Compare the Best Online Public Speaking Classes

Frequently asked questions, what does an online public speaking class include.

A typical online public speaking class includes lessons on mastering confident body language and tone of voice, reducing the use of filler words, and tips for minimizing anxiety. More comprehensive classes tend to include graded assignments, peer review sessions, and detailed information on how to study your audience. Class length varies. Some are taught in as little as one hour while others span across six or seven months. Most online classes do not have any prerequisites.

What Is the Cost of an Online Public Speaking Class?

Online public speaking classes vary in cost, ranging from completely free to thousands of dollars. Online classes tend to cost more when they include quizzes, peer reviews, personalized feedback, or a completion certificate. Free or low-cost classes usually only consist of pre-recorded videos and exercise suggestions, with no option to submit graded assignments or earn a certificate. Classes that offer professional certificates can run anywhere from $30 to $250. Classes that offer real college credit run upward of $1,000.

Is Taking an Online Public Speaking Class Worth It?

You can always practice your speech in front of a mirror, but taking an online public speaking class can help you analyze your audience, prepare your speech ahead of time, and get constructive feedback on your presence and mannerisms. With formal training, you can pinpoint your exact strengths and weaknesses, learn tips and tricks, and earn a certification to share on your LinkedIn profile and your resume.

How long does it take to improve public speaking?

The amount of time it takes to improve your public speaking can vary depending on the level of mastery you want to reach. For a basic understanding, it may only take a few weeks or months. However, if you're working to gain complete mastery, especially if you want to go into public speaking professionally, it can take years.

We looked at about 20 different classes before narrowing it down to this final list. To choose the best classes, we factored in course content, required time commitments, costs, user reviews, and instructor expertise and engagement. Other important considerations were certificate or credit options and accessibility.

  • Some focus on storytelling and persuasive writing so you can be confident in what you're presenting too.

Insider Today

If giving presentations or chiming in during brainstorm sessions makes you nervous, you might not mind your current remote work setup. But a pandemic may actually be the best time to brush up on your public speaking skills.

For one, many online classes remove the scariest factor — a live audience. When you can pre-record your assignments or simply watch an expert share their tips, the barrier to entry gets lower. And even in courses held over Zoom, presenting via camera takes away the very real panic of standing at a podium.

Beyond that, the ability to captivate a crowd is invaluable even when you're working remotely. Whether you're trying to make your virtual team all-hands more engaging or need to nail those final rounds of job interviews, having more confidence as a presenter can make all the difference in your career.

The courses below range from public speaking and communication tips to storytelling and rhetoric, since your presentation is only as good as your actual speech. Some classes are also free to audit, meaning you have access to them but won't receive a grade or certification. If you want to take a paid course or earn a certificate of completion, prices can range from $15-$49 a month, depending on the learning platform.

Public speaking is one of the most important skills in today’s world. Public presentation skills allow individuals whether students, business professionals, elected officials, motivational authors or speakers, entertainers, or other professionals to persuade and captivate their audience effectively. Therefore, pursuing a public speaking certification can be a great way to advance your goals.

According to a study by sociologist Andrew Zekeri, college graduates consider oral communication and public speaking skills to be the number one skill. Thousands of college students and professionals take up public speaking courses online every year.

Public speaking training courses are designed to teach individuals the skills and techniques that they need to capture audience’s attention. These help to improve the ability to communicate, overcome fear and anxiety of public speaking, develop leadership skills and project confidence. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of public speaking skills training –

