Watch Lizzo Make ‘Juice,’ a Pop Anthem as Irresistible as She Is

How a flute-playing, twerking, social-media-dominating rapper and singer built a song that packs all her joy and charm into three danceable minutes..

“Hey.” “Oh, hi.” “How’s it going?” “Why do you got this old professional background?” “Why do you have this professional hair?” “O.K. I look like this everyday, bitch. Singing: “Mirror, mirror on the wall, don’t say it ’cause I know I’m cute. Ooh, baby. Louis down to my drawers, LV all on my shoes. Ooh, baby. I be drippin’ so much sauce, gotta been lookin’ like Ragu. Lit up like a crystal ball. That’s cool, baby. So is you.” “Hello. Snowed in, so let’s go. ‘Empire State of Mind.’ [flute music] My story begins in Houston, Tex. I was a flute player and went to college for music performance. [flute music] “I was really excited about writing. I would write raps.” Rapping: “Ain’t got no time for the C-3P0, wookie. Looky here. Three cheers for the woman of the year — me!” “When did Lizzo Lizzo sort of crystalize?” “I wrote a song called ‘My Skin.’” Singing: “I woke up in this. I woke up in this, in my skin.” “And people were just so shocked that, you know, in 2014, this big black girl was saying, I’m in love with myself. I love my skin. I was like, why is this such a shocker to y’all? I’m going to just talk about this [expletive] all the time until you get used to it.” “Tell me about meeting Lizzo and what was your first impression of her?” “Honestly, my first impression was, yo, this big girl don’t give a [expletive], bro. She hard! She hard, bro.” “Bitch!” [flute music] “I was just drawn to her — you know, her — I don’t know what the word is.” [flute music] “Do you remember what the studio was like on the day you guys started ‘Juice’?” “We had made a lot of demos. We had made a lot of songs. And I was getting a little tired.” “I remember, she was like — “ “Ricky, I want you to play a song that is a [expletive] undeniable hit. And he was like, all right, I think this is it. We were like, bah! And it was just the part. It was the — with the drums.” [imitates music] “I was so specifically trying to, like, find the Prince-Bowie etc., like, thing.” “It made me want to dance. It made me feel like, yo, this has a throwback feel, but they definitely made it in 2019.” “The way he works is, he’ll just kind of sit there for a while.” “I’m just sitting in a chair, laid back. And the mic is, like, literally right here. And I said, ‘Mirror, mirror, on the wall, don’t say it ‘cause I know I’m cute. Ooh, baby.” “I thought that was really cute and cool. But I was like, you know, keep going.” “I said, I woke up like this. I ain’t even got to try. She was like — she was like, man, somebody said that already.” Singing: “I woke up like this.” “But it’s not just about waking up pretty. What do we really mean underneath that? I was born like this.” “And I was like, that’s even [expletive] better.” “I was born like this means I love me for me, no matter what makeup I have on, what weave I have on, whether I got my lash extensions on or not.” “I was like, I think we need a word. What’s the word? The word that — you know, we was like, yo, juice.” “I think juice is kind of freaky. I think juice is kind of spiritual and special. I think — I think it’s black [expletive]. [laughs] “All right.” “We recorded the demo. And then when we started working on it with Lizzo, I always work on the key with the artists to get the sweet spot, vocally.” “She went straight in the booth and started recording it. And as soon as I heard her sing — ” Singing: “Mirror, mirror on the wall, don’t say it, ’cause I know I’m cute.” “I was like, oh, [expletive], we out of here. This [expletive] is hard as [expletive]. This [expletive] is hard as [expletive].” “Sometimes, when I’m in a session, and an artist sings one line, I can’t help but jump on the talkback and be like, this is going to be crazy!” Singing: “I’m like chardonnay, get better over time. Heard you say I’m not the baddest bitch, you lie.” “I laugh in the track and I laugh live. I just think that [expletive] is funny. I be like, bitch, you’re lying.” Singing: “Ain’t my fault that I’m out here gettin’ loose. Gotta blame it on the goose. Gotta blame it on my juice, baby.” “I texted Ricky, like, after I was done recording. I just texted him, ‘emotional,’ because it was. The song was really, really simple before. And Ricky spent a lot of time being a muso on it and beefed it up.” “So, this is sort of the control room. Here are some toys, mostly synthesizers, early ’70s, early ’80s. We have basically two horn parts.” “I will say I’m a very horny artist. [laughs] “As it went on, there’s, like, some real kind of, like, ’80s electro. [singing] “You have this kind of magic thing that happens. It’s almost, like, 2019, like, vintage sounds, which is just, like, pitch-shifting something to death, and then it sounds, like, warbly and [expletive] up. Oh, I totally forgot. One of the most important keyboard parts, that Lizzo actually came up with — ” “Tell me about the decision to get Lizzo’s friends to come in and record backup.” “Oh, man. That was amazing. I think the first person that threw that up was Theron.” “We needed some gang vocals, you know? I wanted, like, a group of girls in there.” “And I was like, even better, I can get my girls in here.” “I was like, hell [expletive] yeah. That’s what I need. So like, three or four of her best friends came to the studio, and they were just in the booth, like lit.” Singing: “That’s how I roll. If I’m shining, everybody gonna shine. Yeah, I’m gold. I was born like this. Don’t even gotta try. Now you know. I’m like chardonnay, get better over time. So, you know.” “This was a case where it was like, this is bananas, like, how much it was adding.” “It’s the little details like that that make a song from a good song to a magical moment.” Singing: “It ain’t my fault that I’m out here gettin’ loose. Gotta blame it on the goose. Gotta blame it on my juice, baby. It ain’t my fault that I’m out here making news. I’m the pudding in the proof. Gotta blame it on my juice.” “You know what it felt like? It felt like fun. I just kept saying, whatever we do, I want people to hear it, and I want people to smile.” “It honestly just feels so, so super joyful, listening to it back.” Singing: “It ain’t my fault that I’m out here gettin’ — I love this song. It’s like, I can’t not sing the whole thing.” “What were your, like, high school bus bars like?” “Oh, my God. It was always: Man, what’s the deal? Man, I’m coming through. Coming down chilly, banging on a screw. It’s your girl, Lizzo.” [laughs]

