MCAST Institute for the Creative Arts

With departments covering everything from fine arts to 3D design, fashion design, journalism and performing arts among others, MCAST Institute for the Creative Arts  is a hive of young, creative talent.  Made up of 10 departments with courses at six levels, it allows students to enrol at any point, and provides unique insight into Malta's up-and-coming creative scene.

This department of MCAST was set up in 2001, and is the only institute outside of the main Paola school, with some 800 students.

Director of Creative Arts Tyrone Grima says, "the most popular subjects at the moment are graphic design and creative media (filming, TV management, writing, editing, etc.)" - subjects which, with the increasing importance of the digital world, are very much on a par with today's reality.

The approach to teaching at MCAST is more of a hands-on practice method, as opposed to all theory. While the curriculum is quite strict, the brief of how to translate that is left in the expressive hands of the lecturers. To test their creativity, students are assigned live cases; real projects which they are then assessed on.

What is the reality for the future of post-grad MCAST students in Malta?

"There are different realities depending on the course taken. Some students go on to another institute to gain their Masters degree, while others immediately find directly related work, particularly in certain subjects such as graphic design and interactive media.

"Some of the more driven students go off and do their own thing. However, the student needs to be very creative and be willing to struggle a bit. Luckily, the Malta Arts Council is very helpful and encouraging.

"Then of course, there is always the reality that some students will find employment in a sector that's completely unrelated to what they studied, whereby they can still transfer the general skills that they learned throughout the course.

" We challenge students to break out of their comfort zone to avoid stagnation."

"Some of our students go abroad to broaden their horizons. We encourage these students to be humble in their approach. The arts are hard work, plus a little luck. We try to remind students that they're only as good as their last project. We challenge them to break out of their comfort zone so as to avoid stagnation."

MCAST student and now lecturer Nicky Ann Aquilina affirms, "the highlights of my experience as a student were primarily the numerous audio-visual productions we were able to work on and the incredible opportunities these gave me to meet new people who shared the same creative drive as I did. After completing my undergraduate studies, I immediately knew that I wasn't quite finished with exploring the compelling world of mass communications. I successfully read a post grad in Mass Communications and today I still feel intrigued by discovering more. MCAST not only equipped me with the necessary competences to work in the media sector, but further instilled a sense of perseverance, righteousness and work ethic which are key to succeeding personally and professionally."

If you happen to be in Malta between 3rd and 7th July, check out the ICA Festival, which is a showcase of the students' work. Each evening focuses on a different department, and is open to the public within various venues in Valletta.

Mission Statement

To provide universally accessible vocational and professional education and training with an international dimension, responsive to the needs of the individual and the economy.

National Role

Established in 2001, the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) is the country’s leading vocational education and training institution.  It collaborates with various national stakeholders and industry partners.  MCAST offers over 190 full-time courses and over 300 part-time vocational courses ranging from certificates to Doctoral level (MQF Level 1 to Level 8).

The six (6) MCAST Institutes provide all the technical and professional expertise towards the delivery of VET programmes.  They also maintain the aim of driving forward all the areas of study under their respective responsibility.  This corporate structure enables focused strategies, which address the specific needs of students at each level, while maintaining a healthy dialogue with all interested stakeholders in order to provide the best programmes for the needs of the local economy and society.

This relationship with industry stimulates MCAST’s success.  Programmes are flexible, relevant and responsive to the aspirations of the students and to the needs of industries, which are constantly evolving to meet the challenges of a changing global economy.  For this reason, programmes are cyclically reviewed by engaging stakeholders (i.e. industry, teachers, learners), to challenge content and practice, and to support learning in a more proactive manner.

Presently, thirteen (13) degree programmes are offered at the MCAST Institute for the Creative Arts (ICA), and students can follow different progression routes to achieve their area of preference.

Work-based (and lifelong) learning is the foremost asset of learning experience at MCAST.  The College ensures that all qualifications are relevant to both the changing skills and competencies required by industries today, as well as traditional jobs, thereby linking talent to the needs of the labour market.

MCAST also supports small and medium-sized enterprises through a multidisciplinary approach.  This encompasses work-based learning through apprenticeship programmes, various entrepreneurship initiatives, and through the MG2i services (MCAST’s commercial arm), providing tailor-made training courses.  The College is focusing on increasing the portfolio of MG2i by developing new programmes in life-long learning, accrediting new programmes at different levels (including Masters degrees), and the introduction of other professional development programmes.  It is working on the internationalisation of MG2i through the Training and Professional Development Programmes and joint venture opportunities in different vocational areas.