  • Developing critical thinking skills – Individuals can develop critical thinking skills by pursuing public speaking classes. Since students, as well as professionals, need an ability to think critically as well as problem-solving skills, they can greatly benefit from these classes.
  • Analytical and research skills – Another great benefit of pursuing a speech communication class is that individuals can enhance their ability to conduct research and use their analytical skills. Since public speakers are required to provide evidence for the facts that they mention in their speeches, research and analytical skills are automatically strengthened.
  • Improving verbal as well as non-verbal skills – Another benefit of taking public speaking lessons is that individuals can improve their verbal and non-verbal skills. These help you to practice your communication skills, whether you’re speaking for the first time or have experience with public speaking. Sometimes, people who are speaking in public settings tend to pause too often or twirl their hair or mispronounce words repeatedly, without realizing. To overcome these tiny mistakes, a public speech course can be helpful.
  • Overcoming fear of public speaking – One of the most important benefits of pursuing speaking courses is overcoming the fear of public speaking. Most people experience some form of anxiety when they’re supposed to speak in public. Through public speaking workshops, they can learn various strategies to reduce their anxiety and become more confident.

AI augment public speaking is already here.

In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, AI has emerged as a revolutionary force in various fields, including the realm of public speaking. In fact, it is a veritable whirlwind on how much AI has changed this industry, so we will delve into how public speakers are harnessing AI to enhance their presentations, offering real-world examples of AI tools in action.

AI for Speech Writing and Enhancement

One of the most significant ways AI is utilized in public speaking is through aiding in speech writing and enhancement. Tools like Grammarly leverage AI to offer advanced grammar, clarity, engagement, and delivery suggestions, making speeches more compelling and error-free. For instance, a TEDx speaker might use Grammarly to refine their speech, ensuring it is not only grammatically impeccable but also engaging and clear to a diverse audience.

Audience Engagement Analysis

Understanding and engaging the audience is crucial for any speaker. AI powered tools like Microsoft's Speaker Coach provide real-time feedback on pacing, use of filler words, and even cultural insensitivity. These tools help speakers refine their delivery for maximum audience impact. A notable example is a keynote speaker at a tech conference utilizing Presentation Coach to adjust their pacing and reduce reliance on filler words, thereby enhancing audience engagement.

AI real-time translation has become widespread.

Real-time Translation Services

In an increasingly globalized world, the ability to communicate across languages is invaluable. For example, a speaker at an international summit could leverage this technology to instantly translate their speech, making it accessible to a non-English speaking audience, thereby widening their impact.

AI Teleprompters

Teleprompters have long been a staple in public speaking, but AI teleprompters like PromptSmart Pro offer an enhanced experience by automatically scrolling the text at the speaker's natural pace. This feature allows for a more seamless delivery, as the speaker does not need to manually adjust the speed of the teleprompter. A corporate leader giving a company-wide address might use PromptSmart Pro to ensure a more natural and engaging delivery.

Personalizing Speech Content

AI can also aid in tailoring speech content to specific audiences. Using AI algorithms, speakers can analyze previous speeches and audience feedback to customize their content for different groups. For example, a motivational speaker could use such insights to adapt their message for a corporate audience versus a group of students, ensuring relevancy and resonance with each group.

AI's role in public speaking represents a synergy between human creativity and technological innovation. By leveraging AI tools for speech writing, audience engagement, voice modulation, real-time translation, and personalized content, speakers can enhance their effectiveness and reach. As AI continues to evolve, its integration into public speaking will undoubtedly deepen, offering even more exciting possibilities for speakers around the world.

Giovanni Biggers will use MAPS degree to boost others

He focused on business and public policy in the UNC Graduate School’s flexible interdisciplinary program.

Giovanni Biggers sitting under the Old Well.

Giovanni Biggers ’22, ’24 (MA) looks forward to putting the skills and knowledge he gleaned as part of the first class of the  Master of Applied Professional Studies  program to good use. Biggers would like to work for — or create — an organization to help underprivileged kids find avenues to higher education.

“Going to public school in Baltimore, there was a serious lack of resources. The schools were worn down, and, as a student, you just didn’t feel like you had any access to higher education or career opportunities,” Biggers said.

Biggers came to UNC-Chapel Hill by way of hard work in the classroom and on the football field. He continued excelling in both areas, graduating in 2022 with an interdisciplinary Bachelor of Arts in management and society.

