10 Examples of artist bios: How to write a super artist bio

Examples of artist bios often include key elements like the artist's name, area of expertise, career milestones, personal interests, and contact info. They're tailored to engage the audience while reflecting the artist's unique voice and journey.

Ever find yourself staring at a blank screen, wondering how to condense your artistic journey into a few paragraphs?

Trust me, you're not alone.

An artist bio isn't just a list of facts; it's a narrative that invites people into your creative world.

So, why is it so crucial?

Well, it's your handshake with the audience, a way to say, “Hey, this is me, and this is my art.”

Stick around as we go into the how-tos and examples of artist bios that make a lasting impression.

On this page

Key Takeaways

  • Define your artistic identity clearly : Your bio is your opportunity to introduce not just your art, but who you are as an artist. It should include your medium, inspiration, and artistic goals. This clarity helps in aligning your business plan with your art, ensuring your marketing strategies and portfolio resonate with your artistic vision.
  • Use your unique voice : Inject your personality into your bio to make it stand out. Whether your tone is serious, whimsical, or quirky, ensure it reflects the uniqueness of your art. This authenticity makes your bio more engaging and memorable, inviting your audience into your creative world.
  • Update regularly : As your artistic journey evolves, so should your bio. Regular updates reflecting new milestones, exhibitions, or shifts in your artistic focus keep your audience informed and engaged. This dynamic approach ensures your bio remains relevant and an accurate reflection of your current artistic identity.

Defining Yourself as an Artist in Your Bio Informs Your Business Plan

There is an interesting interplay between your artist bio and your business plan.

You see, your artist bio isn't just a narrative; it's a declaration of your artistic identity . It's where you lay out your style, your inspirations, your goalsโ€”essentially, it's where you define who you are as an artist.

And guess what?

When you're clear about your artistic identity in your bio, it becomes easier to map out a business plan that truly aligns with your art and your aspirations.

Your bio can help you identify your target audience, decide on the right marketing strategies, and even guide you in creating a portfolio that resonates with your artistic vision.

The Artist Bio vs. The Artist Statement: What's the Difference?

The artist bio and the artist statementโ€”two essential pieces of writing, yet each serves a distinct purpose in the world of art.

Your artist bio is like the opening scene of a film; it sets the stage and introduces the characters. It's a narrative that tells the story of youโ€”the artist. It covers your journey, your influences, your achievements, and even a bit of your personality. It's a comprehensive look at who you are, aimed at engaging the audience and making them want to know more about you and, by extension, your art.

Now, the artist statement, that's a different beast altogether.

Think of it as a spotlight that shines exclusively on a specific body of work. It's your chance to delve deep into your artistic process, the themes you explore, and the techniques you employ.

While your bio might say, “I'm a painter inspired by nature,” your artist statement would elaborate on how the colors of autumn leaves influence your palette, or how the texture of tree bark finds its way into your brush strokes. It's more focused, more immediate, and speaks directly to the art that's right in front of the viewer.

So, while your bio draws people into your world, your artist statement guides them through a specific landscape within that world.

Writing the Perfect Artist Bio

Your artistic title: what's your medium.

First things first, let's get clear on what you do.

Are you a painter, a digital artist, or maybe a sculptor?

Your title sets the stage, so make it clear and precise.

Your Home Base: Where's Your Creative Den?

Your location can say a lot about you and your art.

Whether you're soaking up the urban vibes of a bustling city or drawing inspiration from a tranquil countryside, let people know where you're coming fromโ€”literally.

Your Milestones: What's Your Artistic Journey?

Here's where you can brag a little. Got any exhibitions, awards, or significant projects under your belt? This is the time to shine a spotlight on them.

A Dash of You: What Makes You Tick?

Throw in some personal tidbits to make your bio relatable. Are you a coffee addict, a night owl, or maybe a hiking enthusiast? These little details can make you more memorable.

Stay Connected: How Can We Reach You?

Don't forget to include ways people can connect with you. Your website, social media handles, and other contact information should be easily accessible.

Tips for Improving Your Artist Bio

Crafting an artist bio is like painting a self-portrait with words. It's a small canvas, but it can make a big impact.

Here are some tips that'll help you brush up your bio and make it a masterpiece.

Understand the Audience

First off, know who you're talking to.

Are you aiming for gallery curators, potential clients, or a broader audience on social media?

Tailoring your tone and content based on your audience can make your bio resonate more effectively.

For instance, if your primary audience is other artists, you might want to delve into the nitty-gritty of your techniques.

Use Your Unique Voice

Your art is unique, and so are you.

Let your personality shine through your writing. Whether you're quirky, serious, or whimsical, your voice should be consistent with the art you create.

This adds a layer of authenticity and makes your bio more engaging.

Consider Length Requirements

How long should it be?

Well, it depends on where your bio will be published.

If it's for a gallery submission, they might have specific word limits.

On your own website, you have more freedom.

But remember, a bio is like a good sketchโ€”detailed enough to be interesting, but not so much that it becomes a full-blown painting.

Additional Artist Bio Tips

  • Avoid Jargon : Unless your audience is well-versed in art terminology, keep it simple. You want to invite people into your world, not alienate them.
  • Be Honest, Be You : Authenticity shines brighter than any embellishment. Your bio should be a true reflection of who you are as an artist.
  • Proofreading is Your Friend : Before publishing, make sure to proofread your bio. A typo can be a small thing that takes away from the overall picture. Maybe even get a second pair of eyes to look it over.
  • Update, Update, Update : Your art evolves, and so should your bio. Every time there's a significant change in your artistic journey, take a moment to update your bio.

  • Creating beautiful artwork, one self-taught lesson at a time
  • Iโ€™m not self-taught, Iโ€™m self-certified
  • Education can make you a living. Being self-taught can make you a fortune
  • Self-taught and proud. Education fills your mind with the opinions of others
  • Of course, Iโ€™m self-taught. You didnโ€™t finger paint when you were a kid, too?

5-Step Guide to Creating a Great Instagram Bio for an Artist (With Examples)

Look, itโ€™s hard enough to get work as an artist. No need to make it any harder.

A great Instagram bio is one of the most effective ways to grow your Instagram account, sway a clientโ€™s opinion, and get business. In fact, your Instagram bio could easily make the difference between gaining more influence – and work – and losing out to others.

Your artist bio should state exactly what you do, what you stand for, and why you make art. It should also provide a way for customers to contact you as well as a REASON for them to do so.

This is where most artists get it wrongโ€ฆand you can get it right.

Weโ€™re going to take some examples from some of the platform’s most famous artists and break them down piece by piece. Just emulate them with your own little twist, and youโ€™ll be ahead of the game.

Letโ€™s get to it:

Step 1: Put Your Best Foot Forward

A screenshot of an instagram profile of shantell martin, a famous artist

Source: Shantell_Martin

Your Instagram bio should immediately hook visitors and wow them with your past experience. This is one of the best ways to gain followers and potential customers.

Shantell does this to perfection by flexing her past achievements. This is similar to how authors lead with things like โ€œNew York Times Bestselling Authorโ€.

Shantell shows off her museum exhibits and all of her past positions at major universities. I donโ€™t expect you to have this level of credentials, but anything youโ€™ve got like a teaching position or awards will do.

Step 2: Sprinkle in a Bit of humor

Screenshot of the Instagram profile of JR, a famous french artist

Source: @JR

Humor is one of the best ways to improve signups. Use it.

People love connecting with authentic human beings, and prefer when professionals and influencers donโ€™t take themselves too seriously. JR does it perfectly here by poking a little fun at himself.

If you can get people laughing in your Instagram bio, youโ€™ve got a way better chance of getting more followers ( and more business) .

Step 3: State Exactly What You Do

screenshot of the instagram profile or Edoarda, a famous artist

Source: Edoaratresoldiofficial

The artist of absent matterโ€ฆ

Edoardo Tresoldi is a well-known artist whose bio states exactly what he does ( and who he is) .

This lets visitors know immediately what to expect from you. Itโ€™s also a bit like step #1 in that it shows your best achievements right off the bat.

The perfect Instagram bio should let a potential customer know that they are in the right place. Now, anyone who lands on this Instagram page knows that Edoardo is the type of artist theyโ€™d like to work with.