Diary of a Song

the lit juice

Lizzo needed a defining anthem. She found one in “Juice.”

A 30-year-old singer, rapper, dancer and flutist, the artist born Melissa Jefferson has become a social media star in recent years, winning over audiences with her absurdist humor, outsize personality and messages of body positivity and black self-love. But as she moved from an underground figure to something more mainstream — her Atlantic Records full-length debut, “Cuz I Love You,” was released on Friday — Lizzo and her collaborators wanted to pack all of her joy and charm into a single three-minute musical package.

So one day in the studio with the producer Ricky Reed (Kesha, Halsey, Jason Derulo) and the songwriter Theron Thomas, who has written hits with Rihanna and Beyoncé, Lizzo demanded an undeniable smash. Reed pulled up an old demo he had written, with guitars reminiscent of Prince and David Bowie, and Lizzo and Thomas got straight to writing an infectious string of catchphrases, beginning with a playful declaration: “Mirror, mirror on the wall/don’t say it, ‘cause I know I’m cute.”

The track became “Juice,” a retro-funk explosion à la “Uptown Funk” that is also unmistakably Lizzo, with all of the pizazz and self-confidence that entails. The song’s gradual rise in popularity has included performances on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and “The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon,” along with placements in the final season of “Broad City” and the trailer for “Long Shot,” starring Charlize Theron and Seth Rogen. Its music video — which features Lizzo referencing an array of throwback pop-culture moments — has been viewed more than 8.5 million times on YouTube.

In the “Diary of a Song” episode above, Lizzo, Reed and Thomas discuss the making of the track — including a cherry-on-top cameo from Lizzo’s best friends singing backup vocals — and what it takes to write a song that feels modern, but could also get your grandmother dancing at a wedding.

“Diary of a Song” provides an up-close, behind-the-scenes look at how pop music is made today, using archival material — voice memos, demo versions, text messages, emails, interviews and more — to tell the story behind the track. Subscribe to our YouTube channel .

The REAL Long Island Iced Tea

There are a few impostors out there that claim to be Long Island Iced Teas. In actuality, there is only one correct way to make a LIIT... and this is it!

One thing must be cleared up about the Long Island Iced Tea straight away: It is living a lie. For starters, it's not entirely clear that it's actually from Long Island. That's debatable. But, folks, it is most assuredly not tea . You will not find a drop of tea in this cocktail. But don't hold that against it. Read on to learn how to make this 5-star recipe for Long Island Iced Tea.

What's In a Long Island Iced Tea?

Some people have asked, does the Long Island iced tea have alcohol in it? Boy does it ever!

The Long Island iced tea is the liquor-cabinet equivalent of what the kids once called a "suicide soda" (a big ol' splash of every drink from the soda fountain into one enormous ice-filled cup). On the face of it, the Long Island Iced tea doesn't seem tenable: Vodka, rum, gin, tequila, triple sec — all mingling in the same cocktail glass, tempered only by a dash of sweet and sour mix and a splash of cola. Sounds like trouble. And obviously it can be.

But it's undisputable, this cocktail proves itself an unlikely success, and a prime example of when the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Tossing all of these strong spirits together somehow softens the edges off of each individual spirit. It's a marvel of science, frankly. Somehow this cocktail, seemingly of odds and ends from the liquor cabinet, manages the impossible: it actually tastes good. Very good. So be careful out there, folks.

How to Make Long Island Iced Tea

You'll find the full recipe with all the ingredients and measurements, below, but making a Long Island Iced Tea couldn't be easier. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add all the various alcohols plus the sweet and sour mix. Hold aside the cola for now. Cover the cocktail shaker and give it a good shake to let all the spirits mix and chill. The Long Island Iced Tea is typically served in a Collins glass or a hurricane glass over a lot of fresh ice with a big splash of cola poured over the top, which creates that tea-like color. Add a slice of fresh lemon for garnish (and to give it that innocent iced tea look) and enjoy responsibly.

Allrecipes Community Tips and Praise

" This IS the Original and Famous LIIT recipe! You got it so right! " says rwladywolf . "The only thing I do differently is put it all in the Tom Collins glass and then roll it into a shaker and back in the Tom Collins glass and then garnish with lemon!"

