15 Tips to Help You Write a Stellar Essay

Essay-writing can be easier than you might think if you have a grasp of the basics and a willingness to engage with the subject matter. Here are 15 top tips for writing a stellar essay.
Do Your Research
This is one of the most important tips you’ll ever receive. Research thoroughly, even if it means you have too many notes. It’s better to have to leave stuff out than not have enough to write about.

Make an Outline
Without a properly structured outline (with an intro, a four- to five-point body and a conclusion), your essay may be hard to write and to follow.

Hook Attention
While you might just be writing your essay for a teacher or professor that is paid to read it, it still pays to grab their attention. A “hook” like a quote or surprising statistic in your intro can make your reader want to read on.

Lay Out Your Thesis
The intro isn’t all about flair and grabbing attention. It’s also about laying out your thesis. Make your main argument clear in the first few sentences, setting up a question to answer or statement to prove.

Avoid Passive Voice
If you want your writing to be persuasive, passive voice should be avoided. (That sentence was full of it, by the way. For example, “You should avoid passive voice” is a more convincing way to say “passive voice should be avoided.”)

Avoid First-Person Voice
If you’re writing an academic essay, you should almost certainly avoid first-person voice. In other words, avoid saying “I” or “my.” Also restrict your use of the second-person voice (e.g., don’t use “you” unless it’s necessary).

Start With Your Strongest Point
In general, it’s a good idea to start with your strongest argument in your first body paragraph. This sets the scene nicely. However, this might not be appropriate if you are structuring your essay points chronologically.

Relate All Points Back to Your Thesis
Make it clear to your reader how each point you make relates back to your thesis (i.e., the question or statement in your introduction, and probably your title too). This helps them to follow your argument.

Contextualize Without Losing Focus
Add contextualizing information for a richer presentation of your topic. For example, it’s fine (or even desirable) to discuss the historical background for certain events. Just don’t get bogged down by irrelevant details.

Use Transition Phrases
Transition phrases, such as “furthermore,” “by contrast” and “on the other hand,” can also help your reader to follow your argument. But don’t overuse them at the cost of clarity. Read your essay aloud to gauge how it flows.

Conclude With a Return to Your Thesis
A conclusion can do many things, but it’s useful to think of it as an answer to the question or statement in your intro. It’s sensible to summarize your key points, but always relate back to your thesis.

Make Your Conclusion Seem Obvious
Restating your thesis in your conclusion (after having made all of your points and arguments in the body) can be persuasive. Aim to make your conclusion feel irrefutable (at least if it’s a persuasive essay).

Check Spelling
If your spelling is sloppy, it’s natural for your reader to assume your approach to writing the essay was too. This could harm the strength of an otherwise persuasive essay.

Check Grammar
Grammar is also important, for the same reason. It’s usually easy to pick up on dodgy grammar if you read your essay aloud. If you’re not a native English speaker, however, you might want to ask someone who is to check your essay.

Check Vocabulary
To avoid harming your persuasiveness and authority, it’s fundamentally important to use the right words. Overly obscure language can detract from the clarity of your argument, but if you feel you have to use it, then you better know what it means.

Cite a Web Page With No Author
How do you reference a web page that lists no author.
From the APA Style Blog .
When there is no author for a web page, the title moves to the first position of the reference entry like this:
All 33 Chile miners freed in flawless rescue. (2010, October 13). MSNBC. Retrieved from http://www.msnbc.msn.com/-id/39625809/ns/world_news-americas/
Cite in text the first few words of the reference list entry (usually the title) and the year. Use double quotation marks around the title or abbreviated title.: ("All 33 Chile Miners," 2010).
Note: Articles found on the web, like the example above, are not italicized in the reference entry and are not italicized but enclosed in quotations in the in-text citation, just like a newspaper or magazine article.
Reports found on the web would be italicized in the reference list, as in Publication Manual (6th ed.) Examples 31, 32, and 33 on pp. 205–206. They would also be italicized in the in-text citation, just like a book.

Writing for the Web
Websites require a unique style of writing. Novelists paint a picture with words. Reporters report the news with dramatic flair. Academics explain complex ideas in context with citations. Web content writers share information as succinctly as possible.
People consume websites differently than other forms of media: they don’t read; they skim. They will read only about 20 percent of the words on the average page.
How do you make your website easy for users to digest?
Do not say in 150 words what could be said in 75. Do not say in 75 words what could be said in 30.