For you, you could put something like โ€œheadshot photographerโ€, โ€œimpressionist painterโ€, or even โ€œgraphic designer for Fortune 500 companiesโ€. Whatever it is you do, add it to your art Instagram bio.

Step 4: Add links to Your Website

Screenshot of caistudio, a famous instagram art profile

Source: Caistudio

Add links to the bottom of your Instagram artist bio showing people where to find you and what you have to offer.

You could even post multiple links inside of that link that point to other important websites. For example, Caistudio adds a little +1 next to the link denoting that thereโ€™s another link in there. That link points to their TED Talks.

This adds even more panache to his name and instills more trust in the visitor.

At the very least, add some links to other pages you own, your university, projects youโ€™ve worked on, or causes you support.

Step 5: Add an Offer or a CTA

screenshot of the profile of julia powell, a famous artist on instagram

Source: Juliaspowellart

If youโ€™re offering products or services, itโ€™s important to let people know what theyโ€™re getting and how theyโ€™re getting it.

Julia S. Powell has a great Instagram bio because she lets people know what she does AND what she offers. Then, she adds a clear call to action with details.

She tells people to DM or email her, then tells them that she ships worldwide. This not only nudges people to contact her but it explains why they should.

This is textbook online business. Good job, Julia.

You absolutely must have a compelling Instagram bio if you want to increase followers and earn potential business.

You only get 150 characters to grab someoneโ€™s attention and turn them into a follower.

Your Instagram bio must:

  • State what you do
  • Tell a bit about you
  • Show people what you offer
  • Give them a reason to follow or contact you

I hope you found the perfect Instagram bio in this massive list. And if you didnโ€™t, you now have seen some great artist bio examples and our process for creating a bio.

4-Step Guide: How To Create The Perfect Instagram Bio For Your Business

Instagram gives you 150 characters to tell your followers what your business is about.

This is where you are given the opportunity to summarize your company, engage your audience, and leave a great first impression.

We will break down the qualities and aspects of Later's Instagram bio, as a template for you to use.

Step 1: Highlight Exactly What You Do

Your Instagram bio should be a place where you tell your readers exactly who you are.

This should be brief, clear, and to the point. Explain what makes you unique and what you can do for your audience.

In the Later example, they do this in two different ways:

  • In their profile name, they showcase their company name with a clear description of what they do
  • They provide even more explanation and boost their brand up, saying they are the #1 marketing platform for Instagram

article

Step 2: Pitch Your Service [And Use Relevant Keywords]

While it's important to explain what type of company you are, it's also critical to pitch your product or service.

When creating a website, this is often the first thing people see on your site to really understand what you are offering and what makes you stand out from the rest.

Later does this using one line on their bio, and 8 relevant keywords:

Step 3: Provide A Clear Call To Action

Your call to action should be something you are encouraging your audience to do.

This could be in the form of a recent promotion you are offering, a link to a specific article you want eyes on, or just a way for users to get directed to your website.

In any case, you should always provide the user with easy access to whatever it is you'd like them to do. You can do this by providing a direct, embedded link on your bio.

For the Later example, they encourage users to check out their blog where they showcase tips and guides. This is a common strategy that brands use to get more traffic to their blog, and eventually, turn leads into customers.

Step 4: Use Emojis

Lastly, emojis are a great way to break up any text-heavy sections in your Instagram bio.

Be sure to use emojis that are relevant to your brand or to highlight the items you are discussing in your bio.

Later adds emojis to draw the readers eyes to certain aspects of their bio, such as what they do and their call to action:

Artist Bios 101: Here’s How To Write An Amazing Artist Profile

Wondering what makes an unforgettable artist bio? Follow our how-to guide to learning everything about writing an artist bio that will make people remember you! (160 characters)

abstract art artist 1047524 1

Your artist bio is your chance to really grab the interest of potential clients and make them understand what it is about your art thatโ€™s different from the rest. It can be a powerful art marketing tool, so you want to make sure you take the time to craft an amazing artist profile that does your incredible artwork justice!

When building online portfolios, many artists (and even brands) overlook the importance of the about-me page . But, no matter what kind of art you make, visitors to your website are highly likely to click it within a little while of landing on your page. Think of your artist bio as your chance to craft the lens that theyโ€™ll view your work through.

Donโ€™t have an artist portfolio website just yet? Your About the Artist page will live on your online portfolio, of course, so itโ€™s a good idea to have one up and running before you start crafting that artist profile. Make sure to choose a website builder that lets you easily add custom pages, so that you can add an artist bio page and place it wherever you want in your websiteโ€™s menu (Hint: you should put it somewhere thatโ€™s easy to find, so your visitors donโ€™t have to look for it).

Choose an online portfolio with beautiful website templates that allow you to make easy, fast tweaks to your artist profile whenever you wantโ€”no code required! The best website builders will have lots of typography options built right in, so that you can really customize the look of that About the Artist page without having to mess around with importing fonts.

Okay, you have some ideas for how to build your artist bio into your portfolio website, but what makes a really strong artist profile in the first place? What should you include, and what is better left out? Where do you start?

abstract-art-artist-1047524

Craft the Perfect Opening Sentence

A short artist bio is usually better than a lengthy one. Check out some short artist bio examples and some longer ones, and notice which tend to stick in your mind more. (Not sure where to find them? Check out the online portfolios of other artists you respect to find some good artist bio examples.) Attention spans are limited online, so if you want to get your point across and make sure your reader goes through your whole artist profile, itโ€™s best to keep things concise. That means every sentence matters.

The opening sentence is important because thatโ€™s where the reader gets hooked. This sentence should be able to stand alone, communicating who you are and something unique about the kind of art you make. Check out some successful artist bio samples online; a tried-and-true method is to use the first sentence to state the artistโ€™s name as well as their preferred medium or the style of their art.

Remember, your artist profile is also a chance to improve the SEO ranking of your portfolio website. Consider the kinds of keywords that people who might buy your art would search for. Are you an oil painter ? Then you should use that keyword early in your artist bio, since search engines will rank that higher than if you mention it at the very end of your artist bio.

The same goes for subject matter: if you usually photograph landscapes in a certain region, you should make sure that first sentence includes something like โ€œPacific Northwest landscape photographer,” which will let your reader know what it is that you doโ€”but will also be SEO-friendly. If youโ€™re confused about where to start with search engine optimization, no worries. Our guide will answer a ton of your questions and help you make your portfolio website super SEO-friendly.

Know Your Audience

Another thing youโ€™ll see across the best artist profile samples is that theyโ€™re speaking to a well-defined audience. Think about who you hope will see your website, and who youโ€™re hoping will take the next step and want to work with you or buy your art.

If youโ€™re selling your work directly to consumers on your portfolio website, consider writing an artist bio that the average person who doesnโ€™t have a background in art would be able to understand. You definitely donโ€™t want to alienate people with too much art industry jargon in that artist profile! Itโ€™ll fly over their heads and, worst of all, it will make them feel less comfortable buying from you.

Look up some artist profile examples from artists in your field, and try to pick out some descriptive words that you like, that explain your art, and that are understandable to laypeople. A good test to make sure that youโ€™re writing a clearly understandable artist bio is to have a non-artist friend read it over tell you if anything stands out as too technical. You also want to sound like yourself and convey a bit of personality, so try to maintain your own voice as you write.

An exception to this is if your target audience is actually a technical crowd, such as art gallery owners. If your main goal with your portfolio website is to get noticed by galleries , then you can get away with language that would be understood by people in your industry. Thereโ€™s no one-size-fits-all โ€œmeet the artist” template; itโ€™s super important to know your audience and write your artist bio with them in mind.

artist-brush-daytime-1340502

Describe Your Work

Now that you know what kind of language is appropriate for your artist profile, you can start describing the work that you do. Here you can describe a bit about the style that your artwork fits into, the kinds of techniques you use, and interesting tidbits about your process.

Your goal should be to give the reader the understanding that thereโ€™s something unique about you and your work (because there is!). Take a bit of time to really think about what defines and characterizes your art. Again, checking out other artist profile examples is a good way to get the creative juices flowing and come up with some effective vocabulary that you can use yourself.

You should also help the reader understand the message of your work, or what it is that youโ€™re communicating through your chosen medium. This can be really helpful in giving people a framework to understand your art, and can make clicking through your online profile much more enjoyable.

