Why is the PDF Export function not working in SOLIDWORKS Electrical?
Article by Vipanjot Kaur, CSWP updated November 10, 2017
Quite often customers using SOLIDWORKS Electrical have issues accessing printer properties while printing and creating PDFs from electrical drawings.
SOLIDWORKS Electrical PDF Export files are created with a third party application called “ PDF Creator “. Originally it used to be installed with SOLIDWORKS Electrical up to SOLIDWORKS 2016 SP4. But with SOLIDWORKS 2016 SP5 and onwards it was removed from the installation manager because antivirus applications often detected a potential threat which would result in SOLIDWORKS Electrical installation failure.
If you need to save SOLIDWORKS Electrical schematics as PDF, the SOLIDWORKS Electrical PDF creation utility can be downloaded separately.
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
- Copy all files from ‘C:\Program Files\SOLIDWORKS Corp\SOLIDWORKS Electrical\GhostScript\bin’ and paste them in ‘C:\Program Files\SOLIDWORKS Corp\SOLIDWORKS Electrical\GhostScript’.
- Open the registry editor and navigate to ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Trace Software\SolidWorks Electrical\Services\’
- Change the value of the ‘PDFPrinterName’ registry key from ‘TsPs’ to ‘PDFCreator’. If the ‘PDFPrinterName’ registry key does not exist, create it as a new string value.
- Navigate to ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Trace Software\ SolidWorks Electrical\Settings\CustomTempDir’.
- Change the value of the ‘CustomTempDir’ registry key to a path that does not contain a space. For example; ‘CustomTempDir=c:\temp’. If the ‘CustomTempDir’ registry key does not exist, create it as a new string value. Make sure to use a path that actually exists. If you do not follow this step, the ‘Export PDF files’ function will not return an error, but it will not create a PDF file.
- Select a setup language and click on the ‘OK’ button.
- On the Welcome page, click the ‘Next’ button.
- In the ‘Select Components’ section, disable ‘PDF Architect 4.
- Click the ‘Next’ button.
- Click the ‘Install’ button.
- ‘PDF Architect – Install PDF Architect with great free features’ click on the ‘No thanks’ button.
- ‘Get Web Companion PRO for FREE’. Select ‘No, don’t protect me’ and click on the ‘Next’ button
- Click the ‘Finish’ to complete install.
If you install the PDFCreator software, a dialog will prompt you to install the Web Companion add-in for your default homepage and PDF Architect 4. SOLIDWORKS Technical Support recommends that you select the ‘No, don’t protect me’ option to decline the installation of both of these applications. PDF Architect 4 may interfere with enabling other SOLIDWORKS add-in products.
Once PDF Creator is installed you should be able to create PDF’S and print Electrical drawings with no issues. To learn how to create SOLIDWORKS Electrical Smart PDF read this Blog article.

Why won't powerpoint export to a .pdf
When trying to export a powerpoint slide as a PDF, I get the following error: "An error occurred while PowerPoint was saving the file." with no further explanation. Is there a reason that this started happening?

The following steps have worked for other users:
Remove any objects or elements on the slide that are not necessary, such as images or videos, and try exporting the slide again.
Check for any corrupted objects on the slide. Sometimes, a corrupted object can cause issues with saving or exporting the slide. To check for this, select all the objects on the slide and then press Ctrl + C to copy them. Create a new slide and then press Ctrl + V to paste the objects onto the new slide. Try exporting the new slide as a PDF.
Check if any objects on the slide have transparency or are overlapping. Overlapping objects or objects with transparency can cause issues with exporting. Try rearranging or adjusting the objects on the slide and then exporting again.
If the slide contains any animations or transitions, try removing them and then exporting the slide as a PDF.

Thanks for your feedback.
Since it's just this one presentation, it probably is down to one or more corrupt slides or objects on slides. The quickest way to get to the bottom of this kind of problem is Divide & Conquer:
Make two copies of your presentation. Delete the first half of the slides from one and save. See if that one exports ok. If not, delete the second half of the slides from the other presentation and see if that one will export ok or not.
Rinse and repeat, each time starting with the half-presentation that won't export and dividing it in half again until you've narrowed it down to one or more slides that are causing the problem.
BUT before starting on this sometimes time-consuming process, you might want to start a new presentation based on the same template as this one, then copy/paste each of the slides from the old presentation into the new ones. Sometimes you get lucky and the copy/paste leaves the bad stuff behind.

Why PDF Export Function is not working in SOLIDWORKS Electrical
- Quite often customers using SOLIDWORKS Electrical have issues accessing printer properties while printing and creating PDFs from electrical drawings.
- SOLIDWORKS Electrical PDF Export files are created with a third-party application called “PDF Creator“.
- If you need to save SOLIDWORKS Electrical schematics as PDF, the SOLIDWORKS Electrical PDF creation utility can be downloaded separately.
To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
- Copy all files from C:\Program Files\SOLIDWORKS Corp\SOLIDWORKS Electrical\Ghost Script\bin and paste them in C:\Program Files\SOLIDWORKS Corp\SOLIDWORKS Electrical\Ghost Script.
- Open the registry editor and navigate to ‘HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Trace Software\SOLIDWORKS Electrical\Services.
- Install or reinstall the PDFCreator software from http://download.pdfforge.org/download/pdfcreator .
- Click the ‘Finish’ to complete the install.
- If you install the PDFCreator software, a dialog will prompt you to install the Web Companion add-in for your default homepage and PDF Architect 4. SOLIDWORKS Technical Support recommends that you select the ‘No, don’t protect me’ option to decline the installation of both applications. PDF Architect 4 may interfere with enabling other SOLIDWORKS add-in products.
- Once PDF Creator is installed you should be able to create PDF’S and print Electrical drawings with no issues

Smaller PDF sizes and turning off the transparency are the best solutions. Alternatively, some of the PDF drivers on the market that do not use Rasterization but use Vectorization would be the other way to resolve this. For example you could use CutePDF (free), Bluebeam, or Adobe.

Solution: Change views from a Shaded style to either "Visible Edges" or "Visible and Hidden Edges". You can also shade one view at a time and Print to PDF to narrow down which view is causing the crash. It may also help to set the scale of each view to 1:1, and make sure the drawing view style is set to something other than 'from parent'.