Write simply
Long sentences with complex structures that endeavor to explain in complicated terms a topic that could otherwise be described in a more straightforward manner are best avoided. Use simple sentences.
Avoid “marketingese”
Neutral language is easier to read and understand than subjective and boastful text. Be clear and direct.
Use the “Inverted Pyramid” style of writing
Put the essential and most interesting information at the beginning. Include additional information in order of diminishing importance.
Use keywords
Use terms that are commonly used to describe your topic. Avoid using proprietary terms and abbreviations as much as is possible.
Use headings
Break up your text with brief but descriptive headings and subheadings so users can find information faster.
Break up different ideas into different paragraphs
Long, dense blocks of text are intimidating to readers. Several short paragraphs are preferable to a single long paragraph.
Make your text skim-friendly
Use bulleted lists in place of long series or text lists.
Highlight only as necessary
Use bold very sparingly to draw attention to an important point.
Use the proper case
Sentence case is much easier to read than uppercase. To emphasize an important point, use bold.
Make links easy to identify
Links should be a consistent color and style. Do not change the color of a link to make it stand out. Do not underline any text since it may be confused for a link.

Essay on Website Creation
Introduction.
The digital world is associated with modern technology and advanced systems across the globe. The use of the internet and the gadgets such as computers has increased efficiency in the day-to-day operations of our business and organizations. The World Wide Web (WWW) information is accessed through the internet. Several steps are involved in website design and creation.
Choosing or identifying a goal
Usually, in collaborative efforts with the customer or other stakeholders, the designer must first determine the website’s final aim. During this step of the web development services building process, you should consider the following questions: Who should visit the site? What are they hoping to find or do? Is this website’s primary goal to inform, sell or entertain? The website must communicate its core idea, or is it part of a larger branding strategy with its focus? If there are any competitors, how should this website be inspired by/different from them? This is the most critical step in web development. Suppose the brief doesn’t have clear objectives or a one-paragraph description of the expected outcomes. This will assist guide the design. Understand the website’s target demographic and the competition. Website goal identification tools include: a creative brief, Examining rivals or competitors, Brand features, and audience personas.
Define the scope
Scope creep is among the most widespread and challenging web design issues. On the one hand, the client has a specific aim in mind; on the other hand, this goal evolves or changes throughout the design process. This isn’t always bad for designers because it means more work. With no budget increase or timetable, the project can quickly become unfeasible. A Gantt chart showing a realistic timeframe with important milestones can assist define boundaries and deadlines. This helps designers and clients stay committed to the task and objectives at hand. Scope-defining tools include a Gantt chart and a contract.
Sitemap & wireframe design
A good sitemap is the cornerstone of every website. It clarifies the website’s information architecture and the relationships between pages and content pieces. In the same way, a house with no blueprint is impossible to build. And that rarely works. Next, research design inspiration and create a wireframe mockup. Wireframes assist in discovering possible sitemap issues and gaps by storing visual design and information aspects. A wireframe doesn’t incorporate any final design features, but it serves as a reference. It can also be used to format certain items. Wireframes can be created with software like Balsamiq or Web flow. I prefer the simplicity of paper and pencil. Sitemap and wireframe tools include: paper, pencil, sketch, web flow write maps, mockups, slick plan, mind node, Axure, and balsamic.
Creating content
You can begin writing content once your website’s architecture is complete. Content has two vital functions: Engaging and motivating, and optimizing search engines. Content engages users and encourages them to take activities that help a site achieve its goals. Neither the content (writing) nor its presentation (presentation) changes this (the typography and structural elements). Vacuous, lifeless text rarely holds readers’ attention. They are drawn in by short, quick, and engaging information. This can help keep your site light and entertaining even if they require a lot of content. Content also helps search engine visibility. Search engine optimization, or SEO, is innovating and improving information to rank well in search. A website’s performance depends on the accuracy of its keywords and key phrases. Google Keyword Planner is my go-to. You can use this tool to see how many people search for specific keywords and phrases. Like search engines, your content strategies should evolve. Google Trends can also help identify search phrases. Search engines more easily found highly optimized content, making the site easier to find. Most of the content is created by your client; however, you must advise them on which keywords and phrases to use. Excellent content creation tools include: google docs, quip, web-flow, content management system, dropbox paper, and other handy tools such as keyword planners.
Finally, design the site’s aesthetic style. Client-supplied branding components, colors, and logos commonly impact this stage of the design process. It’s the stage that a suitable site designer may shine. Images are playing a more significant part in website design now than ever. High-quality photographs not only look and feel professional but also transmit a point, seem to be mobile-friendly, and help develop trust. Visual content boosts clicks, engagement, and money. But consumers want imagery on a website. Images not only assist a page feel lighter and simpler to read, but they may also improve the text’s content and deliver critical information without the need to read. The site’s aesthetic design communicates and appeals to its users. It can make or break a site’s success. Visual elements tools include: Who are they? (Sketch, Illustrator, Photoshop,), collages of elements and mood boards and Style guides
Testing is ready once the website has all its aesthetics and content. Test each page thoroughly to ensure all links work and the site loads effectively on all browsers and devices. Minor coding errors can cause errors, and while finding and fixing them might be tedious, it is preferable to having a malfunctioning site. Revisit the page meta titles and descriptions. The sequence of the words in the meta title can affect how well a website performs in a search. Website testing tools include SEO Spider and the W3C Link Checker.
Launching a website is everyone’s favorite stage of the site design process. Expect nothing less than a mess. Some elements may still need to be corrected. Web design is a dynamic process that requires continual updating. Getting the appropriate balance of form and function is key to web design. You must utilize the right fonts, colors, and design motifs. But how visitors interact with your site is crucial. The launching stage is vital because it is not the conclusion of the process. The web is never finished, which is beautiful. Once the site is online, you can keep testing new features and functionality, tracking analytics, and refining your messaging.
An effective website must be created following due process. The website must incorporate all the necessary features to help enhance efficiency in operations. Keep testing the process and rectifying or modifying where need be.