" This was plenty strong, and tasted WAY better than what you pick up in a normal bar ," says LazyFoodieGirl . "I know it's not 'authentic' but the first time I made this, we actually didn't have cola on hand, so I subbed with ginger ale, and it was pretty dang good that way too!"

"This is so delicious," raves chicaD . "It somehow seems to cancel out the alcohol taste, and there-in is the rub! You could easily drink these in the same quantities as you would regular iced tea. Don't ."

  • U + 9 Unregistered 2019-06-13 03:10:20 Lizzo loves her alcohol. Juice & Sauce are both slang for alcohol. The “Goose” is, I’m assuming, Grey Goose Vodka. DMs are “direct messages.” People are said to slide into the DMs when they are interested in someone...taking it from public to private messages. I think she’s also using “the juice” to be body affirming and using it to describe herself. Add your reply

Long Island Iced Tea

Long Island iced tea is the ultimate party cocktail.

the lit juice

Why Long Island Iced Tea Is So Good

Ingredients.

  • Single Serving

Let’s clarify one thing I wish I had known when I was younger: there is no iced tea anywhere in the Long Island iced tea. It is simply the color of iced tea.

This is critical knowledge to have if you plan to drink one. Or three. Because not knowing this will get you in a whole heap of trouble.

The Long Island Iced Tea is a curious cocktail. Theoretically, it shouldn’t taste all that good considering how many different liquors are being mixed together.

Yet, it works!

The triple sec (an orange-flavored liqueur), lemon juice, and cola bind everything just perfectly.

How To Serve Long Island Iced Tea

This cocktail is an easy one to throw together in a big pitcher for a party. I wait until just before the guests arrive, then mix everything together in a bowl with ice. Strain it into a pitcher and serve!

The step of mixing with the ice helps to quickly chill the drink and adds just the right amount of dilution to the finished cocktail.

Ingredients in Long Island Iced Tea

When there are equal parts of five liquors in a cocktail, one liquor should not overpower any of the others. The goal is to achieve balance in the cocktail—even one that packs as much of a punch as the Long Island Iced Tea. To do that, you'll need quality spirits, but not necessarily high-end spirits.

Top shelf bottles, or small-batch artisanal spirits from the local distillery, can be used in this recipe, but their nuances will get lost in the mix. The LIT—as a bar server would call it—is perfectly happy with the tried and true middle shelf brands of these spirits. (Your pocketbook will be, too.)

  • Tequila: Tequila Blanco is an unaged tequila that's also known as silver or white tequila. Espolòn Tequila Blanco and El Jimador Silver Tequila are quality value tequilas that will work well in an LIT.
  • Rum: Captain Morgan White Rum or Bacardi White Rum work really well in a Long Island Iced Tea. They're good rums that don't break the bank.
  • Vodka: An LIT doesn't need your favorite vodka, just a well-made vodka like Tito's Handmade Vodka or New Amsterdam Vodka.
  • Gin: Standards such as Beefeaters or Tangueray are perfect for Long Island Iced Tea, as is New Amsterdam Gin.
  • Triple Sec: Triple Sec is a sweet, orange flavored liqueur. Cointreau is one brand of well-known triple sec, but feel confident using one that has a lower price tag such as DeKuyper. If Grand Marnier is all you have in your liquor cabinet, it's a fine alternative even though it's a blend of cognac and triple sec, not straight triple sec.

How To Make a Single Serving of Long Island Iced Tea

This super-sized cocktail recipe serves 8 to 12 people. If one cocktail is all you want, use 1 tablespoon each of tequila, rum, vodka, gin, and triple sec; 1 1/2 tablespoons each of lemon juice and simple syrup; and about 3 tablespoons of cola.

Variations on Long Island Iced Tea

Texas Tea: Add 1/2 cup of your favorite bourbon. It's best sipped outside while doing absolutely nothing.

Long Beach Tea: Substitute cranberry juice for the cola for a fruitier and more intensely tart version of this cocktail. It's a novel option for backyard cookouts.

  • Moscow Mule
  • White Russian Cocktail
  • Aperol Spritz
  • Old Fashioned Cocktail

You can buy prepared simple syrup for this recipe, or make it yourself !

To make ahead: Mix the liquors, lemon, and simple syrup from the Long Island Iced Tea ingredients in advance. Right before serving, add the cola and the ice. If you add the cola too soon, it will go flat.

1/2 cup tequila (silver, blanco, or white)

1/2 cup white rum

1/2 cup vodka

1/2 cup gin

1/2 cup triple sec

3/4 cup lemon juice

3/4 cup simple syrup

1 1/2 cups cola

Halved lemon slices , for garnish

Fill a large bowl with ice. Add the tequila, rum, vodka, gin, triple sec, lemon juice, and simple syrup and stir until the mixture is well-chilled.

Finish with a quick, short stir.

Pour individual drinks into highball or hurricane glasses filled with ice. Garnish with lemon wedges. Feel free to top off with an additional splash of cola, if desired.

Why Aurora Cannabis, Tilray Brands, and SNDL Inc. Stocks Lit Up on Tuesday

Marijuana stocks are moving higher on Tuesday after Marijuana Moment reported on a new initiative in Congress that could give marijuana demand a lift. According to the weed-news source, the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Military Personnel is recommending the U.S. military cease testing recruits for marijuana use.

