Nestlé publishes 2020 Annual Report, spotlights sustainability at the Annual General Meeting

Nestlé today published its 2020 Annual Report. The report highlights the company’s financial and non-financial performance for the year and gives an update on strategy, innovation, digitalization and sustainability.

Nestlé has also sent the Annual General Meeting (AGM) invitation and agenda to shareholders.

2020 Annual Report Despite the challenges of COVID-19 in 2020, Nestlé delivered strong results, achieving improvements in organic sales growth, profitability and capital efficiency for the third year in a row. Nestlé also continued to make progress on its portfolio transformation through targeted acquisitions and divestments that focus on attractive, high-growth businesses.

A key contributor to Nestlé's growth is its consumer-driven innovation that also strives to reduce the company's environmental footprint. Some examples highlighted in the report include the launch of Sensational Vuna , a plant-based tuna alternative, and the increased use of paper packaging for brands such as Maggi . The company further reduced the average time to market of such innovative products by another 10% and increased the number of multi-market launches by 23%.

Nestlé's continued digital transformation enabled it to accelerate growth and better engage with consumers in a year that saw a surge in online shopping. Nestlé's e-commerce sales grew by 48.4% and accounted for 12.8% of total Group sales in 2020. Additionally, more than 60% of all of the company’s digital media campaigns used a data-driven, audience-first approach to personalize messaging to consumers.

In the Creating Shared Value (CSV) section of the report, Nestlé highlights that it has fully achieved 28 of the 36 commitments it had previously defined to support the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Those commitments focus on promoting healthier lives, improving livelihoods and protecting and restoring the environment. The full CSV and Sustainability Report will be published on March 23.

The full Annual Report contains Nestlé's Annual Review as well as the Corporate Governance & Compensation Reports and the Financial Statements, which were published on February 18, 2021.

Read about these topics and more in the Annual Report

Annual General Meeting and Sustainability In addition to the traditional AGM agenda items, Nestlé will ask its shareholders to support its recently published climate roadmap in an advisory vote at this year’s meeting. In December 2020, the company published its detailed, time-bound plan for cutting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in half by 2030 and for achieving net zero emissions by 2050. The reporting of non-financial performance is becoming increasingly important, and as previously announced , the company believes that shareholders should have a say on Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) matters. Nestlé welcomes upcoming changes to Swiss legislation in this area. In the interim, the Board of Directors is seeking the support from shareholders on its climate roadmap.

Each year at the AGM, shareholders have the opportunity to vote on the total compensation of Nestlé's Board of Directors and Executive Board. This year, Nestlé is changing the structure of Executive Board members' short-term bonus. Fifteen percent of that bonus will now be linked to the achievement of ESG-related objectives. The Nestlé Board of Directors sets those objectives at the beginning of each year, in line with the company's strategy.

As already communicated , Nestlé is also splitting the existing Nomination and Sustainability Committee into a separate Nomination Committee and a focused Sustainability Committee. This reflects the importance of sustainability in Nestlé's corporate governance and allows Board members to dedicate more time, focus and action on each of these important topics.

Ahead of the upcoming AGM on April 15, Nestlé will also publish its first Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) Report . The TCFD report assesses the strength and resilience of the company's strategy and business model under different climate scenarios.

Nestlé publishes its 2021 Annual Report alongside its Creating Shared Value and Sustainability Report

[Ad hoc announcement pursuant to art. 53 SIX Listing Rules]

This press release is also available in Français (pdf) and Deutsch (pdf)

.............

Vevey, March 8, 2022

Today, Nestlé published its 2021 Annual Report as well as its Creating Shared Value and Sustainability Report. The publications highlight how consumer-centric, fast-paced innovation, digitalization and a focus on sustainability contribute to long-term value creation.

Nestlé has also published the Annual General Meeting ( AGM ) agenda.