Get Personal

You donโ€™t have to share everything about yourself, but plenty of good artist website examples do share a little bit of personal information about the artist. This info should still serve the main purpose of helping readers understand what is different about your art and what you are trying to convey through it, but itโ€™s always easier to connect to a piece with a little bit of personal information.

For example, if you spent some studying or practicing in a cool art city and that experience impacts your work today, that would be a cool piece of information to share in an artist profile. You definitely donโ€™t need to share all of your hobbies and interests, but anything that helps contextualize your art and your purpose in making it will help people connect to your art in a deeper way.

Provide A Visual

If you look up visual artist bio samples youโ€™ll probably see that many of them include a little visual along with the text. Having a visual reference of one of your pieces on the same page as your artist profile lets readers see your philosophy in practice without having to navigate away to a gallery on your website. Make sure to choose a piece that exemplifies the things you talked about in your bio!

Even the best artist bios need to be revised as you develop in your career. Try to review your About the Artist page regularlyโ€”every six months, at a minimumโ€”to make sure that itโ€™s up-to-date. Maybe youโ€™ve snagged some art contest wins or written a stylish new case study for a recent design piece. Thatโ€™s the kind of info you should definitely keep your artist profile updated with!

artist-painting-artwork-at-workspace-PJL62LX

While youโ€™re at it, itโ€™s a good idea to update the actual content of your online portfolio as well. Keep your artist bio and the work in your portfolio as fresh as possibleโ€”that gives people good reason to keep checking back to stay on top of what youโ€™re up to. Details About Services Offered: Showcasing Your Makeup Artist Expertise

Your services page is one of the most important parts of your makeup artist portfolio. This section allows you to demonstrate the breadth of your experience and the specialized skills you offer to clients. You want to be as detailed as possible to show prospects exactly what working with you will look like.

Showcasing makeup skills in your portfolio

Craft Descriptions That Capture Your Capabilities

Don’t just say “I offer bridal makeup.” Go into specifics about your bridal makeup services:

  • Bridal makeup application for the bride, including airbrush foundation, soft glam eyeshadow, bold lashes, and long-lasting lip color.
  • On-location bridal makeup for the entire wedding party.
  • Bridal hair styling, including updos, blowouts, and chic wedding hairstyles.
  • Bridal makeup trials to perfect the wedding day look.

This helps clients understand exactly what you provide as part of your bridal makeup package. Do this for all your areas of expertise like editorial makeup, special effects, mature skin makeup, and more.

List the Brands and Products You Use

Clients want to know what types of makeup you’ll use for their application. Include lists of the professional brands you rely on like:

  • Foundation: Make Up For Ever, NARS, Armani
  • Eyeshadow: Anastasia Beverly Hills, Natasha Denona
  • Mascara: Benefit, Lancome, Dior

And any specialty products for services like airbrush makeup or waterproof makeup for ocean weddings.

Provide Pricing and Package Details

Be upfront with pricing so clients know what to expect. Create tables like this:

Bridal Makeup$150
Bridesmaid Makeup$100
On-location Fee$50/hour

List your rates for standard services or the packages you offer. This gives your portfolio a polished, professional feel.

Include comprehensive details on your services, expertise, and prices. This builds trust with potential clients and shows you have the experience they need.

Showcasing Client Experiences with Testimonials

Testimonials from past clients are a must-have in your makeup artist portfolio. Positive reviews reinforce your expertise and help prospective clients visualize working with you.

Follow these tips to make the testimonials section of your makeup portfolio shine:

Get Permission to Use Names and Photos

Always ask clients before including their reviews. Many will be happy to provide a testimonial but you want to be sure you have their consent to use:

  • Their first and last name
  • Location (city/state)
  • Photograph from their makeup application

Having real names and locations lends authenticity. Photos help prospective customers picture how you would do their makeup.

Gather a Variety of Testimonials

Aim for diversity in your testimonials:

  • Client types: Include reviews from brides, models, corporate clients, prom goers, senior citizens, etc. This shows your versatility.
  • Makeup services: Get testimonials relevant to the services you offer like bridal, editorial, special effects, etc.
  • Sentiment: Showcase feedback on your technical skills, professionalism, and overall experience working with you.

This variety shows all the strengths clients can expect when hiring you.

Feature the Testimonials Prominently

Place testimonials early in your portfolio and make them easy to read with ample whitespace between reviews. Pull out brief excerpts to highlight in larger text.

For example:

“Jennifer made me feel so beautiful on my wedding day. My makeup looked flawless in all our photos.”

  • Sarah M., Boston MA

Well-presented testimonials make prospects excited to book you!

In summary, compelling client testimonials are crucial for convincing potential customers to hire you as their makeup artist. Follow these tips to make this section really stand out.

Crafting Your Makeup Artist Bio: Telling Your Story

Your biography is where you get to showcase what makes you unique as a makeup artist. This is your chance to connect with prospective clients on a personal level.

Follow these tips for writing a compelling bio for your makeup portfolio:

Share Your Background

Give insight into your journey by including:

  • Where you’re based
  • How you got started as a makeup artist
  • Years of experience
  • Relevant education and certifications

This helps build credibility and trust.

Tina is a certified makeup artist based in Austin, TX. She has over 5 years of experience having gotten her start by completing an intensive makeup artistry program at the prestigious Make Up First Academy in Los Angeles.

Spotlight Your Specialties

Don’t just say “I do all types of makeup.” Go in-depth on your specific areas of expertise. For example:

  • Specializing in bridal and special event makeup application
  • Expertise in airbrush makeup techniques
  • Trained in contouring and highlighting for photography
  • Loves creating editorial looks for models

This shows clients exactly how you can meet their needs.

Share Your Style and Philosophy

Give clients insight into your approach by explaining things like:

  • Your style – glam, natural, artistic, etc.
  • Makeup philosophy – enhancing natural beauty, etc.
  • How you consult with clients to create their perfect look
  • Customizing looks to match client preferences
  • Accommodating skin types, conditions, sensitivities

This allows clients to see if you are a good match for them.

A professional makeup artist portfolio

In your bio, you want to present the full picture of who you are as a makeup artist. This section is critical for attracting clients who resonate with you.

If you’re just starting out and want to learn how to become a makeup artist , check out this comprehensive guide on the step-by-step process for getting trained and certified in makeup artistry.

Contact Information: Making It Easy for Clients to Book You

An often overlooked but critical part of your makeup artist portfolio is your contact information. This section makes it easy for excited prospective clients to get in touch and book your services.

Follow these tips for showcasing your contact info:

List Multiple Methods of Contact

Give clients options by providing:

  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Contact form on your website
  • Links to booking platforms like Schedulicity or Vagaro
  • Links to social media profiles

The easier you make it to contact you, the more bookings you will get!

Format Contact Info Prominently

Place your contact information prominently at both the beginning and end of your portfolio. This ensures customers don’t miss it.

Make it stand out visually by:

  • Putting it in a text box
  • Using a larger font size
  • Bolding the text
  • Using contrasting colors

Encourage Prospects to Get in Touch

Use action-driven language to prompt contacts. For example:

“I would love to bring your makeup vision to life! Reach out today to discuss your beauty needs and set up a consultation.”

“Ready to book? Contact me now at [email] or [phone] to reserve your date!”

This drives action and gets more clients through your doors.

Make your contact information clear, easy to find, and accessible. This will maximize your bookings and grow your makeup artist business.

Portfolio Formatting and Presentation: Showcasing Your Personal Brand

How you format and design your makeup artist portfolio is just as important as the content. The presentation, layout, and visual branding allow you to highlight your unique style and appeal to potential clients.

Success achieved through a well-crafted makeup artist portfolio

Follow these tips for styling your portfolio:

Choose a Visual Theme

Pick visual elements that represent your aesthetic. This may include:

  • Color palette – black, gold, and nude for glam looks; earth tones for natural beauty
  • Fonts – sleek sans serifs or elegant scripts
  • Patterns and textures – marble, florals, animal print accents
  • Borders and dividers – metallic lines, botanical frames

Maintain these styles throughout your portfolio for a polished, professional look.