Weed stocks lit up in response. As of 2 p.m., Aurora Cannabis (NASDAQ: ACB) shares were up 6%, Tilray Brands (NASDAQ: TLRY) was up 6.8%, and SNDL Inc. (NASDAQ: SNDL) was doing best of all, scoring a 10.2% gain.

Uncle Sam to end cannabis testing?

As Marijuana Moment reported, the subcommittee is drafting language for Congress' 2025 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which would make this ban on marijuana testing federal law. If passed, it would represent yet another step in a whole series of steps approaching full-scale legalization of marijuana at the federal level .

These steps include a SAFER law on marijuana banking reform, which enjoys widespread support from both major political parties; a less popular Marijuana Opportunity Reinvestment and Expungement (MORE) Act that would legalize the drug entirely; and last month's Drug Enforcement Agency recommendation that marijuana be reclassified as a low-risk Schedule III controlled substance .

It's worth noting that the subcommittee's desire to end marijuana testing among military recruits doesn't mean the full committee will include this language in the 2025 NDAA or that Congress will vote to approve the language.

What it might mean for marijuana stocks

But what if the language does make it into law? Banning marijuana testing of military recruits could help ease the military's well-known problems hitting recruitment goals, at the same time as it removes an obstacle to wider marijuana use -- presumably boosting marijuana sales and use. That being said, the overall effect on marijuana sales would probably be negligible.

Investors in marijuana stocks are reacting to what looks like good news, but I think they are marijuana investors are overreacting today.

Woman Allegedly Blamed Girl, 15, for Being Sexually Abused, Then Tortured Her and Lit Her on Fire: Police

Latonya Harris and her boyfriend are facing several charges including attempted murder

Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office

Content warning: This article contains disturbing allegations of child sex abuse.

A Louisiana woman was arrested alongside her boyfriend for allegedly brutally torturing a teenage girl in her care after learning the boyfriend was sexually abusing the child.

Latonya Harris, 40, and her boyfriend, 41-year-old Terrence Washington, are in custody in connection with the alleged April incident and its aftermath, the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff’s Office announced this week, per FOX 26 , WVUE and WDSU .

Authorities in Baytown, Texas, notified Terrebonne officials on April 21 regarding a crash in their jurisdiction involving the couple, the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff said in a statement, per FOX 21 and WDSU.

Baytown police found the couple, the 15-year-old alleged victim and another minor in the car, the sheriff said, adding that the teenager was found with brutal injuries including burns to her upper body and gunshot wounds to her chest and face, per the outlets.

A Baytown investigator said the case was the “worst she has seen in her entire career,” per WVUE.

Washington was taken into custody while Harris and the child were taken to a local hospital for treatment, per the sheriff.

Washington allegedly told Baytown police that he shot the teenager in their Thibodaux, La., home and had been sexually abusing her for months, the sheriff said, per FOX 26, WVUE and WDSU.

The younger child, who WVUE reports is 10 years old, reportedly told authorities that one night in February, she woke up to find the teenager on fire and the woman allegedly standing over the alleged victim's bed with rubbing alcohol and a lighter, per the outlets.

The sheriff alleged that Washington told authorities that Harris allegedly carried out the assaults after learning that her boyfriend had been sexually abusing the teenager, for which she blamed the minor, according to the outlets.

Harris was arrested on May 9 after being released from the hospital and faces several charges including attempted first-degree murder, second-degree cruelty to a juvenile, and domestic abuse battery child endangerment, the sheriff said, per FOX 26 and WVUE.

Charges against Washington include attempted first-degree murder, second-degree cruelty to a juvenile, obstruction of justice, molestation of a juvenile, three counts of indecent behavior with a juvenile and five counts of second-degree rape, per authorities, WDSU reported.

Washington is currently detained in Texas in connection with his alleged crimes in Texas, per WVUE and FOX 26, but he will be taken into custody in Terrebonne Parish authorities once he is released.

It wasn't immediately clear if Washington or Harris have entered pleas or retained attorneys.

“I now lack the juice to fuel the bluster to conceal that I am a simpleton.” Padgett Powell, Legend

Jean marc ah-sen talks to the author of “edisto”.

Forty years ago, Padgett Powell’s erudite coming of age novel Edisto was released and introduced readers to a 12-year-old literary prodigy named Simons Everson Manigault. Following an acrimonious separation between the “Duchess” and the “Progenitor” (Simons’ parents), the young boy finds himself living in the Manigault summer home in Edisto, South Carolina while his mother descends into alcoholism.

With his domestic reality crumbling to its foundations, Simons spends most of his time at the Baby Grand, a Black nightclub whose patrons take a shine to the young truant. When the Manigault maid’s biracial grandson arrives in Edisto looking for his mother, Simons names him “Taurus” and the name sticks. The unlikely pair develop a friendship, ushering Simons into the world of mid-century American race relations, the sexual revolution, and the infelicitous vortex of confusion that is puberty.