Nestlé has the ability to deliver and scale meaningful innovations that meet changing consumer tastes, respond to the growing interest worldwide in nutritional health solutions and contribute to sustainability. The Annual Review highlights examples in some of the company’s fastest-growing categories. In Health Science, Nestlé developed new nutritional solutions for diabetes, cardiovascular and other medical conditions. For example, Nutren GlucoSmart was launched in Malaysia and helps support healthy glucose levels. Nestlé uses that same know-how to develop solutions for pets too. Pro Plan Cardio Care was launched in 2021 to slow the progression of heart disease in dogs. In coffee, the company discovered two new varieties that produce up to 50% higher yields per tree versus standard varieties and enable an up to 30% reduction in the carbon footprint on the farm. One of those varieties is now being grown by farmers in Latin America for use in Nescafé .

Strong digital capabilities are an important growth driver, and Nestlé focuses on providing consumers with holistic online brand experiences. The company grew its e-commerce sales by another 15.1%, increasing e-commerce’s share of total Group sales to 14.3% in 2021. Nestlé further deployed its connected operations technology last year, with more than 100 sites now benefitting from a more connected workforce, better visibility across the entire production process and local flexibility. In a year that saw supply chain constraints, Nestlé was able to identify changes in demand and supply in real time and deal with issues much faster.

In the Creating Shared Value (CSV) section of the Annual Review and in the full CSV and Sustainability Report, Nestlé explains how it is supporting the just transition towards climate-friendly and nature-positive food systems. The company is delivering on its climate roadmap and reports that it has passed peak carbon levels. For the last two consecutive years, Nestlé has reduced its absolute greenhouse gas emissions, even while its business volume has grown significantly. Specifically, it has achieved a reduction of 4.0 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents, for instance, by switching to renewable electricity, or encouraging the use of natural fertilizers in farming. And it has initiated removals of 9.7 million tonnes of CO2 equivalents through nature-based solutions within its value chain.

Sugar: for Nestlé, not all babies are equal

Zurich, Lausanne, 17. April 2024

  • Kritischer Konsum

annual report nestle

Fifty years after the infant formula scandal, Nestlé  claims to have learned from the past while doing everything it can to keep its world leadership in infant nutrition. The food giant controls 20 percent of the baby-food market, valued at nearly $70 billion. With more than $2.5 billion in world sales in 2022, Cerelac and Nido are some of Nestlé’s best-selling baby-food brands in low- and middle-income countries. The multinational aggressively advertises these products as essential to children’s healthy development in its main markets in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

The results of the investigation “ How Nestlé gets children hooked on sugar in lower-income countries ” tells a completely different story. Public Eye and IBFAN scrutinized around 150 products sold by the food giant in lower-income countries. Almost all the Cerelac infant cereals examined contain added sugar – nearly 4 grams per serving on average, equal to roughly a sugar cube – although they are targeted at babies from six months of age. The highest amount – 7.3 grams per serving – was detected in a product  sold in the Philippines. Most of the Nido powdered-milk products for young children from one to three years old examined also contain added sugar – almost two grams per serving on average. The maximum value (5.3 grams) was detected in a product sold in Panama. In Switzerland and in Nestlé’s main European markets, such products are sold without added sugar.

The paediatricians and child nutrition experts interviewed by Public Eye denounce a double standard that is unjustifiable and problematic from an ethical and public health perspective, particularly in view of  the obesity epidemic affecting low-income countries. The WHO warns that exposure to sugar early in life can create a life-long preference for sugary products that increases the risk of developing obesity and other chronic illnesses. Since 2022, the UN agency is calling for a ban on added sugar in products for babies and young children under three years of age.

Whereas Nestlé recommends publicly to avoid baby foods that contain added sugar, it takes advantage of the weakness of existing regulations to continue selling such products in lower-income countries. Furthermore, the investigation by Public Eye and IBFAN shows that the Swiss multinational uses misleading marketing strategies, such as utilizing medical professionals and social media influencers to win the trust of parents in its products. A petition launched today demands that Nestlé put an end to these dangerous practices and stop adding sugar in products for babies and young children under three years old, in every part of the world.