Biggers wanted to stay at UNC-Chapel Hill but was unsure about his path to graduate school. He thought that no graduate program matched his aspirations precisely — until he heard about MAPS, which met his specific post-graduate needs. He will receive his MAPS degree at the University’s Spring Commencement.

Launched by the UNC Graduate School in 2023, MAPS is a flexible interdisciplinary graduate program for students who find value in a customized graduate degree. At the program’s core are a series of courses in leadership and business fundamentals designed to provide students with essential professional skills. Students pick their own concentration and design a program of study to meet their career needs and interests.

Biggers realized that the MAPS program would allow him to take classes in business and in public policy, fulfilling his goals and interests.

The MAPS program also allows students the scheduling flexibility, and students can attend part- or full-time, completing their degrees in as little as 18 months. This part of the program also appealed to Biggers, as it has for other MAPS students involved in athletics or other time-consuming endeavors.

“The MAPS classes were challenging but rewarding, and I was able to learn things that were applicable to what I want to do,” Biggers said. “I built my course of studies on business and public policy classes, where I could learn what I wanted to learn and also build leadership skills.”

Biggers is an example of one type of student that the program was created for, said Laura Kuizin, MAPS director.

“Throughout his time working on his master’s degree, Giovanni has consistently demonstrated a commitment to his education and a genuine passion for learning,” Kuizin said. “Giovanni made the most out of his time in the MAPS program, utilizing the flexibility of the program to design a curriculum unique to his professional goals. As he prepares to graduate and begin the next phase of his journey, I have no doubt that Giovanni will continue to make a positive impact and I look forward to celebrating his future successes.”

A lot's happened today on the northeastern border between Ukraine and Russia.

Russia's fierce offensive has continued in the Kharkiv region, with thousands of civilians continuing to flee.

Ukraine's military chief Oleksandr Syrskyi insisted his forces were doing all they could to contain the Russian threat, but admitted it was proving a challenge, while Russia's defence ministry claimed Putin's troops had taken another four villages near the border.

Meanwhile Russian media said at least seven people had been killed and 17 injured after a 10-storey apartment block collapsed in the Russian city of Belgorod.

Russian officials made unverified claims the missile was part of an aerial attack by Ukraine.

We'll be back with any major updates later, and we'll resume our regular live updates tomorrow morning.

Thanks for following along.

The Ukrainian air force has warned a rocket flew through Ukraine's Sumy region this afternoon - not far from Kharkiv.

It didn't give any more information about the rocket, other than saying it was part of "significant activity of enemy aviation".

A Kyiv Independent journalist on the ground in Kharkiv reported hearing explosions later this afternoon, the publication said.

They said they heard them at around 4.15pm local time (2.15pm GMT) - about an hour after the air force's update.

This report hasn't been backed up by Ukrainian officials.

We've got an update completely out of left field now...

The Ukrainian president's top aide has just tweeted saying he's held a meeting with none other than rock legend Bono.

Andriy Yermak said they discussed how Ukraine continues to "resist Russian aggression".

The Irishman has been a vocal supporter of Ukraine since its war with Russia began.

In 2022, he put on a surprise gig in Kyiv and told Sky News the conflict was "one man's war really" - referring to Russian president Vladimir Putin.

More recently the 64-year-old singer, who's never been one to shy away from politics, started paying tribute to Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny during a live performance days after he died in prison.

We've now got footage showing the moment a 10-storey apartment block collapsed in Belgorod.

At least seven people have been killed and 17 more injured after the building was struck by a shot-down missile, Russian media says.

Russian officials say the missile was part of an aerial attack by Ukraine. The claims have not been verified.

Footage also shows emergency services continuing to search the rubble for survivors.

We're seeing photos for the first time of Ukrainian soldiers on the frontline against Russia's offensive in Kharkiv.

Their military chief Oleksandr Syrskyi earlier insisted Ukrainian forces were doing all they could to contain the Russian threat, but admitted it was proving a challenge.