In addition to celebrating Edisto’s milestone anniversary this year, Powell will be releasing Blasphemy and Other Ancestors (Gordon Hill Press), a collaborative book co-authored with myself, Darius James, and Lee Henderson about the tag end of existence and the abasements that memory holds in store for characters living outside of their time.

I corresponded with Powell to discuss the relationship between cornpone and Flann O’Brien, the “rotten taste of America” informing literary culture, and building a career around the “fey interface between believing in the South and making fun of believing in the South.”

Jean Marc Ah-Sen: What was the central attraction of writing Edisto , a bildungsroman that explored Black and white race relations in the South? Why do you think so many writers feel compelled to start their careers writing about emotional and intellectual maturation, and to which characteristics of the coming-of-age novel do you attribute its pride of place among a broadly defined readership?

Padgett Powell: Let me warn us that these questions are too recherche for me. I now lack the juice to fuel the bluster to conceal that I am a simpleton.

A professor in college was roundly pregnant on a Monday, absent Wednesday, and giving her lecture on “The Miller’s Tale” on Friday with the baby on her hip. I thought “What if that little bastard picks this stuff up and knows Chaucer when he’s five?” My own brother had a good mouth on him, there was already the mother in front of me—the novel was there for the writing. The cerebral cogitation was done. Just Strunk & White some sentences and connect them head to tail and throw in everything you’ve ever seen or heard. Done.

You don’t write about “emotional and intellectual maturation.” The attractive characteristic of a young narrator is the absurdity of it and the license of it. Huck Finn is a 14-year-old uneducated antebellum white boy in Mississippi? Huck Finn is Mark Twain being as smart as Mark Twain was. Huck Finn turns him loose. The absurdity of the proposition is like lightning.

JMA: Edisto explored the legacy and aftermath of the reconstruction era all the way into the 1960s. Donald Barthelme in particular praised you for writing about things readers had never heard before between Black and white characters. Did you have a sense that books written about a similar milieu before or around the time of Edisto’s publication were characteristic of a mealy-mouthedness when it came to racial politics?

PP: I am innocent of anything written along these lines or the spectrum of candor in them. Because I was arrested for my underground newspaper Tough Shit in high school and the principal sent it to my college to dematriculate me from it, and I had as a result narrated the events of my arrest to four eminences at that college, the Dean of Men there put me in a dorm room with the odd Black boy out because he figured I was radical enough to be liberal enough to handle early integration.

“I didn’t want some redneck to eat him up,” he put it to me three weeks into the semester. I said I wouldn’t. Jinx took me to his bar—it’s in the book, verisimilitudinously. I saw some low country Black life behind some doors. We’d had a long-term maid, a complicated woman—in the book as Theenie, verbatim. I saw some mullet fishing in Florida where a woman berated a fellow for his sloth; “You so slow, no wonder your wife left you.” His name was Buckwheat, a name I could not alter or drop, as prudence would have suggested; she called him Wheat, and when he said, “She din’ leave me, she died,” the woman yelled, “The ultimate leff!” If these are things not heard before, it is only because no one has listened and written them down. You could not publish them in America today because of liberal-editing racism.

JMA: Twelve years after the release of Edisto , you returned to the world of the Manigault family with Edisto Revisited . What were your motivations for dropping back into the land of mullet fishing, moonshine, and professorial mores during Simons’ university years? Did you always have a sense that there was more to Simons’ story that warranted revisiting, or was there some realization that came afterwards that signaled the attractive possibilities of the story continuing in a sequel?

PP: I had no sense of more to tell, certainly no sense that more was merited, but it was what I could write at the time and I wrote it. Let me lean us up on Flannery O’Connor, our late racist goddesshead: “When I told you to write what is easy I meant what is possible. It is never easy.” If I have misquoted her, it is because my brain has little spots of something in it.

JMA: Your career has been described as participating in the American Southern literary tradition. Was this an association you felt honored by, or perhaps something that you were suspicious of? Do you think that writing embodying the principles of the American South needs to be constantly evolving, or is it something that needs to be carefully curated, and whose boundaries must be clearly defined, in order for it to endure?

PP: It might be fun to tear it all up after the Jews Will Not Replace Us boys in their khakis protest, holding copies of Absalom! Absalom! upside down in the style of Trump with his Bible with duped General Milley at his side. It could all go into the big smelter with the Bobbie E. Lee bronze. But then some smartass would invent another plantation house, another confederate widow, another lost utterancer of the not yet lost cause.

I have made a career of dancing without dancing in the fey interface between believing in the South and making fun of believing in the South, which is why no one has ever heard of me. It’s a lame-ass position. The proper term is chicken-shit.

Who would object if clubists wanted to shove you into a cubbyhole with Faulkner and O’Connor and their queer son Tennessee and too straight son Walker and what-litter-is-he-from son Don? Not I. And my God, Barry Hannah got more out of the whiskey oracle than anyone dead. I do not like the sentimental blood-and-grits crowd and I do not like the apotheosis of Story as Panacea, the from-farm-to-porch menu. Cornpone. No.

Southern writing, not often actually defined, means a deep-down knowing that people are beat to shit. An earnest suspicion of earnestness, a recognition and denial of whippedness. I am now spinning cornpone myself. End of the foregoing. Let’s go read some Flann O’Brien. Those brothers are whipped for real.

