumer apps.

"Students express some concern that generative AI will affect the software engineering job market, especially for entry-level positions, but they are still excited about careers in computing," he wrote in an email to Business Insider. "I tell them that I think many of the challenging aspects of software development can't be performed reliably by generative AI at this point, and that I expect there will still be a central role for human software developers long into the future."

AI can't do new things very well

Generative AI is currently very good at replicating parts of software programs that have been written many times before, DeNero explained.

That includes computer science homework assignments! See BI's coverage on how much ChatGPT is used to cheat on homework .

What if you want to create something new? This is where smart human coders will still be needed. (This makes logical sense as AI models are trained on data. If that information doesn't exist yet or it's not part of the training dataset, the models often get in trouble).

Generative AI "requires a lot of thoughtful human intervention to produce something new, and all consequential software development projects involve quite a bit of novelty," DeNero said. "That's the hard and interesting part of computing that currently requires clever and well-trained people."

"Generative AI can speed up the more mundane parts of software development, and software developers tend to adopt efficiency tools quickly," he added.

What happens at Lilt?

This applies to what's happening at Lilt, which is building an AI platform for translators.

Google Translate first came out 18 years ago. And still, human linguists have jobs and are relied upon when translations are really important. For instance, you can use Google Translate to read a Japanese train timetable maybe, but would you use the app to translate your business's most important contract without having a human expert check it? Probably not.

"To reliably produce publication-quality translations, human expert linguists are still at the center of the process, but by using Lilt's task-specific generative AI models, those experts are much faster, more accurate, and more consistent," DeNero said. "As a result, more text gets translated at higher quality into more languages."

He expects this same pattern to play out in software development: A small team of highly trained human developers will have an even greater capacity to build useful high-quality software.

"And so, future Berkeley graduates will have plenty of opportunities to use their computing skills to improve the world," DeNero said. "Hopefully some more of them will come work for Lilt."

How James Patterson completed Michael Crichton's "Eruption"

By Tracy Smith

June 2, 2024 / 9:28 AM EDT / CBS News

If you ever want to feel a sense of awe, try standing near an erupting volcano. The late author Michael Crichton was fascinated with volcanoes for most of his life. And even now, 16 years after his death, among the countless books and papers at his office in Santa Monica you'll find stacks of volcano research.

For his widow, Sherri Alexander Crichton, it's almost as if he's still here. "I feel his energy around all the time," she said.

And in the mountain of papers he left behind, she found parts of an unfinished novel centered around a huge volcanic eruption. It struck Sherri as something he would've wanted to share – a posthumous blockbuster from someone who, in his relatively short life, gave the world so much, including genetically-recreated dinosaurs.

In the literary world, Michael Crichton was a colossus – the only writer to have a number one book, movie, and TV show in the same year. He was also a Harvard-educated doctor, a prolific genius who created scientific thrillers that brought millions along on heart-pounding rides, from big city emergency rooms in "ER," to the tornado-ravaged heartland in "Twister," to places that exist only in our dreams (and nightmares), like "Jurassic Park."

michael-and-sherri-crichton-1280.jpg

Sherri Crichton remembers him as someone who was incredibly fun, but at times distant. "I remember when I first started dating Michael, a very dear friend of mine said, 'Sherri, it's gonna go like this: It's gonna feel like he doesn't wanna have anything to do with you when he's writing. It's not gonna feel like he loves you anymore because he's gonna be into the book. And you're gonna have to be okay with that.' And I was like, 'Of course, of course I'll be OK.'

"But when it hit, like those first few times when he would really separate, he was present, but he actually was still in his creation, whatever that was," she said.

She admits it was a hard time: "And it took a lot of self-confidence to be able to say to myself, 'This is gonna be okay. Let's give it another month. Let's see what it's gonna be like.'"

They married in 2005, but three years later, Michael Crichton died of cancer at age 66, leaving Sherri alone, and six months pregnant with their son, John Michael.

As she picked up the pieces of her life, she discovered and read parts of the volcano book he'd been working on, a page-turner about a massive eruption in Hawaii worse than any in history.

It ended abruptly. "But I kept thinking, 'There has to be more,'" Sherri said.

And so, after more than a decade, she decided it was time to finish it. But then there was the question of who. "I just went big. I thought, 'What about James Patterson?'"

James Patterson is one of the most successful authors in history, who has sold around 400 million books, and collaborated with people like President Bill Clinton and Dolly Parton . Truth is, Patterson has a backlog of projects that keep him working every day. But when Sherri Crichton called, he answered. And Michael Crichton's story – about the explosive volcano and the fact that it threatened to crack open a stockpile of toxic waste so potent that it could destroy life on planet Earth – was too good for him to pass up.

But finishing the book was a tall order for both Patterson and Sherri Crichton.