You can see the impact of that challenge in the images below, two of which show Ukrainian military paramedics treating a wounded service member.

They're near the town of Vovchansk, which has seen some of the most brutal fighting since the Russian attack began on Friday.

Some more details now from the ongoing search of a collapsed apartment block in the Russian city of Belgorod.

At least seven are dead and 17 injured after the 10-storey block fell, according to Russian media.

Russian officials say the building was struck by a Soviet-era missile launched by Ukraine that was shot down by Russia.

Specifically, they claimed it was a "massive mile attack" with Tochka ballistic missiles and Adler and RM-70 Vampire (MLRS) multiple launch rocket systems.

They said the attack, which involved at least 12 missiles, took place at 8.40am GMT.

Later, as emergency services scoured the rubble for survivors, the roof of the block collapsed and people ran for their lives, Reuters reported, with dust and rubble falling behind them.

Russian claims of a Ukrainian attack have not been verified and Kyiv officials have not commented.

Ukrainian officials never acknowledge responsibility for attacks on Russian territory or the Crimean Peninsula.

You may have noticed the bulk of our reporting over the past two days has covered two regions: Kharkiv in Ukraine and Belgorod in Russia.

A lot has happened in both, but here's a summary of events:

In Kharkiv:  Russian forces have launched a brutal offensive, leading to fighting in various villages along the northeastern border separating Ukraine and Russia.

Russia's defence ministry claims its troops have seized nine villages. Ukrainian officials, who have not commented on these claims, say thousands of civilians have been evacuated from the region.

In Belgorod:   Russian media has reported at least seven people have died and 15 more are injured after a whole section of the 10-storey building fell.

The governor of Russia's Belgorod region said the incident is a consequence of continuous attacks by Ukraine over the weekend - though Ukraine has not commented on the unverified claims.

Cities on opposite sides of the border

On the surface, these are separate incidents happening right next to each other.

And while Ukraine hasn't commented on whether it's responsible for the latest incident in Belgorod, it's no secret the city has regularly been targeted by Ukrainian artillery, drones and proxies over the past year.

Belgorod is a logistics hub for Russian military activity and Kyiv has always denied targeting civilians.

Military analysts have speculated these attacks in Belgorod could have led Russia to carry out its brutal offensive in Kharkiv.

President Putin has long promised to create a buffer zone to push Ukrainian forces out of artillery range, which would limit the attacks on this frontier town.

It's a likely motive, our military analyst  Sean Bell  has said, as is stretching Ukraine's military and potentially looking to seize the whole of Kharkiv.

We're seeing images from the Russian city of Belgorod, where part of a multi-storey apartment building has collapsed.

Russian media has reported at least seven people have died and 15 more are injured after a whole section of the 10-storey building fell.

Local officials have blamed the incident on "massive shelling by the armed forces of Ukraine" - but these claims have not been verified and Ukrainian officials have not commented.

Just before Russia claimed its troops had seized another four villages in Kharkiv, Ukraine's military chief had given an update on Telegram.

Oleksandr Syrskyi insisted his forces were doing all they could to contain the Russian threat, but admitted it was proving a challenge.

"Units of the Defence Forces are fighting fierce defensive battles, the attempts of the Russian invaders to break through our defences have been stopped," he said.

"The situation is difficult, but the Defence Forces of Ukraine are doing everything to hold defensive lines and positions, inflict damage on the enemy."

Ukrainian officials have not commented on reports from Russia claiming it has captured the villages of Hatyshche, Krasne, Morokhovets and Oliinykove.

The Russian defence ministry claims troops have seized four more villages in the Kharkiv region - which would bring the total to nine.

The ministry yesterday declared they had taken the Ukrainian villages of Borysivka, Ohirtseve, Pylna and Strilecha, all of which are directly on the border with Russia's Belgorod region.

Russian officials said they had also captured another village, Pletenivka.