JMA: The book that you are perhaps most known for is The Interrogative Mood , A Novel? which is entirely written in the form of meditative questions—“If you were to participate in a spice war, what spice would you fight for?” is my personal favorite. Did you conceive the book as a rascally wedge that could be placed between experimental and commercial fiction? Or was the book perhaps an effort to assert the primacy of artistic questioning over the fatuousness of shopworn opinions?

PP: You continue to try to flatter. But this is sharp flattery. It moves me to pomposity: experimental fiction means no more or less than fiction whose central thrust in not made-up people doing made-up things. Let’s call that MUPDMUT. With some liberty, Mupdeemut. Experimental fiction may of course have Mupdeemut in it, but not as the thrust of it—something beyond our believing in Mupdeemut is at hand.

When Hulga’s leg is stolen by a Bible salesman, we are to believe it. When our friend Colby has gone too far and is to be hanged, we are not to believe it. We have the pleasure of seeing Colby in his anguish, but we have a larger or smaller pleasure of distraction from the dictate to pretend this horseshit actually happens. That is the “experiment.”

Does the imperative to not believe exceed the pleasure of the imperative to believe? Donald Barthelme believed it did if the writing still contained emotional payoff. O’Connor would have said, did say, to hell with it. “If [the Devil] is only a symbol, to hell with it.” The imperative to believe is at one level rather childish, as in Once upon a time… This is why Coleridge had the wit to call it a “suspension of disbelief,” not precisely an imperative to believe. What an upgrade to be told, “Don’t believe this, you morons.” What you do, mischievously, is believe more . At which point the “experiment” has succeeded.

The Int. Mood goes way too far, in Colby terms, and dispenses with Mupdeemut altogether, except for the occasional Jimi Hendrix’s being offered a BLT as he affects to play you a tune. There is no history of intellection in its conception or intent and no prefiguring in its execution (Huck Finn shows you prefigurating for a book like Edisto ).

I received an email from a colleague who wanted me to talk to the Dean that opened, “Is it time for us to have a chat with the dean? Are we remembering what was promised us, last spring, at lunch? Are we going to let history repeat itself?” I suffered pique at this and wrote back, “Are your emotions pure? Are your nerves adjustable? How do you stand in relation to the potato? Should it still be Constantinople?”

The pleasure in this was extreme. I thought how funny it would be—Reply All—for her to receive 600 of these questions, and wrote 600 of them, and then could not stop and wrote 142 pages of them. I saw the “rules” immediately, using her model, but exaggerating the forces. Relieve the silly with the grave, the arch with the colloquial, perfect the overt non-sequitur, watch rhythm, let each sentence deliver its impact—a stonking of someone who would presume write your ass with questions as annoying as they were. Marvelous fun, therapeutic because I was fair exercising some deep contours in my shallow brain, and I felt fine every time I wrote a batch of these things, which I began to liken to thousands of redundant missiles like those we have in our nuclear silos.

JMA: Your prose tends to be voice-driven and characterized by a kind of malapert urbanity. Can you talk about how this stylized way of writing developed, and if it was an artistic response to things you were reading (whether inhospitably or with a deal of enthusiasm)?

PP: I am ignorant of “malapert” but I do get “urbanity.” Here is as an almost certainly impertinent answer that I do not intend to be impertinent: I learned to write the English I have written by taking three years of Latin, in the putatively desolate educational backwater of Jacksonville, Florida, ending in the tenth grade translating The Aeneid . I was in homeroom sitting with Allen Collins of Lynyrd Skynyrd. We was gettin’ it. We did not know we was gettin’ it.

JMA: Does the prose voice that you adopt develop in parallel to the thematic concerns that you will tackle in a given work, or does it emerge as a result of other considerations?

PP: It emerges with no consideration for anything but the next correct word.

JMA: The destiny of all books is to become unmoored from the time which birthed them, and as new readers discover them, their relationship can become not just tinged, but entirely defined by a sense of presentism. You spent a large part of your career teaching at the University of Florida Creative Writing program, and I’m wondering how you would address this reality when and if it occurred in the classroom? Is there, in point of fact, a “right” and “wrong” way to read?

PP: We read formative work asking only what might make it better, by which I meant power in the writing. As I came to the end, the students seemed to have been coached toward a new kind of “better” that meant what was less offensive, and the offense was a multi-headed, surprising beast. One student got in trouble with others when he created a character named Phone Ho. I was mystified by all this and got away rather than try to breast the tide.

I was not going to be able to teach writing, if I ever had taught it. I was turned in for use of the phrase “tsunami of inclusivity.” The phrase was examined for “racial content.” It was judged to be empty of racial content. A prior student suggested I use “politicalicity” as in “tsunami of politicalicity” and I paid him $20 for the word, inserted the phrase, and retired. Please see my students Kevin Wilson and Chris Bachelder, and Kevin Canty and Chris Adrian. There are more. These are just my Kevins and my Chrises, as Trump would put it. God are we doomed.

JMA: Your latest work will be the novelette “The New Book” in our omnibus book Blasphemy and Other Ancestors . Your offering concerns a man of letters taking on an assistant and training him in the righteous arts of romance, but it also features a metafictionally aware narrator playing against a hypothetical reader’s reservations about events unfolding in Florida. I’m curious if this was a way to express frustration with the sensibilities of modern readership or literary criticism?