Exploring Sicily’s Agricultural Treasures: A Week of Learning and Discovery

A group of students following Fisheries, Aquaculture, Veterinary Nursing, and Horticulture courses at the Centre of Agriculture, Aquatics, and Animal Sciences (CAAAS) within the Malta College of Arts, Science, and Technology (MCAST) embarked on a transformative week-long site visit to Sicily. Guided by their lecturers, this educational experience offered invaluable insights into the intricate Sicilian farming practices.

WhatsApp Image 2024-05-31 at 13.01.54 (1)

The trip started with a visit to a freshwater fish hatchery and sport fishing facility. Amidst the tranquil beauty of nature, students delved into the science of creating artificial lakes, farming of fish, and aquaponics. Students also visited a buffalo farm, where they learnt about husbandry, nutrition, and the artisanal production of Italy’s prized mozzarella. There they witnessed first-hand, the dedication and craftsmanship required to cultivate this culinary delight.

The journey then led the learners to an ancient water mill nestled within a cave—a testament to Sicily’s rich historical heritage. Here, they learnt about ancient engineering and the milling process and gained insights into flour production. Next, students visited a vibrant herb farm where they appreciated the art of herb production. Yet, beyond the fields, they were captivated by the narrative of an entrepreneur – a testament to the resilience and determination required to transform dreams into reality. The trip ended with a visit to a botanical garden and park, and a plant nursery covering more than 600 hectares of land and producing more than 5000 varieties of Mediterranean plants.

WhatsApp Image 2024-05-31 at 13.01.54 (3)

This trip not only helped students gain a deeper understanding of the symbiotic relationship between humanity and the land, but they also returned home with broadened horizons in terms of project and entrepreneurial possibilities.

Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles Plans an Upgrade

The downtown museum will purchase its building, incorporate artist residencies and add a cafe that will have a collaborative twist.

The exterior of a building reads "Institute of Contemporary Art Los Angeles."

By Robin Pogrebin

In a statement of its commitment to artists and to downtown , the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles is planning to buy the East Seventh Street building it occupies and improve it with a cafe, outdoor space and studios for a new artists-in-residence program.

“I want to make sure that this institution is here for generations to come,” Anne Ellegood, the museum’s director, said in a recent interview, “making sure it’s sustainable.”

Since the institution moved from the west side — where it was called the Santa Monica Museum of Art — and rebranded itself with a new name in the downtown Arts District in 2017, Ellegood said, its location has become integral to its identity. “It’s literally a neighborhood named for artists, which is increasingly a neighborhood where artists are not present and can’t afford to be here,” she said.

“How can we find ways to bring them back in?” she added. “In Los Angeles, studio spaces are becoming less affordable. ”

The building’s $5 million purchase price has been largely covered by a $4.4 million naming gift from the Mohn Family Trust, to be announced on Saturday at the museum’s spring benefit. (The building will be called the Mohn Family Building.)

“I don’t think they’re duplicative of what anybody else is doing in town,” Jarl Mohn, a venture capitalist and chief executive of National Public Radio until 2019, said of the museum and the family’s decision to make the gift. “It’s a really important piece of the puzzle.”

Founded in 1988, the institute has established a loyal following as a place to see emerging and unrecognized artists. The museum was in the vanguard of presenting artists of color; Pope.L had his first solo West Coast museum exhibition there and Mickalene Thomas’s first solo exhibition in a U.S. museum opened at the institute and subsequently traveled to the Brooklyn Museum .

In 2017, the museum moved to a former manufacturing building in downtown Los Angeles and in 2019 Ellegood took over for the longtime director, Elsa Longhauser .

Given the scope of some museum building projects, this one is modest — $5 million, with an overall fund-raising campaign of about $12 million (more than $7 million has been raised so far). The Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles has an annual operating budget of $3.5 million, no endowment and a full-time staff of 12.

But the effort is significant for an institution of its size. “We aren’t doing a $100 million expansion of our building,” Ellegood said, referring to the nearby Broad museum’s recent announcement . “But we’re doing a campaign with certain kinds of growth for our institution that are just as meaningful.”

Artists have come to appreciate this museum’s role in the city’s cultural ecosystem. The Institute is “often first on the ground in terms of trends or interests,” said the artist Charles Gaines, who serves on the board. “The big institutions can’t be as nimble.”