Now they've claimed four more: Hatyshche, Krasne, Morokhovets and Oliinykove.

Kyiv has not commented on the latest claims, but Ukrainian officials have remained adamant up until now that the country's troops are continuing to fight and prevent Russians from claiming more ground.

The best public golf courses in San Diego

As a native San Diegan, I’ll admit to my bias upfront. I happen to think San Diego is the most livable city in the country, maybe the world—even if we pay a handsome price for our famously fantastic weather. In my travels around the world, when I mention my hometown, there are two predictable responses—“I love San Diego!” or “I’ve heard great things about it!”

There are plenty of reasons for that, beyond craft beers and fish tacos, and those include several dozen public golf courses that are mostly reasonably priced and well-conditioned. Indeed, it’s always surprised me a bit that San Diego doesn’t get mentioned more often as a specific golf destination alongside communities like Scottsdale, Ariz., and Myrtle Beach, S.C., where either heat or humidity make them all but unplayable for months of the year. San Diego is inviting for golf about 350 days a year, with most of the rounds played in shorts and short sleeves. Meantime, forget about trying to play much public golf in L.A., because it’s either munys or privates there, and nothing much between. Orange County? Sure, if you want to spend a car payment to play a round.

Anyway, that’s my rant, but in getting back to San Diego golf, I wouldn’t say there are a lot of truly great courses in the area, but plenty of good ones that can easily fill a vacation or business visit.

public speaking best courses

San Diego is rightfully known for the Torrey Pines South and North courses that have hosted two U.S. Opens and the PGA Tour since 1969. (The South was ranked No. 35 in Golf Digest's most recent 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses. ) For a certain generation, the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa, which held tour events for decades, is recognizable, but it has only recently returned to the national spotlight with a Gil Hanse renovation that will allow it to host the NCAA Division I Golf Championships.

There is so much quality golf beyond those venues. When someone asks me about where to play, my first response is not Torrey Pines, but the municipal Coronado Golf Course . Coronado is a semi-island across a bridge from downtown and its golf course is quintessential San Diego, with a view of the skyline, San Diego Bay, historic Hotel Del Coronado, and a yacht club. And the green fees are relatively reasonable—under $100—whether you’re from Dallas or Tokyo. (This was President Bill Clinton’s San Diego course of choice when he was in office; President Barack Obama preferred Torrey Pines.)

As noted in the listings below, the beauty of San Diego golf is the variety, from courses with seaside views such as Torrey Pines, Encinitas Ranch and Aviara , to Balboa Park near downtown and the zoo, to the eastern hillsides, with gems like the 36-hole Singing Hills Golf Resort by Sycuan and the spectacular, rock-strewn Mt. Woodson . Further east but still in San Diego County, in the Anza Borrego desert, is the fantastic Rams Hill Golf Club —the only course in the region besides Torrey South to be on Golf Digest’s 100 Greatest Public Courses in America. You want to play a public course frequently by San Diego's numerous tour pros? It's the Fairmont Grand Del Mar , where the regulars include Phil Mickelson, Xander Schauffele and Charley Hoffman.

A further benefit: All of these just listed, other than Rams Hill, are no more than about 30-40 minutes from San Diego’s airport. Truly, it’s unlikely to find more variety of land, sea, mountains and desert in such proximity anywhere in North America.

RELATED:  10 courses I really want to play in 2024

Before we get to the list, a word on Torrey Pines. It is extremely hard to get on either course without an advance reservation, so it’s best to plan months in advance—though if you’re going out as a single, walk-ups are a viable and encouraged option. As for the courses—the South is an absolute beast and lives up to its major championship pedigree in difficulty. If you’re OK getting pummeled by a golf course and loving it, go for it. But if you want an enjoyable round with just as much incredible scenery, choose the North. The late Tom Weiskopf did a wonderful job making the course—still played for two rounds during the Farmers—more interesting and playable. From the correct set of tees, you’ll truly have a blast for much less dough than the South.