PP: I think not. What I recall was writing a fairly comprehensible sketch in the South-satire genre, kind of my schtick, getting tired of my schtick, and for relief sliding into something untenably surreal in which even I could not keep straight what I was talking about. So I shet that thing down. My hero turned into Ted Turner, and Monteagle, Tennessee became the Philippines in WWII, and a girl at Walmart turned into Vanna White and I was doomed.

JMA: In an industry that routinely heaps indignity after indignity on its practitioners, what has been the most startling development that you have encountered in recent years while releasing your books? Was it an issue arising as a matter of course from past frustrations, or did it spring from some unprecedented corner of the industry?

PP: It sprang from the unprecedented corner of my own publisher. My book Indigo had been edited and copyedited by two astute, eminent editors, was set to roll, when a “sensitivity editor” was brought in because someone in marketing at the house was not “comfortable representing the book.” (For the record I never saw any evidence that anyone represented the book)

The sensitivity editor, who I suspect was given four times the money I was given for the book, fell to with their sensitivity broadaxe. In a long true account of a dust-up at a restaurant in old Austin, not new Austin, a Black man on my roofing crew came to my defense and knocked out a white restaurant manager, who was at the moment presuming to assault me. Willie had noticed that the manager had Black back-up and felt I should too. “Old Padge need him some brothers too,” he would explain later.

The piece was essentially a portrait of a hero, Willie Ebert Brown, in a terrain of racial relations that had hope in it. The sentence that announced the Black back-up for the manager was this: “A sturdy-looking Black guy came out of the kitchen.” This is choice low fruit for a sensitivity editor. “Objectifying description,” she wrote, “that may invoke associations with slavery.”

I should have desisted publishing the book, but I am a chicken-shit person and I really wanted a book with a beautiful photo of an indigo snake on its cover. My celebration of Willie was thrown out; my invocation of slavery (to which who objects, its absurdity aside?) was one of a hundred other crimes in the piece. Liberal racism had its way: remove racism by removing race.

There is not a person of color in my book except a very positive small tribute to Barack Obama as a tool by which we might argue the French can slow their roll about how racist we are and they aren’t. How that was not deemed racist is a wonder, because it somewhat is. It’s not a wonder: liberal racism is a photo-negative argument. I apologize for this rant. Chicken-shit and now tired too.

JMA: For decades now, readers and writers alike have speculated about where the future of literature is headed, with some espousing the belief that literary fiction in particular is going the way of opera and ballet. I think it could be argued that anything betraying a high literary sensibility is already beholden to blue-blooded patronage and sponsorship, whether we are talking about arts grants and awards bodies or content subscription models like Substack or Patreon. Do you think that literary fiction can find mass appeal among readers or has its place always been in contradistinction to an upmarket reading sensibility?

PP: Does “an upmarket reading sensibility” mean people who buy books at the airport? I confess to feeling loose reading this question. Let’s do a loose answer: a really good book, with anomalies here and there, will not sell well to a mass American market. If you make money here, you have done something wrong. It’s the rotten taste of America, the same force that explains a Trump. We have problems way larger than a poor good writer and a successful conman at large in Washington.

Mom Set Fire to Teen Daughter She 'Blamed' for Being Sexually Abused by Her Own Boyfriend: Police

the lit juice

The girl was "found badly burned, shot multiple times" in the chest and face, "clinging to life" after a car crash; her mother and the mom's boyfriend -- whose home smelled of "decomposing flesh" -- were arrested as the horrifying case unfolded.

A Louisiana woman and her boyfriend are under arrest for inflicting what one investigator described as the "worst" injuries they've seen in their "entire career" on a teenage girl.

Latonya Ann Harris, 40, was charged with Attempted First Degree Murder, Second-Degree cruelty to a juvenile, and Domestic Abuse Battery Child Endangerment for crimes against her own daughter, an unnamed 15-year-old girl.

Her boyfriend, Terrence Washington, also faces charges of Attempted First Degree Murder, Second-Degree Cruelty to a juvenile, Obstruction of Justice, Molestation of a juvenile, 3 counts of Indecent Behavior with a juvenile, and 5 counts of 2nd Degree Rape.

Man Murdered Girlfriend Who 'Confronted' Him About 'Secret' Wife, Then Burned & Dumped Body: Cops

On April 21, the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office says they "learned of a 15-year-old victim who was found badly burned, shot multiple times, but still clinging to life," following a car crash in Baytown, TX around 11pm the night prior.

Washington was allegedly "driving recklessly" and crashed on a service road, before responding officers found him "holding a firearm" when they got to the scene. He was taken into custody, while several other occupants -- including the victim, another child and Harris -- were found in the vehicle.

"Due to the obvious severity of the victim's injuries, she was transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment," reads the release, where medical staff then "discovered the gruesome extent of burns to the upper body of the victim, along with the discovery of gunshot wounds to the victim's chest and face."

Added TPSO: "An Investigator with the Baytown Police Department described the injuries to the victim as the worst she has seen in her entire career."