Optimize Layout and Navigation

Make your portfolio easy to view and navigate with:

  • A clean, uncluttered layout
  • Clear section headings
  • Numbered pagination
  • Intuitive flow between pages/slides
  • Prominent links to your website, social media, and contact info

This improves user experience.

Offer Both Digital and Print Versions

Create flexibility to share your portfolio by providing:

  • A PDF version to email or attach to applications
  • Printed portfolios to bring to in-person meetings
  • A website version clients can view online

Offering both digital and print options makes your work accessible.

Keep your personal brand and ideal client in mind as you design your makeup portfolio. A cohesive presentation elevates your work and helps attract clients who resonate with your unique aesthetic and style.

How to Make the Most of Your Artist Bios: The Essential Guide for Galleries

How to Make the Most of Your Artist Bios: The Essential Guide for Galleries

Itโ€™s important to make the most of your artist bios. If theyโ€™re both well-written and used effectively they can also be a great tool for your digital marketing strategy.

An effective artist bio is a great way to introduce and engage collectors in an artistโ€™s work. Unlike an artist statement or CV, it is usually a concise summary about the artist and their work. A good artist bio will provide the collector with enough information to make them want to learn more, without overwhelming them with too much detail. Itโ€™s important to make the most of your artist bios. If theyโ€™re both well-written and used effectively they can also be a great tool for your digital marketing strategy.

Read our guide below for all you need to know about writing the perfect artist bio and how to incorporate it into your marketing strategy.

Artist bio - African American woman looking at paintings in studio ยท

What Things Should You Consider to Write an Effective Artist Bio?

Use this list below as a helpful guide when writing your artist bios. Donโ€™t worry about including every item on the list, in some cases, some criteria may not work depending on the artist. Use this as a guide to figure out what works best for your gallery and artists.

The Length of the Artists Bio

The length of your bios should be no more than 150 words. As mentioned before, the artistโ€™s bio is a concise summary, not a detailed list of the artistโ€™s exhibition history and achievements. Why should you stick to a 150 word cut off? An article by  Artsy  notes that museum studies on audience engagement have shown that anything longer than 150 words does not keep the reader’s attention. Note that is the recommended maximum length so if you keep your bios shorter, 80-100 words, that works too. Itโ€™s best to keep them succinct and to the point, rather than adding too many embellishments.

Craft an Engaging First Sentence

The first sentence is the most important part of the bio. Itโ€™s where you grab the readerโ€™s attention and make them want to learn more. Spend time crafting an engaging first sentence. Try to open with a sentence that summarizes the artistโ€™s work and states what is most important about them, rather than opening with biographical information.

Readability

The user experience is important to keep in mind. It seems simple, but there are plenty of published artists’ bios that are unpleasant to read.

Confusing layouts, ugly font, hyperbolic praise, artspeak, too much information in one place: they all add up to a cluttered and irritating experience for readers.

Keep it clean and simple. You may want to try to fit a lot of information in, but don’t get too bogged down in details or flowery language. Keeping it short and to the point will make sure it’s readable and friendly for your audience.

Educate First Vs the Hard-sell

Describe the artistโ€™s work. To do this, focus on their medium technique and style. As well as the subject matter or main themes of their work. You can also include information that may not be too obvious from images of their work, like further insight into their method or process. Try to highlight what sets them apart and what is significant about their work. You can also include where they draw their inspiration from.

If possible, position the artist and their work in the context of art history, by time period, or art movement. Or you can place the artist in a wider cultural context. This could be specific to the political, social, or technological climate that they work in.

Engage the Audience With Artist Quotes

Include a quote by the artist, if itโ€™s relevant and it adds substance to any of the topics listed above. However, donโ€™t include it as filler content just to add length to the bio.

Stay up to date on the latest from ARTERNAL

Most common artist bio mistakes to avoid, lengthy artists bios .

Avoid writing bios that are too long and have too much information about the artistโ€™s CV, awards, and exhibition history. However impressive the information may be, long lists are a good way to lose your readerโ€™s attention, itโ€™s best to keep it short and to the point. You could always highlight a single notable award or exhibition, but careful not to go overboard.

Spelling and Punctuation

Avoid spelling and grammar mistakes. Proofreading is important. We recommend having at least one or two other eyes review your bios. Mistakes are easy to make, especially when youโ€™re close to the material.  But missing these simple errors can diminish your galleryโ€™s reputation and authority. Donโ€™t underestimate the value of a good proofreader.

Out of Date Artists Bios

Make sure to keep your bios up to date. Avoid outdated bios by regularly checking them, once a year or so, to be sure they have the most up to date information. This is also an easy mistake that can damage your galleryโ€™s credibility. This is especially important if you work with talented emerging artists.

How Can Artist Bios Help Your Digital Marketing Strategy?

Now that you know the foundation of how to write a great artist bio, itโ€™s time to make the most of them and incorporate them in your larger digital marketing strategy.

SEO and Artists Bios

One important factor to consider is SEO or search engine optimization. SEO is defined by  Moz  as โ€œthe practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results.โ€ In other words, producing quality content in a way that search engines recognize as valuable to your audience so you rank higher in searches. A well-written bio with SEO in mind can help your gallery website continue to rank for keywords and search terms over time. So when writing your artist bios, think about what terms your audience will be searching for and incorporate those keywords into your bios. Keywords could include the artistโ€™s name, subject matter, medium, or style of work.

Backlinks from Artists Bios

Along with using relevant keywords in your artist bios, another SEO factor to consider is link building. Search engines recognize your website as more important when reputable websites link to your website (also called backlinks). This, in turn, will also help you rank higher and get more organic traffic. To accomplish this start building relationships with organizations that you want links from. When it comes to backlinks, quality is more important than quantity.

You can also use internal links to help with your SEO strategy. Link keywords or phrases in your artistsโ€™ bios to other pages on your website, again only if relevant.  Moz  offers a detailed beginners guide if youโ€™d like to learn more about link building.

Use Social Media and Digital Tools to Share Your Artist Bios and Track Engagement

Social media strategy and artists bios  .

Work with your artists and make sure that youโ€™re on the same page when it comes to posting on social media. This way your social media initiatives will be mutually beneficial. When artists post about their work, itโ€™s important they tag your gallery in the body of the post as well in the image they post. This will help drive traffic to your gallery website where you can engage with clients and continue conversations.

After your artist bios have been published make sure youโ€™re set up with  Google Analytics  to track website engagement. Google Analytics collects and records user data so you can see whatโ€™s working and what areas might need improvement on your website. With Google Analytics you can find out which content or artists are performing best, how your visitors are finding your content, and information about your visitors. Check out expert digital marketer,  Neil Patelโ€™s blog  to learn more about Google Analytics and how you can make the most of this free service.

Advanced Social Marketing Strategies with Artists Bios

The new battleground for galleries working with artists is the artist’s social media profile bio page. It’s now some of the most valuable real estates in the digital world.

Influencer marketing is a powerful strategy for galleries to use with their artist bios. Andrew Chen, a startup growth expert, mentioned that “Whoever controls the link controls the business model for the new economy that’s being built.” Once a gallery has established a mutually beneficial relationship on social media with the artists, they can create a pseudo influencer marketing program that can treat artists as influencers and give galleries how to measure each artist’s Social Media ROI.

Let’s dive into this in more detail. Here’s a screenshot of Andrew Cranston social media profile.

If we look at the link on his profile we can see itโ€™s from INGLEBY Gallery. Upon clicking on the link it goes into Andre Carnstonโ€™s artist bio on their gallery webpage.

artists bio - INGLEBY Andrew Cranston artist bio

Andrew has linked his social media profile to his artist bio from INGLEBY. Every time Andrew makes a post and viewers click on his profile link, the gallery is getting more exposure. This is an actionable strategy most galleries can put into action. Establishing an influencer marketing program with your artists is a great way to grow your following.

You can take your Google Analytics to the next level by using UTM Parameters to see which individual artist brings the most traffic from social media. Check out Neil Patelโ€™s blog article on  UTM Parameters  to learn more.

In today’s digital age, social media has become a crucial platform for businesses to reach their target audience. If you’re a makeup artist, having a strong presence on Instagram is essential for promoting your work and gaining new clients. One of the most important elements of your Instagram profile is your bio. In this article, we’ll provide you with some makeup artist Instagram bio ideas that will help you create an attractive and engaging profile.