The institute is one of several notable smaller arts organizations centering artists in Los Angeles; others include Art+Practice , started by the artist Mark Bradford, and LAXART, which is changing its name to the Brick and will open a new space in Melrose Hill on June 16.

“Buying the building is the most important thing you can do in terms of permanence,” said the artist Rebecca Morris, who had a survey show there in 2022. “You’re building your house where artists live.”

The new residency program will initially focus on Los Angeles-based artists, and Ellegood said she hopes to eventually add more studios and include national and international artists.

At the back of the building, the developer AvalonBay Communities created the artist studios; a landscaped pedestrian-only paseo (walkway) that can be used for outdoor programming, performances, and events; and a plaza for the museum that will contain its new north entrance through a 450-square-foot pavilion.

“How do we make this more inviting and create a sense of access,” said the artist Andrea Fraser, a trustee, “ so you’re not just coming to see shows or go to a specific program, but it’s a community space.”

Parking has always been a challenge for the museum, given that it has only eight spaces. Under the renovation plan, the museum is transforming its small parking lot into a gathering area with seating for the new cafe and will encourage visitors to park at a nearby public garage on Industrial Street, which has about 160 spaces.

The cafe, which is planned for the Seventh Street side of the building, will feature a residency program for emerging chefs that will allow them to try out menus and collaborate with artists.

Ellegood said the building project represents the museum’s progress and its future goals. “It’s a real signal that we are committed to this neighborhood,” she said, “and that we’re not going anywhere.”

An earlier version of this article described incorrectly the role of Elsa Longhauser . She was a longtime director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, not its founding director.

Summer academy fosters collaboration, high-impact arts and humanities research and creative activity

A cohort of Indiana University Indianapolis faculty took their research and creative activity to the next level after convening for a three-week intensive at the end of the spring semester.

Since 2018, the IU Indianapolis Arts and Humanities Institute’s Summer Academy has provided faculty with time and resources to meet specific project goals that integrate the arts, humanities or qualitative social science approaches into their research agenda. This year, nine IU Indianapolis faculty were selected as fellows.

Summer Academy fellows receive $5,000 to accelerate their research and creative activity projects. During the three weeks, they participate in peer review, guided writing exercises, professional development, training in public communication and social media, and more.

“The IU Indianapolis Arts and Humanities Institute Summer Academy offers the unique opportunity to join colleagues in exploring, distilling and executing innovative ideas drawn from our various research interests,” said Summer Academy fellow Lasana Kazembe , an associate professor in the IU School of Education who focused on developing a professional book prospectus for his new book, “Hardbop: The Jazz Writings of Amiri Baraka.”

“I participate in the Summer Academy because I enjoy the camaraderie, the communal spirit and the intellectual kung fu,” he said.

Summer Academy fellows pursue high-impact research and creative activity, which is central to the IU 2030 strategic plan . And while interdisciplinary collaboration is key to the program’s success, the Summer Academy also allows each faculty member to really focus on their own individual project goals.

Summer Academy fellow Danielle Riede , the Randolph H. Deer Professor in Painting in the Herron School of Art and Design, developed grant proposals to create new versions of her 2024 site-specific installation, “Venus Walks on Pearls II.”

Gürkan Mihçi and Robert Swazo work together at a computer.

“The resources provided by the IU Indianapolis Arts and Humanities Institute’s Summer Academy have allowed me to align my current research with external grant mechanisms,” Riede said. “Being part of a creative cohort has sparked new ideas for my current projects, ‘Venus Walks on Pearls’ and ‘Wingspan in Situ.’ By preparing drafts for grants and residencies, I will secure funding to develop and exhibit new multi-media installations in France and New York.”

According to IU Indianapolis Arts and Humanities Director Jason Kelly , the Summer Academy takes one of the best parts of academia – engaging with others to think critically about interesting topics – to help move faculty further towards their goals.

“Fellows receive insights from people they have never met before, and it is changing how they think about their work and how they do their work,” Kelly said. “You have to be in the room to experience it to know what a truly transformative experience it is. I have seen my colleagues flourish because they have been given the space to focus and are receiving the support of colleagues to work through their issues and achieve their goals.”

In addition to Kazembe and Riede, other members of the 2024 cohort included  Kevin Cramer , Terry Kirts , Daniella Kostroun , Sarah Layden , Gürkan Mıhçı , Megan Musgrave and Roberto Swazo.