Washington allegedly told officers he's the one who shot the victim during a fight with the girl's mother at their Louisiana home. He also allegedly "admitted to being responsible for sexual abuse of the victim, which lasted numerous months prior to the victim's injuries." In a followup interview, per the Sheriff's Office, Washington said his gun "went off and shot the victim in the face" on April 19 and, of the burns to the teenager's body, said Harris was responsible for causing them in February.

"Washington stated that the victim was burned after Harris learned of the sexual abuse with the victim, who she blamed for the encounters," said authorities. "Washington confirmed that the victim’s injuries were treated at home by Harris, who refused to obtain medical treatment for the victim."

The minor child in the car was also interviewed and said that "during the Mardi Gras season," she woke up "to the sight of the victim's body on fire, as Latonya Harris stood over her bed with a bottle of rubbing alcohol and a lighter." In the same interview, "SVU Detectives also listened to gruesome details of the victim being shot on two separate days within the home, which went untreated as the family travelled to Texas."

During a search of the family's home, "detectives discovered evidence to confirm that a weapon was shot inside the home, and in addition to blood evidence, the strong odor of infection and decomposing flesh could be smelled."

While Washington allegedly spoke with authorities, TPSO says Harris "refused to speak" with detectives.

"This is the type of case that is not only difficult to deal with the circumstances, but hard to imagine the level of violence and evil that can occur at the hands of a human being," said Sheriff Tim Soignet in a statement. "I can't begin to express how grateful I am to have these extremely violent offenders in custody, and off of our streets."

"Our Detectives have worked tirelessly since learning of the incident, in hopes of protecting an innocent young lady from further torture and abuse," he added.

Harris remains jailed at Terrebonne Parish Criminal Justice Complex on $1 million bond. Washington, meanwhile, will be remanded to the custody of the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff's Office at a later date, as he remains behind bars in Texas "on charges connected to crimes" in the state.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Holy Homicide: A Review of “Murder in the Cathedral” at City Lit

City Lit’s “Murder in the Cathedral,” with Steve Sparling/Photo: Steve Graue

RECOMMENDED

A play in prose by a poet, written nearly ninety years ago at the precipice of world fascism, about the most famous death of the Middle Ages, “Murder in the Cathedral” was one of T.S. Eliot’s earliest plays of the seven he published. It was first performed in 1935 at Canterbury Cathedral in the very space where the onetime Chancellor to King Henry II—made Archbishop of Canterbury to consolidate state and church power—was martyred by four vigilante knights of the King determined to avenge Becket’s choosing church over state.

Because of its verse, it is a play more often read than staged. City Lit, in fact, is advertising its season-closing production of “Murder in the Cathedral”—which is director and outgoing producer and artistic director Terry McCabe’s last—as “the first full production in Chicago since the early fifties.”

City Lit has the immense advantage that it has a church as its home venue, the ideal setting for this play. There was also the clever and effective decision to set the women’s chorus that functions as a Greek chorus—usually done in unison—as a harmonized vocal quartet this time, with a world-premiere score by Philip Seward, sparsely accompanied by piano and chimes.

Four women in traditional church garb.

The 1951 film version, co-written by Eliot, cast an actual priest as Becket, who portrays the Archbishop in Shakespearean fashion, as he wrestles psychologically with the Four Tempters that appear to him. One also thinks of Laurence Olivier in the Broadway version of the Jean Anouilh play or Richard Burton in its 1964 film version. Not this time. James Sparling’s Becket is calm and cool, even in his most challenging moments. A particularly inspiring choice was to treat the Fourth Tempter as within Becket himself so that Sparling has an internal bipolar dialogue that is captivating and chilling.

The Four Knights, of course, break character after the murder and each try to persuade the audience in their own way as to the necessity of what they have done. Early audiences laughing at this caused Elliot to cut back some of these verses but I think it is a sage decision to let this remarkable scene speak for itself, especially given that the threat of fascism then, as now, is all too real.

Through June 16 at City Lit Theater, 1020 West Bryn Mawr. Tickets are available at citylit.org .

Remanded woman lit cannabis joint before getting into prison van

A woman who was remanded in custody at Cork District Court and was being escorted to Limerick Prison lit up a cannabis joint before she got to the van to take her to jail.

The drug possession was immediately detected by Garda David O’Sullivan who seized the joint and later charged Paula Canty with having the drug for her own use.

Canty, age 31, appeared back at Cork District Court on Friday charged that on June 11, 2022, at Cork District Court she had a controlled drug, namely a cannabis joint, in her possession.

She pleaded guilty to this offence.

Her solicitor Eddie Burke said gardaí familiar with the defendant, who has numerous previous convictions, may have been surprised to see her come into court sober.

“She has completed her full treatment programme at Coolmine and she is doing extremely well. She has been giving clean urinalysis for a long period.

“Originally from Kinsale, she had a very difficult time in her early life. Whatever happened in Dóchas (centre in prison in Dublin) seems to be working the oracle. And she is not hanging around Cork city meeting old foes,” Mr Burke said.

Judge Mary Dorgan agreed that was really good news. Despite the large number of previous convictions, Judge Dorgan said she would deal with the offence by means of a €100 fine and she gave Canty three months to pay it.