Best Practices for Web Writing

Are you writing content for a University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) website? Use the following guidelines, tips, and (not-so-subtle) suggestions to create effective content, engage and inform your audiences, and meet your goals.
Write clear, simple, and effective content
- Content should be written in an easy-to-read, conversational style
- Always keep your audience, messages, personality, and goals in mind
Put the most important content in the first paragraph
- Readers scan pages, you don’t want them to miss your main idea
Chunk your content
- Cover only one topic per paragraph
- Write short paragraphs and minimize unnecessary words
- Sentence structure should be simple and varied
Use active voice instead of passive voice
- Yes: Tim taught the class.
- No: The class was taught by Tim.
Choose lists over long paragraphs
- Use lists to make your content easier to scan
Write Meaningful Headers
Headers allow readers to navigate content. Use the header to clearly describe the content in each paragraph.
Headers should:
- Be short and direct
- Be able to stand on their own and understood out of context
- Avoid jargon, abbreviations, cleverness, and technical terms
- Be search engine friendly – see “SEO Writing” below
Use Common Language
For SEO (Search Engine Optimization) use the same words and phrases your readers do. When creating page titles, headers, list items, and links, choose keywords carefully and use them consistently. This practice reinforces keywords relevancy for search engines.
Readers expect a personal, upbeat tone in web writing. They find bureaucratic writing offensive and out-of-place and ignore the message it's trying to convey.
To avoid bureaucratic language, turn the tone down a notch. Search out and destroy jargon. Use active voice. Always try to write in first or second person.
Keep it Short
Web writing needs to be much shorter than other kinds of writing. Research shows that people scan web text, rather than read every word. Make it easy for your users to scan for information quickly. A paragraph should consist of 70 words or less.
Writing for the web is NOT the same as writing for a print publication. A page on the web should be half the length of a similar print document.
300-700 words is a reasonable average length for any web content.
What if you have more than 700 words? Break your content into sections, leading readers to specific portions of the text as much as possible. It’s your job as a web author to guide your audience to the content you want them to consume.
Don’t waste space welcoming people to your page. There is no need – most users ignore welcome text as filler. Get to the meat – that’s what they came for.
Subheadlines, Lists, and Scanning
On average, users read about 20 percent of your content per page.
What should you do? Be concise. Be relevant. Use short sentences and action verbs, and cut inessential text without sacrificing your identity.
Along with short, easy-to-read blocks of text, you also should make good use of font size, lists, and subheadlines. These elements help guide readers' eyes toward the most important content, and make it easier to absorb large content.
Use a bulleted list to break up content. Write a short sentence and support it with bullet points. Do not end sentences in a bulleted list with a period – periods stop the eye from scanning.
Use Links Effectively
Link, link, and link to relevant information. If you mention the UM shuttle , link to it. If you want to include someone’s email address, link their name. If you mention a faculty member, link to their bio page.
Don’t make people go and search for something you mention if it already has a page somewhere.
The average time new visitors spend on any one page is around 30 seconds. Take advantage of that short attention span by providing lots of relevant links to explore.
Web usability experts discourage the use of the phrase "click here" for links. Make your links contextual. Use part of your sentence or phrase as the link. Research shows that users like them to be 4-8 words in length.

