“I can’t imagine a more versatile resource than Harvard Business Publishing - everything from cases, videos to simulations are available. The advantage of teaching with HBP materials is twofold: ease of mind for the faculty and credibility for the students.”
“After 35 years as an academic, I have come to the conclusion that there is a magic in the way Harvard cases are written. Cases go from specific to general, to show students that business situations are amenable to hardheaded analysis that then generalize to larger theoretical insights. The students love it!”
“For almost 25 years, I’ve used HBP’s cases, articles and simulations in my MBA classes. The material is always updated, so that new company stories are featured alongside some of the most classic articles.”

  • FAQ:  How do I find Harvard Business School Case Studies that have been published in the Harvard Business Review (via Business Source Complete)?

How to search: For the first 3 databases, in the advanced search interface, limit your "document type" to "case study", then click the "full text" box. In the search boxes, include the topic or company you're researching. For Ebook Central, put "case stud*" in one of the advanced search boxes and make sure it is searching the "title". (The asterisk will retrieve books that mention "case study" or "case studies" in their titles.) Include your topic or company of interest in the remaining search box. Some case studies in these databases will not be structured in a traditional business case format.

Case Studies from the Library Catalog

Search the  Library Catalog (BobCat) to locate books and ebooks that contain case studies.  Search for "case studies" AND a keyword relevant to your research topic.  Below are some results from a sample search of "case studies" AND "finance":

Instructor Case Study FAQs

Q: Can I use the library's case study materials in my course, as a course reserve? A: Yes, all of the cases in our subscription platforms, including the Harvard Case Study Collection, may be used in your course and as course reserves.

Q: How do I gain access to case-specific teaching notes? A: Directions may be found in the descriptions for each product (above).

Q: Why does the library not have access to all HBS cases? A: Harvard Business Publishing sells only a small portion of its overall case study products to academic libraries via a third party (EBSCO). Their primary selling strategy is direct-to-student.

Q: Can I request Harvard cases via the library's Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service? A: Typically no. Contemporary case studies are not available via ILL due to how they are licensed by Harvard for use by only one individual. Very rarely, an old case may be available via ILL, but this is uncommon.

Q: I heard that faculty get free Harvard case content access. Where do I sign up? A: Faculty from any major college or university can sign up for a Harvard Business Publishing Educator account . These accounts give professors free access to most case study content - after they confirm your faculty standing - in order for you to evaluate materials for use in your class. Students must still purchase any materials assigned by for your course, or access it via the library's subscriptions (if available). Please note that Educator accounts are not affiliated with the library: we cannot grant access.

Q: I want to assign an HBS case study that is not part of the library's pre-existing subscription. Can you purchase it for my students? A: Unfortunately, no. Such cases must be purchased individually. You may wish to contact your department head to see if funds are available to purchase on behalf of your class.

Green Concrete: Decarbonizing Construction with Recycled Glass

The first of a series on decarbonizing the roots of value chains, where we’re looking deep into supply chains that serve many industries, this episode focuses on concrete. Concrete is one of the world’s most popular materials, and it accounts for nearly 8% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, most of which comes from cement– the glue that binds conventional forms of concrete. We focus on one type of green concrete produced by Urban Mining Industries that replaces half of the cement with recycled glass that makes its product much less carbon intensive. We present this story through an episode of the HBR Cold Call podcast, where host Brian Kenny interviews HBS professors Shirley Lu and Bob Kaplan. They discuss how Harvard is pilot testing the use of green concrete in its current construction projects as part of the university’s efforts to reduce its carbon footprint. They’ll also discuss various methods to measure carbon emissions, including the e-liability approach Bob Kaplan lays out in a recent Harvard Business Review article.

Sustaining a Legacy of Giving in Turkey

Özyeğin Social Investments was founded by Hüsnü Özyeğin, one of Turkey's most successful entrepreneurs, with a focus on education, health, gender equality, rural development, and disaster relief in Turkey. The company and the Özyeğin family have spent decades serving and improving communities in need. Their efforts led to the creation of one of Turkey’s top universities, the establishment of schools and rehabilitation centers, post 2023 earthquake humanitarian shelter and facilities, nationwide campaigns, and an internationally recognized educational training initiative for young children, among other achievements. Harvard Business School senior lecturer Christina Wing and Murat Özyeğin discuss how the company is a model for making a significant impact across multiple sectors of society through giving and how that legacy can be sustained in the future, in the case, “Özyeğin Social Investments: A Legacy of Giving."

Cases & Case Studies

The definition of "Case Study" varies from publication to publication. The "case studies" in traditional journals and books are not necessarily the same as commercial "cases" from publishers like Harvard Business School Publishing.

The Library does  NOT  collect commercial cases (except for those from the SAGE Business Cases listed above) due to licensing restrictions imposed by the publishers. Each student must pay for their own copies. To find and use non-SAGE commercial cases, go to Harvard Business Publishing. By  registering for a free educator account , you can create an online course folder to provide online access to specific cases (with "up to 60% off" for students).

  • Harvard Business Publishing - Cases Includes cases from multiple institutions like Harvard, Darden, Stanford, Ivey, and more.
  • The Case Centre Another clearinghouse of cases. Many cases are available on both Harvard Business Publishing and Case Centre.

You can also search for freely available case studies in the resources mentioned below.

Policy Here , and regarding class use of cases and HBR articles:

... we prohibit the posting of cases, articles, or chapters on “e-reserve” course pages for student access, as well as in “electronic coursepacks” that link to our digitized content and content postings on course management systems such as WebCT or Blackboard. Such unauthorized postings are equivalent to distributing our copyrighted content to students without permission, which infringes that copyright. This is so even if the content is being used for the first time and is password-protected, accessible only to students in the course, and taken down at the end of the course.