She said she was apprehensive at first: "I was just nervous because it's a new relationship," Sherri said.

Patterson added, "And she lives in Hollywood, and people lie out here!"

"I have to say, I'm just fiercely protective of Michael's materials," she said.

And how did Patterson find Michael Crichton's voice – or did he have to? He said, "I had read everything that Michael Crichton wrote. So, I think had a sense of the voice. This book might be a little pacier than some of his books, just a little bit. But I had a feeling for it. I challenge people, for them to come out and say, This is where Michael stopped, and this is where James started. And I'm really proud of that. I'm really happy about it."

The end result – "Eruption," by Michael Crichton and James Patterson – will be out tomorrow.

eruption-little-brown-900.jpg

Patterson said, "There's a quote – I don't know where this comes from, and it's not me, but I love it, and it relates to my taking this project, and I think it's more valuable actually for 20-year-olds than it is for me – and the quote is, 'My time here is short; what can I do most beautifully?'

"And I felt with 'Eruption' and Michael Crichton, I thought I could do it beautifully," Patterson said.

He's not wrong; the finished book is already said to have studios clamoring for the film rights.

And it's also true to the spirit of the man who started it.  Sherri said, "He was amazing. He was vulnerable and kind."

And now, his work will live on, in a team effort that's both highly anticipated and – to Sherri Crichton at least – worth waiting for.

"I was single until the time I met Michael," she said. "And people used to go, 'Why are you so picky?' And I'm like, 'It's just not right yet. It's just not right.' So, I waited.

"And it was the same thing with Jim. … I waited on this manuscript until I felt that the time was right, that I had all the pieces of the puzzle. But then it had to be the right fit. And I think I did okay!"

How to tell if your older vehicle has a potentially dangerous Takata air bag under recall

DETROIT (AP) — Despite a long string of recalls that began more than two decades ago, about 6.2 million vehicles with potentially dangerous Takata air bag inflators remain on U.S. roads today.

On Wednesday, Nissan warned drivers of about 84,000 older Nissan and Infiniti vehicles not to drive them because the front passenger inflators can explode with too much force in a crash, spewing metal fragments that could kill or injure people.

The Nissan recall includes cars and SUVs as old as the 2002 model year that were recalled in 2020. In some cases, the fragments hit more than one person in a vehicle.

(AP Photo/Koji Sasahara, File)

In all, 67 million front driver and passenger inflators were included in what turned out to be the largest automotive recall in U.S. history. About 100 million inflators were recalled worldwide.

But despite years of publicity, recall letters and phone calls from automakers, about 9% of the recalled vehicles remain on the road without repairs.

Here’s what you need to know if you own an older vehicle that may have the faulty inflators:

WHAT VEHICLES HAVE RECALLED TAKATA INFLATORS?

Vehicles from 34 automotive brands eventually were recalled because they have the faulty inflators. Models from Acura, Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Daimler Trucks, Daimler Vans, Dodge/Ram, Ferrari, Fisker, Ford, GMC, Honda, Infiniti, Jaguar, Jeep, Land Rover, Lexus, Lincoln, Mazda, McLaren, Mercedes-Benz, Mercury, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, Scion, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, and Volkswagen were recalled. A complete list of models can be found on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website.

IS THERE A WAY TO CHECK MY VEHICLE?

Yes. Go to the NHTSA website and key in your license plate number or 17-digit vehicle identification number, which can be found on most state registration cards. The VIN also is stamped atop the driver’s side of your dashboard near the windshield. You can also sign up for future recall alerts for your vehicle from NHTSA. You may have gotten a letter from the automaker telling you about the recall, but if you bought the car recently, the company may not have found you. Automakers use state registration data to track down owners.

SHOULD I KEEP DRIVING THE VEHICLE IF IT HAS AN UNREPAIRED TAKATA INFLATOR?

Some automakers have warned owners to stop driving their vehicles because their Takata inflators are so dangerous that there’s a strong likelihood that they’ll explode and spew shrapnel. Honda, Ford, BMW, Toyota, Stellantis and Mazda have issued “do not drive” warnings. But even without a warning, it’s best to get the repairs done as soon as possible to eliminate the risk.

WHY SHOULD I BOTHER WITH THE RECALL REPAIRS?

Simply put, you could die or suffer a gruesome injury if you don’t. Takata used the volatile chemical ammonium nitrate to create a small explosion to quickly fill the air bags in a crash. But over the years the chemical can deteriorate, especially when exposed to high heat and humidity. It can burn too fast and blow apart a metal canister that’s supposed to contain the explosion, hurling metal fragments. In the U.S., 27 people have been killed and more than 400 were hurt. At least 35 have been killed in Malaysia, Australia and the U.S. Under federal law, the repairs are free for vehicle owners.