Keep it simple. Don't underline or use bold, italics, headings, and indentations unnecessarily. They may be difficult to read from the users' view.
Structure Your Content Like an "Inverted Pyramid" on Top-Level Pages
What’s an inverted pyramid? It’s a writing style where you put your most important information first.
Load the most important information at the top of the page and at the top level of your site. Often this is a few sentences or bullet points. Please refer to the type hierarchy for formatting guidance, a number of type styles have been provided to enhance your inverted pyramid.
Content that requires users to scroll vertically loses up to 80 percent of its readership.
Your introductory sentences or paragraphs for any key landing pages are prime real estate for your messages.
The goal is to capture the interest of site visitors. Save the more specialized and lengthy pages for deeper levels of the site.
Search Engine Optimized (SEO) Writing
Most users visit a web page for 10-15 seconds. In that brief time, 80 percent will skim the page for keywords they already have in mind. Therefore, before you create content, it’s important to understand your audience and anticipate what content and keywords they’re trying to find.
When a user conducts a search on a search engine, the database is queried to identify all the pages that include those words on the page and/or in the links pointing to that page. If your page does not include the words the user was searching for, it is unlikely that your page will rank well, if at all.
The same is true when none of the links to that page include the words that the user used in their search.
Once pages have been identified, search engines order the results according to relevance. Relevance can be determined based on dozens and dozens of criteria, such as keyword prominence (how often your keywords appear on a page, and where they appear).
Keep Your Content Fresh
Outdated web content will confuse your users and make you look lazy. It also degrades the user's trust in your information.
Add fresh content (text, images, video) as often as possible. Make sure your staff and contact information is up-to-date and remove past events from your site.
Whenever possible, work with a designer when artwork is required.
Use a header image relevant to your subject matter.