Harvard Business Review

HBR articles in Business Source Premier (BSP, an EBSCOhost database) CANNOT be used for teaching purposes.

Harvard Business Review Notice of Use Restrictions, May 2009:

Harvard Business Review and Harvard Business Publishing Newsletter content on EBSCOhost is licensed for the private individual use of authorized EBSCOhost users.  It is not intended for use as assigned course material in academic institutions  nor as corporate learning or training materials in businesses. Academic licensees may not use this content in electronic reserves, electronic course packs, persistent linking from syllabi or by any other means of incorporating the content into course resources. Business licensees may not host this content on learning management systems or use persistent linking or other means to incorporate the content into learning management systems. Harvard Business Publishing will be pleased to grant permission to make this content available through such means. For rates and permission, contact [email protected].

That means an instructor should NOT do the following with HBR articles in BSP: 1) uploading PDFs, or 2) providing links in syllabus or Canvas, or 3) verbally assigning specific HBR articles during class. The instructor needs to set up an educator's account on the Harvard website and create a course folder containing the HBR articles, then share the course folder link with students who have to pay for the articles.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why can't instructors use HBR articles since they are available in Business Source Premier? -- It's HBP's policy. The articles in Business Source Premier are for "research" only; articles used for "teaching purposes" are not covered by the license and not free to the students. This applies to linking to articles available for free on the hbr.org website. They don't even allow you to link to articles on their site if the articles are for "class use". This is what the HBR Permission Team conveyed in an email in March 2024:

Please note individuals are authorized to send a direct link of an HBR article at the hbr.org site to a friend or colleague for a Harvard Business Review they think their colleague may (or may not) be interested in, however, Harvard Business Publishing does not authorize corporate / institutional direct url linking to specific HBR articles at the hbr.org site.

Can students use Business Source Premier on their own and cite HBR articles in their papers or coursework? -- Yes, if they are doing research and find these articles serendipitously.

Can I just tell students to find these articles without linking to them? -- No, if the students are told to find them for a class, the articles are used for "teaching." HBP does track the usage of HBR and a sudden increase in the search and download of a specific article will be flagged as violation.

What are my options if I want to link to articles for a class so students can read them for free? -- If the HBR article is also in one of the HBR's 10 Must Reads ebooks , you can link to the ebook. To find out if an article is in the ebooks, just do a search by the article title in the library catalog.

-- Articles from other journals PSU Library subscribes to can be used as course materials, whether you put them on Course Reserves , link to them in your course page , or verbally assign them as required reading. The Library is already paying for these resources so your students can read them without any additional cost.

Who can provide more information regarding the online course folder? -- I recommend contacting HBP directly .

What else do I need to know about HBR articles in BSP?

-- Starting 8/1/2013, Harvard Business Publishing has restricted access to  HBR's 500 most popular articles  (initial list -- titles change over time) to "read-only" in BSP. These articles cannot be printed or linked to from a persistent link. You can still search for them in BSP, download the PDF, or email the PDF to yourself.

-- How do I know it's one of those articles?

  • In the BSP article record you will see this message:  The publisher offers limited access to this article. The full text cannot be printed or saved.   Solution: There is nothing you can do. Just read it online.
  • If you see this message in BSP through an external link (e.g., from searching the library catalog): " The publisher offers limited access to this article. The full text cannot be viewed from a persistent link. " Solution: do a new search directly in BSP and you will find the full text.

MNC Whispering

The MNC Whispering video case collection is a series of open-source video cases aimed to bring a more attractive education and training to international business (IB), with a new generation of students who are visually oriented, prefer video over text, and use virtual rather than face-to-face communications.

MNC Whispering uses the original methodology developed and used by Brands Whisper’g®, expanding and testing it specifically for the IB area.

The cases are co-created between academics and businesses, and narrated by international executives explaining their problems and ‘whispering’ their solutions.

As part of an Erasmus+ Project called Video Case Library 4 International Business (VCL4IB) (KA203 Project 2018-1-BE02-KA203-046832), funded by the European Union, the collection is an open accessed web and video-based one. The project partners KU Leuven (Belgium), University of Leeds (UK), University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), Poznan University of Economics and Business (Poland), and El Izi Communications Consultancy UK Limited have created an interesting line-up of companies. They come from various backgrounds, operating in different industries, and tackling many of the IB problems that firms encounter when internationalising.

An exciting and up-to-date collection, each video case covers a number of IB topics. In this collection, there are 14 video cases and 21 knowledge clips which were produced between 2019-2021. The collection is designed to cover many of the IB topics that feature in regular textbooks. Yet, all information is delivered in a video format, with each chapter being covered with real life cases. Following each video case, one or more knowledge clips are added to relate the video cases to academic insights, theories and frameworks. These knowledge clips can be used as part of a class discussion, or as study material linking the specific case to theory.

The third group – Sustainable Development Goals cases – derive from RSM’s initiative to embed SDGs in its curriculum. These cases explore the complexity of sustainable development, requiring students to go beyond their own specialisations in order to understand the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainability.

  1. Where can I find free case studies? : r/startups

Just reading case studies on your own is like trying to learn math just by doing problem sets without reading the theory first. 2. Why don't business schools make their own case studies? : r/MBA

Feisty-Ad6582. • 4 mo. ago. HBS owns 70% of the market share on business school case studies. HBS is also the only top business school that hire their own PhD candidates and a large reason why is to support that publishing arm. (Since most PhD candidates do case work production in their candidacy and are pre-trained.)

  3. Cases

Akshay Rao. After 35 years as an academic, I have come to the conclusion that there is a magic in the way Harvard cases are written. Cases go from specific to general, to show students that business situations are amenable to hard headed analysis that then generalize to larger theoretical insights.