With that, our choices for the best courses in San Diego:

Rams Hill Golf Club

Rams Hill Golf Club

Borrego springs, ca.

Ranked among Golf Digest's 100 Greatest Public Courses in America, this golf development within Anza Borrego Desert State Park, on the western edge of the Sonoran Desert about an hour from La Quinta, Calif., was revived by San Diego ownership in the mid-2000s with an entirely new course built by Tom Fazio. Some of Fazio’s spacious holes are molded into the desert earth and others ride the up and down rocky elevations, leading to a finish that includes the short par-4 17th and gambler’s par-5 18th that streaks uphill around a water feature.

Coronado Golf Course

Coronado, ca.

Coronado Golf Course is arguably one of the best municipal courses in the country, with reasonable green fees and spectacular views of the San Diego downtown skyle and historic Hotel Del Coronado. The layout, featuring wall-to-wall kikuyu grass, is straight-forward and the conditioning is always top notch.

Aviara Golf Club

Aviara Golf Club

Carlsbad, ca.

Aviara, part of an upscale Hyatt resort, hosted the LPGA's annual tournament for a decade. The only Arnold Palmer design in the area, this resort course meanders through rolling hillsides and is landscaped with native Southern California wildflowers. In the spring, it is arguably San Diego's most beautiful course that's not directly on the water.

Singing Hills Golf Resort At Sycuan: Oak Glen and Willow Glen

Singing Hills Golf Resort At Sycuan: Oak Glen and Willow Glen

El cajon, ca.

There are 36 holes at Singing Hills, located about 20 miles east of San Diego. Willow Glen has hosted two U.S. Junior Amateurs, first in 1973 and again in 1989, when David Duval defeated Austin Maki in the finals. Both courses offer beautiful views of the surrounding hills and feature narrow fairways often guarded by Sweetwater River, which comes into play on many holes.

Mt. Woodson Golf Club

Mt. Woodson Golf Club

Mt. Woodson features one of the most spectacular golf settings in San Diego. It sits in hills covered with large boulders and is a short, target course with a number of forced carries and greens on the edge of cliffs. if that sounds challenging, it is, but there are no tricks here, just a lot of fun views and shots to play. Woodson also features its own wooden bridge that runs for a couple of hundred yards and is, alone, worth the price of the green fee.

Fairmont Grand Del Mar

Fairmont Grand Del Mar

San diego, ca.

Even if you're playing the Fairmont Grand Del Mar for the first time, you may recognize some holes. It has been the site of numerous TV and magazine commercial shoots with the likes of Phil Mickelson and Xander Schauffele, who play regularly here. The Tom Fazio layout sits east of the seaside town of Del Mar, in the rolling hills, and it challenges with tight fairways and rolling greens.

OMNI La Costa Resort & Spa: North and South Courses

OMNI La Costa Resort & Spa: North and South Courses

North of San Diego in the coastal community of Carlsbad, La Costa hosted 37 PGA Tour events through the mid-2000s. The Nouth Course (previously knowns as the Champions Course) was renovated in 2011 by Steve Pate and Damian Pascuzzo, but it got a much larger redo in 2023 by Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner so that Omni La Costa could host the NCAA Division I Golf Championships. Hanse/Wagner added many of their signature features, including native areas, barranca and falloff areas around thre greens. With six sets of tees, there are plenty of options for the public to take on an exciting new design. With the North Course completed, Omni now has its sights set on a renovation of the South in the next few years.

Encinitas Ranch

Encinitas Ranch

Encinitas, ca.

From Golf Digest Architecture Editor emeritus Ron Whitten: Overall, Encinitas Ranch has an appealing landscape that promises playability and delivers a decent score. Perhaps its most distinctive feature involves its graceful fairway bunkers. All are set in mounds and are raised slightly above the level of the fairways. ... Encinitas Ranch is not a perfect course. It definitely favors a cart and is not an easy walk.