Table of Contents

1. Keep it Short and Sweet

Your Instagram bio should be concise and to the point. You only have 150 characters to work with, so make sure every word counts. Consider using bullet points to make your bio easier to read.

2. Highlight Your Specialization

Whether you specialize in bridal makeup or special effects, make sure to highlight your area of expertise in your bio. This will help potential clients understand what services you offer.

3. Use Keywords

Incorporating keywords in your bio will improve your chances of showing up in search results. Use terms such as “makeup artist,” “bridal makeup,” “special effects,” or any other relevant keywords to your niche.

4. Add Some Personality

Your Instagram bio is a chance to showcase your personality and stand out from the competition. Consider adding some fun facts about yourself or your work to give your profile a personal touch.

5. Share Your Achievements

If you’ve won awards or been featured in publications, make sure to mention it in your bio. This will add credibility to your work and show potential clients that you’re a trusted professional.

6. Include Contact Information

Make it easy for potential clients to get in touch with you by including your contact information in your bio. This could be your email address, phone number, or a link to your website.

7. Use Emojis

Emojis can add some visual interest to your bio and make it easier to read. However, make sure not to overdo it and use too many emojis, as this can make your bio look cluttered.

8. Use Call-to-Actions

Using a call-to-action in your bio can encourage potential clients to take action. For example, you could ask them to book a consultation or visit your website.

9. Showcase Your Portfolio

Instagram is a visual platform, so make sure to showcase your work in your bio. You could include a link to your portfolio or use the Instagram “Highlights” feature to showcase your best work.

10. Update Regularly

Make sure to update your bio regularly to reflect any changes to your business or achievements. This will show potential clients that you’re active and engaged on the platform.

How Danessa Myricks "Accidentally" Became a Makeup Artist, Photographer, and Brand Owner

By Jihan Forbes

Image of Danessa Myricks smiling on a graphic computer screen.

"What was your big break?" It's a question people often ask of celebrities, but at Allure, the beauty professionals and brand founders are the celebrities. In My Beauty Break , we'll dig into the behind-the-scenes details โ€” the money, the aha! moments, and the mistakes โ€” of the biggest brands in the industry. The following interview has been edited for length and clarity.

Danessa Myricks is your makeup artist's favorite makeup artist. When she launched her namesake brand years ago, her color cosmetics could be found at pro stores โ€” and in the kits of any artist who wanted to create a "look" (and not just the everyday fresh face). Her unconventional products were for unconventional (and striking) makeup.ย

All this is quite ironic when you consider that the self-taught Myricks calls herself an "accidental makeup artist."

If we rewind time, her career started as a sales and marketing director for a company that published hair magazines. "I was the corny nerd girl in the corner," she tells Allure . "There was nothing cool or trendy about me at all." She would often see makeup artists come in for shoots and marvel at their vibe and the joy and creativity radiating from them. After some years on the job, the magazine owner announced the company was closing and Myricks had 30 days to figure out what she was going to do next. "I was 30 at the time," she says, "so it wasn't like I was fresh out of school or anything." But, after a moment of reflection โ€” and a minor freakout over what she would do next โ€” Myricks saw she had the opportunity to follow her passion. That passion was (and still is!) makeup artistry. Thinking back to that time, she says, "I wanted to be excited to wake up every day and be passionate about what I'm doing. Freedom was always something that was this carrot in front of me โ€” just being free with my time, with my lifestyle."

So, Myricks did what any nerd would do โ€” she hit the books to learn all about the ins and outs of makeup artistry. Her former employer's connections would eventually lead her to some of her first (unpaid) gigs, which soon turned into paid ones, which then turned into masterclasses, which eventually led her to start her own brand.ย

Black and white image of Danessa Myricks applying makeup on a model.

Fast forward to today, and you can now find Danessa Myricks Beauty on Sephora's shelves .

We spoke to Myricks about her journey, how she built her brand, and some of the challenges she's still facing as a brand owner โ€” ones that she is happy to endure as the architect of what's turning out to be a beautiful legacy.

Allure : What were some of your first gigs as a makeup artist? Danessa Myricks: When I first started, it was about working for free. I honestly did a no-payment situation for almost a year because I really needed to get experienced. And luckily, there were two photographers that used to shoot for the magazine who knew me as one of the corporate people there. They knew I was a good worker, and they gave me an opportunity. Thankfully, over time people did allow me to actually touch them, and I learned โ€” I learned through doing.

One of those photographers, Eric Van Lockhart, used to shoot all of the hair campaigns back then, all of the Black hair-care brands. He did the perm boxes and all that stuff. He recommended me for a job at Luster Products. And that's when I thought I had arrived. I felt more confident after doing that job.

Your July 2024 Monthly Horoscope Is Here

Each Zodiac Sign's Unique Personality Traits

Your Sagittarius Monthly Horoscope for July 2024 Is Here

Allure : It's interesting you thought you had arrived because looking back it must feel like you "arrived" at just one step on what would be a huge journey. Myricks: It's so surreal, I can't even process it sometimes. If people only knew all of the things.

Allure : How would you describe your makeup aesthetic? Myricks: It's changed so much over the years. I think it's like this for everyone: When you start in an industry, you try to figure out who people think are the best. Then you just aspire to be that person. Back when I started, it was all about Sam Fine and Kevyn Aucoin, and so I was like, "I need to do makeup like that."ย

Clearly, I didn't in the beginning, but that was my aspiration. And so I did makeup a lot heavier. Back then, it was about making it look flawless with the makeup, and there was no retouching really that was happening back then. So it was like, "I need to look flawless out the gate."

One of the things that really stood out to me about their work was that you felt something when you looked at their finished work. It moved you emotionally. That was my aspiration. I didn't want to just put makeup on people. I wanted people to feel the work. Because that's what makes it different, and that's always been what has driven me in my artistry and in the development of my style over the years. If they're not feeling it, it's not good enough.

As I grew in the industry and as I was exposed to more, my style and my aesthetic have kind of evolved over time. And now I'm really about full-on freedom. There's no right or wrong. I want people to do what they feel like doing, but make it feel effortless, make it really represent who they are.

Allure : When did you realize that you needed to start your brand? Myricks: I did development for lots of other brands. I think one of the ones that I'm most proud of is with Benefit Cosmetics as a director of product innovation. I developed their [Editor note: iconic] brow collection, which launched in 2016. And after that, I was like, "This is great. This is a really wonderful experience." But in my experience, not just with them, but with all of the brands that I consulted for, there always seemed to be a limit as to what I could create. I was always creating for somebody else's vision.ย

I wanted to be able to tell my own story. I decided to leave Benefit and come back to New York and basically start from scratch again. I taught myself photography. I started developing one product at a time. And that's what led us to where we are today.

Allure : Where did your idea for products like Colorfix come from? Myricks: I did a lot of work with hair salons back [in the day] because they knew me from doing their photoshoots. After a while, people started to ask me if I would teach them [some of my techniques]. I started teaching and at the end of every session people were like, "OK, well, can I buy some product?" Throughout the entire presentation, I was always mixing things together, and layering things together. So I wound up mixing up concoctions to sell at the end of the classes.

ย That's literally where it started.

I would put together these little kits, like cream pigment and powder, or a cream, a pigment, and a glitter. Or I'd do a cream, a pigment, and a mixing medium. [I started] making little kits in my basement and then selling them at the end of classes, and at shows.

Allure : When would you say was your big break?

Myricks: I think there were multiple ones. Every moment I thought my whole world was falling apart and I was the biggest failure, was the breakthrough to the next phase of my life. Like losing that job. Were it not for that happening, I would never have made a decision to break away and do something different and creative.

If it wasn't for me being so burnt out and tired from being a freelance makeup artist and consultant, I would have never taken that position at Benefit. If it wasn't for that experience, that on-the-job training, I would not ever have been prepared to develop my own products. And if it wasn't for me being so horrible as a makeup artist after reintroducing myself to the world again, I would have never picked up a camera, and I would have never seen makeup the way I see it now.

Makeup artist Danessa Myricks applying makeup on a model on stage during a masterclass.

Allure : What has it been like going from seeing your products being embraced by makeup artists to now seeing them widely used by people everywhere? Myricks: It makes me emotional because being able to figure out ways to communicate our products to everyone has been very tricky for me. For so many years, I've mainly talked to artists. My whole conversation had to shift. It was like starting all over again because I had to really make [my products] digestible for everyone.