Internet Technology: Creating a Website
Introduction, creation of a website.
This paper is set to explain the way the internet has changed lives and its effect on the pace at which businesses are conducted all over the world today. It also highlights the benefits and problems posed by its use. Internet is about e-commerce and conduct of business which includes purchasing and selling of goods and services. It has also been used in marketing, advertisement, and public relations between people, companies, corporations, and organizations. It creates awareness and provides free information to clients, academicians, and other members of society. It has increased awareness and has endowed better judgment to clients.
The worldwide website has been used to connect the producer, supplier, consumer, and government. The major purpose of the creation of websites is to increase the speed of carrying out business transactions. Most companies choose to create their websites by following the following easy steps. This has led to e-commerce that has increased business transactions.
When creating a website, one should take into consideration what his business is about. This should lead one into getting a domain name. A domain name should be got by the company and should focus on what it markets or what the company is about. For example, if a company sells paintings then its domain name could be www.mypainting.co.uk. Then one should obtain a web space from hosting companies. Webspace is space on a computer owned by a hosting company. Most hosting companies rent webspace to companies that need it at a certain fee per year. Photos and images concerning the company are posted and linked. The domain name is registered online and this is done by the same hosting company.
While designing a website, several factors should be taken into consideration. Since most websites are designed for clients/ users they should be designed to be user-friendly. The speed of accessing this website should be fast.
This can be achieved by reducing the size of files, avoiding big graphics and images. Speed can also be improved by the use of cascading style sheets and much of it should be put into hypertext makeup language. (Html)The web pages designed should match the pages used in advertising in the media. The technical element of writing using Javascript should also be taken into account.
Navigation should be made easy by consistently arranging files according to their importance and making them clear. Web accessibility is important and it should cater to people with mild problems like color blindness, poor eyesight, blindness. There should be tools that fit all clients. Those that are physically impaired deaf & blind should have navigation tools that make accessibility easy.
It is advisable to set computer resolutions at a minimum of 640×480 pixels and a maximum of 1280×1024 pixels. The Colour used should match. It should not be overcrowded. Headlines should be highlighted to increase visibility. Fonts of adequate size should be used so that the users should not strain to read. The language of expression should be easy to understand and should not be offensive.
When implementing an e-commerce website, the human factor should be considered. Though most companies consider minimizing the costs involved in making a website, they fail to recognize the usability of the website by the end-user. It should be marketable and accepted by the end-user. It should increase the efficiency of user interface design. The experience earned by the user is the major key to achieving its acceptability. Every company should have a webmaster that will update the website on the latest information regularly.
To make your website popular, one can use email, posters, and flyers to advertise. One should also consider user experience and what their comments are about it. Post-sales support should be offered. A company can also offer incentives like free shipping and also discounts to increase its sales. One should display his phone number for easy phone orders. Questions asked frequently should be taken into consideration. Email addresses of the company should also be provided for easy contact by the clients.
Websites should be secured by having passwords. This can be got by clients after they call the company’s customer care service. Hackers provide a major threat to the existence and efficiency of websites. Some hackers may post error messages as part of dirty campaigns to scare away clients. Since websites are open to anyone other companies could provide the same service or products at lower prices reducing their profits. Breaching of the security of clients should not be done through most of them cannot pass their credit card details. Most companies have used so much money to protect their websites from corporate espionage and hackers.
A domain name that focuses on the company deals with is very important. People accessing the website do not have to go through a hard time looking for what they want. An example is youtube. Its domain name youtube has helped with marketing because it is designed for airing anyone’s views. This name is memorable and personal to some level. It focuses on you; the user.
On the positive side, eCommerce has increased sales for most companies because placing orders is fast. Information is easily accessible to clients. Society has become more informed due to increased awareness. Literacy levels have increased because of the eagerness of many to learn more from the websites. Suppliers and customers of the company have more information and can get their services and goods fast. The operation capital of most companies especially in marketing and advertising has been reduced.
In addition, the internet has also some detriments. Many a client can’t come to terms with trusting it. They find it risky to transact business with a company that they have not seen. Accessing the Internet in third-world countries is low due to poor infrastructure, poverty, and illiteracy. In some countries, some information is censured and sometimes companies are fined. This increases their operating costs. Some websites foster the sale of illicit drugs and lead to an increase in suicidal tendencies among young people.
In my opinion, the internet is good since it has increased the volume and pace of trading globally, reduced hurdles in communication making the world a global village.

Assessing the Quality of Web Sites
Websites play an important role in representing a business or organization. They help welcome the web audience by providing informative information that would encourage visitors to come back, make a purchase, and learn more behind its purpose. A website serves multiple purposes but when you need information or want help you need a reputable source. This is where the quality of content on a website comes into play. Nowadays, more people are paying attention to what a website looks like, memorable content with a purpose, and remembering content that makes a poor website.
Quality websites may vary in presentation but they can offer important details that help you remember it is source you can trust. There are things such as a good logo, color scheme, readability and user-friendly that all come into play. When these things are not in sync it can bring down the quality of content. Written content should be free from errors and have proper grammar, punctuation, and solid sentence and paragraph structure. Depending on the industry the website should provide in-depth information that would encourage visitors to come back again.
The quality of pictures, feedback comments, and descriptions provided for services and products should also be reviewed. A website should provide clear information easy to understand and follow. Depending on the purpose or reason for the website, information should be updated on a regular basis to encourage and increase site traffic. There are different layouts and designs a website can have, but they should be easy to understand without looking too busy or complex. Links should work and go to corresponding information as such; any links that are broken or go to another page that is no longer active can bring down creditability of the website.
Websites of good quality will be more memorable to visitors. This can be anything from color, pictures, video content and written content. While it may not seem obvious, more people are recognizing websites and their content in determining overall quality. Some websites that may have a good visual appeal may not offer good content, and vice versa. Quality web content is important for visitors and those who own the website. Reputations are built on good quality web content. Yet, there are websites with poor quality content that have no problem getting plenty of traffic, depending on the content and the audience they are trying to attract.