Now I get to see the average person use my products. I wanted to be able to shift the thinking about how people perceive makeup, how they use it, and how they play with it. To know that a housewife in Minnesota can have the same appreciation for Colorfix as the biggest artists in the world โ€” I can't even put words to that.

Allure : One thing I've noticed is that people have been getting more artistic with their makeup. I think that it really did help set the stage for Danessa Myricks Beauty to soar, especially since that artistry aspect is so very much tied to your brand.

Myricks: I couldn't be happier about that. And that's another thing, the pandemic, as horrifying as the whole thing was, it really set the stage for our brand to be seen in a different light as well. I think people completely shifted their idea about using makeup. People want it easy and effortless. People are ready to break free and have more time to experiment. I think that time really gave people a different level of appreciation for what our brand offers.

Allure : Do you have any tips for small brands looking for funding? Myricks: To this day we are completely self-funded. We have never been able to get funding at all. I work and get money and then I decide is it going to go to my household or is it going to go to the business. That's how the brand grew. It always feels uphill in that process.

So what I would say โ€” because this is a conversation I had to have with myself over and over again โ€” you can slow down if you need to, you can pause for a second if you need to, but just don't stop . That's really the advice that I would give, just to keep plowing at it, keep pushing, keep moving forward. The time will come. The opportunity will come and will eventually turn over. I know it sounds like corny advice, but that really is it. The moment is going to come differently, the journey is different for everyone.

Allure : How much time these days are you spending on your business versus makeup artistry versus photography? Or are all those things intertwined?

Myricks : They absolutely are. But I'm so glad that you asked because the other word of advice I would say is don't stop creating . I went through a moment of feeling completely overwhelmed by deadlines, and all of the business elements. I realized in those moments when I focus completely on [creative pursuits], the business is thriving. It almost seems like it would be the opposite. But when I'm creating, that's when everything moves forward .

Makeup artist Danessa Myricks laughing with model she is applying makeup on.

Now, I make sure that my week is split. The first part of my week is full-on, hardcore โ€” we're in the meetings, we're in all of the things. Then midpoint to the end of the week, I switch the script and I'm full-on about creating. I have a model waiting for me now. I say to myself, "You can't stop doing makeup. You can't stop moving your ideas about beauty forward because the brand won't move forward."ย

I really do work really hard to keep it balanced.

Writing An Artist Bio: The Ultimate Guide for Fine Artists

SHARE ARTICLE:

As a visual artist, you may not consider yourself a writer, and thatโ€™s OK.

But your Artist Bio is an important piece of writing you do need to nail down.

bio make up artist

You will need it for exhibition or gallery applications, artist websites, press releases, publicity materials, etcโ€ฆ

The good news is once you have it done and dusted, you wonโ€™t need to do it again!

At most, you will simply refine it over the years.

So read along, and letโ€™s get your Bio done rightโ€ฆ

Artist Statement and Artist Bio: Whatโ€™s the difference?

The two powerful tools you can use to communicate the meaning and intentions behind your art to your audience are your artist statement and artist bio.

Your artist statement is a great way to share your creative process, inspiration, and philosophy with your audience. It’s like a manifesto for your art, where you can dive deep into what drives you to create and what you hope to achieve through your work.

On the other hand, your artist bio is like a snapshot of your artistic journey so far. It’s a potted history of your life as an artist, highlighting your achievements, experiences, and background. Your artist bio serves as an introduction to your work, and it helps your audience understand your perspective as an artist.

In other words, while your artist statement focuses on your art and medium, your artist bio is all about YOU as an artist.

When you introduce your art in your artist statement, it’s like saying, “Hey folks, check out my art!” But when it comes to your bio, you’re basically saying:

๐Ÿ™‹โ€โ™‚๏ธ “Hey folks, here’s a little bit about me!”

Important Considerations Before Crafting Your Artist Bio

We get it – talking about yourself can feel awkward, but the details about your passion, inspiration, and dreams are just as crucial as your artwork. People are naturally curious creatures, so it’s no surprise that viewers and readers want to know a bit about you. After all, your art is a reflection of who you are as a person and an artist.

There are a few things you might want to consider before you get started with your artist bio. Let’s go through them together!

โœ…  Itโ€™s OK to show a glimpse of your personality.

Starting off your artist bio with a hook is crucial to grabbing your readers’ attention.

A little bit of humor can go a long way in reeling them in and warming them up to both you and your art. So why not give it a shot and inject some personality into your bio?

โœ…  Your artist bio should not be too corporateโ€”itโ€™s not a CV or a resume.

When it comes to crafting your artist bio, it can be tempting to list out every single accomplishment and accolade you’ve received throughout your career.

But most of the time, less is often more.

Instead of overwhelming your readers with a laundry list of accomplishments, it’s important to be selective and choose only the most noteworthy and relevant highlights of your career. This will not only make your bio more concise and easier to read, but it will also give your readers a better sense of who you are as an artist.

Crafting Your Artist Bio: Tips and Tricks for Fine Artists

Okay, it’s time to roll up our sleeves and get started on writing that artist bio.

bio make up artist

To help you out, we’ve gathered some handy tips and tricks that will make the process easier and more effective.

โœ…  Write in the third person (e.g., he, she, his, hers, they)

Have you ever considered what someone else might write about you if given the task of crafting your bio?

It may seem like a strange exercise, but putting yourself in someone else’s shoes and imagining what they might say about you can be an incredibly helpful tool in crafting your own bio.

This exercise can help you identify the most important aspects of your career and artistry from an outsider’s perspective, as well as highlight any strengths or unique qualities that may not have been immediately apparent to you.

So, what might someone else write about you? Perhaps they would focus on your bold use of color or your ability to create intricate and detailed works of art.

Maybe they would highlight your commitment to environmentalism and the use of sustainable materials in your artwork. Or perhaps they would focus on your professional accomplishments and exhibitions.

Regardless of what they might say, the exercise of imagining someone else’s perspective can help you gain clarity and insight into your own career and artistic identity.

Use these insights to inform your own bio and make it truly stand out to potential clients and fans.

โœ…  Keep it concise and straight to the point.

As a fine artist, you want your artist bio to leave a lasting impression on your readers – but you don’t want to bore them with a lengthy essay. That’s why it’s important to use simple and direct sentences that will keep your readers engaged and interested in what you have to say.

By using concise language and avoiding complex sentence structures, you can make your bio easy to read and understand. This will not only help to hold your reader’s attention, but it will also give them a better understanding of who you are as an artist and what you have to offer.

So, the next time you sit down to write your artist bio, remember to keep it simple and direct. Your readers will thank you for it. ๐Ÿ˜‰

โœ…  Be creative.

Your creativity is your greatest asset – and that should extend to your artist bio as well. While it can be tempting to stick to a standard format or template, your bio is an opportunity to showcase your unique personality and artistic style.

So, don’t be afraid to get creative with your bio!

Your bio can be a combination of

โžก๏ธ where you came from

โžก๏ธ where you went to school

โžก๏ธ your inspirations

โžก๏ธ your artistic process and philosophy

โžก๏ธ your interests

โžก๏ธ and your accomplishments as a human being.

All of these add more dimension to your narrative. You can tackle different angles, but make sure that the subject is always your artistic development.

But let’s be real, how can you make your bio stand out and tell a compelling story?

One way is to use timelines and narrative progression to organize your thoughts and show your artistic journey in a clear and coherent manner. Break down your career highlights into different time periods, so readers can see how your work has evolved over time and how you have grown as an artist.

To get started, make sure your timelines are easy to follow. Use bullet points or subheadings to separate different phases of your career and highlight your key achievements and milestones from each era.

And don’t forget about the importance of narrative progression – by framing your career journey as a progression from past to present , you can help readers understand how each phase of your career has influenced the next.

With these tips in mind, you can create a killer artist bio that showcases your artistic development and highlights the unique qualities that make you a standout in your field.

Should Previous Non-Art Related Degrees and Jobs Be Included in an Artist Bio?

bio make up artist

The answer is simple – yes, you may include them! Your bio is the perfect place to share your unique journey as an artist.

The trick to including non-art-related experiences in your bio is to connect them with your current artistic career . How did those experiences shape your perspective and inspire your work? For instance, if you worked in the field of child welfare, how did that experience influence your artistic vision?

Including non-art-related experiences can make you a more interesting artist and give viewers a deeper understanding of who you are as a person. It’s not just about your art degree but about the experiences that make you who you are today.

When writing your bio, don’t keep your previous jobs and degrees separate from your artistic career. Integrate them into your story and tell your audience how they have impacted your artistic process.

What’s the Perfect Length for Your Artist Bio?

If you have been wondering how long your biography should be, we’ve got you covered!

Here are some pointers to help you decide on the length of your artist bio:

โœ… Your biography can be as short as a few paragraphs or as long as two to three or four pages. It really depends on how much information you want to include.

โœ… If you want to keep it short and sweet, a brief summary or biographical statement at the back of your portfolio or on your website is perfectly fine. This gives a quick overview of your background and accomplishments.

โœ… If you want to provide more detail, an extensive biography can be very helpful and effective in making sales. This can be from three to seven pages long, written in the third person, and laid out in a magazine-style format. This type of bio is ideal for artists who want to give collectors a more in-depth look at their life and career.

โœ… Your biography is a document that can evolve over time and can grow or shrink in length. Keep it up to date with your latest achievements.

โœ… Sharing your background, life, and career development can help establish additional credibility for you as an artist. Potential buyers find it fascinating, and it creates a deeper connection with them.

โœ… You can combine your short bio with elements of your artist statement to weave together your work and life. This can make your bio a little lengthier, but it gives readers a more holistic view of your artistic vision and process.

There’s no one-size-fits-all answer to how long your artist bio should be. Consider your goals and the level of detail you want to share, and use that as a guide when crafting your biography.

Oops! Don’t Make These Mistakes When Writing Your Artist Bio

Did you make these mistakes when writing your artist bio? Don’t worryโ€”it’s not too late to fix them! Let’s take a look at some of the most common pitfalls to avoid when crafting your artist bio.

โœ…  Poor Writing

When it comes to your artist bio, it’s crucial to make sure it’s well-written and polished. You don’t want any errors or awkward sentences to distract your audience from your amazing work.

So, take the time to proofread it multiple times and make sure it’s free of any mistakes. Even small writing errors can give off an unprofessional impression to your readers.

โœ…  Sharing too much information

While it can be tempting to include every detail of your life, it’s best to stick to information that is relevant to your artistic identity. Avoid sharing too much information about your personal life or unrelated accomplishments and instead focus on highlighting your artistic achievements and aspirations.

โœ…  Lack of personality

Let your artist bio be a reflection of your one-of-a-kind personality and style. Avoid using generic terms and concepts that make you sound like a robot. Instead, infuse your bio with your unique voice and perspective on life to make it stand out.

Ready to share your Artist Bio with the world? Here are a few things you should do first

So, youโ€™ve written your artist bio, and youโ€™re eager to share it with the world. But before you hit that publish button, there are a few crucial steps you should take to make sure your bio is polished and ready to impress.

โœ…  Read, reread, and proofread

Have you read your artist bio out loud yet? This is a crucial step in making sure that your bio sounds both natural and professional while still being approachable to your audience.

Now, chances are, your first draft is going to need a lot of trimming down. That’s why it’s important to reread it multiple times and make changes to any areas that need improvement.

And don’t forget to ask a friend to proofread it for you as well. They can give you valuable feedback on how to make it look and sound even better. Trust us, it’s always helpful to have a fresh set of eyes review your work!

โœ…  Have a fellow artist review your artist bioโ€”hear that second opinion ๐Ÿ˜‰

bio make up artist

It’s always a good idea to have someone else take a look at your artist bio before sharing it with the world. And who better to turn to than a fellow artist? They can give you honest and objective feedback that can help you refine your message and make sure that your bio truly reflects your identity as an artist and your body of work.

So, if you have an artist friend who’s willing to take a look, don’t hesitate to send them a copy of your bio and ask for their thoughts. Ask them what they loved about it and what could be improved. Their insights could help clarify your message and make your bio even more effective.

How Often Should You Update Your Artist Bio?

Well, the answer is pretty straightforward – as often as you need to!

Your artist bio is an important tool for introducing yourself to potential buyers, galleries, and employers, so it should be kept up to date as your career progresses.

Revisiting your biography every year is a great way to ensure it still accurately represents your current work and achievements. As you continue to create new pieces and gain recognition, you’ll want to make sure your biography is showcasing your latest and greatest.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of using an outdated biography. You may have created a biography early on in your career, and it may not be relevant anymore. That’s okay! Take some time to review and update it, and make sure it reflects your current work and accomplishments.

Your artist bio is a BIG deal.

And the good news is that once you have it ready, you feel a BIG relief.

It’s what can set you apart from the rest and help you connect with your audience. So, when you sit down to write it, take your time and put in the effort to craft something that really reflects who you are as an artist.

Your bio can add that extra layer of interest and intrigue to your art, so make it count!

Beauty is so much more than just the clothes we  wear, or the  makeup we  put

on. It’s each person’s  individual personality,  the way we express ourselves,  and

what makes us feel unique.  There is no one  definition of beauty – and thus

there should  not be one makeup look that fits all. Each application I do is

assessed according to multiple  factors,  including personality, comfort

level with  makeup, and  personal image – and I tailor my work  accordingly. The

result  is a satisfied client that feels  as beautiful and unique on the  outside as

they do on  the inside.

I am a freelance Makeup Artist based in Southern Ontario, and while I enjoy working in all sectors of the beauty industry, my passion is bridal, and what led me to start The Bridal Glam Co (@thebridalglamco). Thoughtfully curating my team of artists over the years, we now have the pleasure of servicing up to 100 brides each season!

My love for makeup and beauty has been with me my whole life, and after graduating from University with a degree in Marketing and working for a film production company for five years, a chance opportunity with the makeup department on a film set helped push me to follow my passion and go back to school at the School of Professional Makeup in Toronto where I became certified as a Professional Makeup Artist. Studying Advanced Makeup Artistry, I learned the world of makeup from the ground up, and in addition to beauty, theatre and film makeup, I also became certified in the art of airbrush foundation.

In the past I have had the pleasure of freelancing for Cineplex Entertainment and MAC Cosmetics, and the opportunity to work with large beauty brands including Revlon Professional, Benefit, Urban Decay, and Lancome. and well as large events like The Country Music Awards of Ontario and Canada Philippine Fashion Week.

I love learning new things, being inspired, and creative people. I take pride in creating beautiful work, and hope I can be fortunate enough to do what I Iove for the rest of my life.

Create Your Best Instagram Artist Bio

by Carolyn Edlund

Creating an outstanding Instagram bio as an artist involves more than just filling in the blanks. Hereโ€™s how to make the most of your profile.

Ready to create an amazing artist bio, thoughtfully written to grab attention, convey your identity, and attract followers? Check out our YouTube video above, filled with tips and tricks to make your best bio ever.

Writing your bio is a way of attracting the right audience in a few impactful sentences. Let’s dive into some key strategies that will help your profile stand out and complement the advice provided in the video.

Craft a Compelling Bio

Your Instagram bio is like a digital handshake that gives visitors a snapshot of who you are as an artist. With only 150 characters to work with, every word counts. Use these tips to make the most of this limited space:

Be Concise but Share Your Personality

Describe your art style, medium, and what drives you creatively, using words that resonate with your target audience. For instance, instead of saying โ€œI paint,โ€ say something like โ€œWatercolor artist capturing the serene beauty of natureโ€ to instantly convey your specialty. Your bio should also reflect your artistic persona. Are you whimsical, serious, avant-garde? Let that shine through your choice of words. An engaging bio might read, โ€œWhimsical illustrator bringing fairytales to life.โ€

Use Keywords and Hashtags

Within your bio, try to incorporate relevant keywords and hashtags that potential followers might search for. This boosts your profile’s discoverability. If you are in a niche, like โ€œabstract sculptureโ€ or โ€œdigital surrealism,โ€ make sure these terms are in your bio.

Maximizeย  Your Profile Photo

Your profile photo is often the first visual element people notice.ย  When selecting a photo to use, whether it’s a professional headshot, a logo, or a standout piece of your art, make sure it represents you as an artist. And keep in mind that even though you have a small circular space, you should choose an image that wows as a thumbnail. Using the same photo across multiple platforms helps in building a recognizable brand.

Make the Most of Links

Instagram allows you to place links in your bio, which is a prime spot for driving traffic to your other platforms. You will want to link to your portfolio, thereby directing visitors to your website or online gallery where they can explore your work in depth. Want a more extensive menu to share with your followers? Tools like Linktr.ee , LinkInBio , and Shorby let you create a landing page with multiple links from you single bio link.

Visual Storytelling Through Your Grid

Your Instagram grid is essentially your portfolio on display. First, plan your posts. Think about how each will look next to the others. Aim for a consistent color scheme, style, or theme that reflects your artistic vision. Mix up your posts with different types of content, including close-ups of your work, full pieces, and behind-the-scenes shots. This not only keeps your feed interesting, but also gives followers a deeper insight into your process. Then, experiment and adjust. Donโ€™t be afraid to try different layouts and themes until you find what works best for you. Use tools like Planoly or Preview to plan and visualize your grid before posting.

Use Highlights

Instagram Stories Highlights are a great way to keep your most important content easily accessible. Create highlights based on different aspects of your work, such as specific projects, behind-the-scenes footage, or exhibitions. Then design eye-catching covers that are visually appealing and consistent with your brandโ€™s aesthetic. Regularly update your highlights to keep your profile fresh and engaging.

Engage with Your Audience

An engaging profile is not just about aesthetics; itโ€™s also about interaction. Take the time to reply to comments on your posts. This shows that you value your audience and fosters a sense of community. If followers share posts about your work, re-share them to your Stories. This not only shows appreciation but also builds a deeper connection.

Al Schultz

Al Schultz, who worked as a makeup artist for some of the top TV shows of the 1960s and ’70s and was married to Vicki Lawrence for five decades, has died. He was 82.

Schultz died June 19 at his home in Long Beach, California, according to his publicist. A cause of death was not given.

His big break came in 1968 when the Makeup Artists Union sent him to CBS Television City. There, he was noticed by Carol Burnett as he was walking by her dressing room, sparking a partnership that lasted for a decade. As head of makeup for The Carol Burnett Show, Schultz was responsible for Burnett, Lawrence and other castmembers. It was while he was working on the show that he met and fell in love with Lawrence.

In 1972, Schultz was promoted to head of West Coast makeup at CBS, becoming at 30 the youngest ever to hold the position. He was responsible for several CBS programs, including The Sonny and Cher Show and Norman Lear’s All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Good Times and Maude. He also worked on The Merv Griffin Show, doing makeup for guest stars.

He also did the makeup for Elvis Presley’s final television concert.

In the early ’80s, Schultz decided to step back from his schedule to spend more time with Lawrence and their children, Courtney and Garrett, and to manage Lawrence’s career.

Born in 1942 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, Schultz was a college athlete, playing football at the University of Missouri until a knee injury ended his sports career. He then moved to Hollywood, initially working as a grip and camera dolly operator before finding his calling in makeup artistry.

He was passionate about sailboat racing and enjoyed spending time with Lawrence in Hawaii and at their Long Beach home. The couple would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Nov. 16.

Six of MAC's all-star artists on how they found makeup โ€” and then made a career out of it.

1. Terry Barber (London)

Global creative director of makeup artistry

Related Articles

Kering beautรฉ names cfo, wacky and wonderful couture beauty looks from days three and four in paris.

When an art school stint brought Barber face-to-face with the goth, punk, skinhead and mod subcultures of the ’80s on an everyday basis, “I thought, ‘all these tribes of people — I want to be part of that.'”

And so he was. MAC opened its first U.K. store in 1993 at Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge, and Barber was hired on the spot when he walked in asking for an application. “They were desperate for staff; it was like the whole world had come through the doors of Harvey Nichols to shop at the MAC counter,” recalled Barber, who quickly found community among his fellow artists at the counter. “We were the type of people who would probably never have gotten a job with another brand because of the way we looked, yet there we were, in the middle of a department store as part of this phenomenal brand that everyone was obsessed with — we felt like we were at the heart of something special.”

Now MAC’s global creative director of makeup artistry, Barber has cycled through a wide range of artistic signatures. “I’ve gone through a minimalist, no-makeup makeup stage; a maximalist stage, a Warhol ‘Factory girl,’ druggie-glamour era — the one thing I always explain to young artists is you can’t just have one look. You have to go from makeup that says something — even if it’s almost nothing — to the highest of glamour and experimentation.”

Music remains a key creative catalyst for Barber, who also often looks to comedy (he finds Brexit, for instance, not only deeply amusing but an abundant source of artistic inspiration), as well as movies. “I like beauty in the context of something — I’ve moved away from looking at pictures of perfectly done makeup; I like characters.”

Favorite MAC Product:

2. luisa sporkenbach (berlin).

Global senior artist

“It’s a little bit subtle — but always with a twist,” she decided, chalking up her instinct toward understated looks to the prevailing trend in Germany, though no creation of hers is complete without an unexpected accent.

“It could be eyeliner that’s extra-elongated, or experimenting with three lip liners instead of one to add more dimension — there’s always a little accessory,” she said, noting beigey-brown Stripdown is her favorite MAC lip pencil.

Having grown up roughly a two-hour drive from Berlin in Dresden, Sporkenbach was 17 years old when she first applied for an internship at MAC. “I went to a school that was more art-driven, and I needed to complete an art-based internship,” said Sporkenbach, who at that point had dabbled in theatrical and SFX makeup but was looking to cultivate more experience crafting editorial and everyday looks.

After an initial rejection (“they thought, ‘oh, she’s a little young,'”), an undeterred Sporkenbach secured the gig upon reapplying a few months later — and hasn’t looked back since. “My friends were my guinea pigs — I would invite them all to the counter to practice and just do the craziest makeup,” she said. “I never went to makeup school, so I learned everything with MAC.”

A winged liner loyalist when it comes to her own regimen, Sporkenbach’s favorite avenue for experimentation is through eyeliner. “I love playing with different shapes and styles that you wouldn’t wear on an everyday basis — it’s a challenge, but it’s fun,” she said.

Pinterest, TikTok and Instagram, meanwhile, offer a wellspring of inspiration for Sporkenbach, who often shares her own tutorials and takes on viral makeup styles. “I look at Pinterest a lot when I need inspiration; it motivates me to break my habits a little bit, go in a different direction and not just follow something — but create something myself using what’s in front of me in that moment.”

3. Romero Jennings (New York)

Director of makeup artistry

“As a starting designer with no funds, I was doing everything myself — the hair, the makeup — my friends and I would all be in the FIT bathroom getting a model ready, trying to make everything look as professional as possible,” recalled Jennings, who was born in Kingston, Jamaica, and raised in New York.

Fascinated by the avant-garde creations of Japanese fashion designers Yohji Yamamoto and Issey Miyake, Jennings moved to Japan after his undergraduate studies and began assisting makeup artists on fashion and editorial sets.

“When I got off the plane in Japan, there was this deja vu — it was like I had lived there before,” said Jennings, who nevertheless kept his hard-copy Japanese dictionary close during his five-year tenure abroad (“there was no internet back then!”).

He returned to New York during hip-hop’s ’90s video vixen era, transitioning to creating music video looks for the likes of Mary J. Blige, CeCe Peniston, Boyz II Men and more. “My biggest learning from that period was the importance of preparation as an artist,” said Jennings, for whom the lesson has a double meaning. “When your makeup kit is prepared, you feel calm, you feel confident — but also you need to prep the skin, which was still pretty novel then.”

A longtime Fix+ Primer and Setting Spray aficionado, Jennings has more recently added MAC’s Hyper Real Serumizer to his holy-grail skin-prep lineup. “I use it on every age, every skin type — it’s a game-changer,” he said, noting the product can be used as a finishing touch, too, for what he calls “glow stacking.”

“After you’ve finished the makeup, you go back in and tap Serumizer over the high points of the face to give it this amorphous dimension and shine.”

For Jennings, who considers both Jamaica and New York home in different ways, inspiration “always goes back to culture; whether it’s through food, dress, music — my dad is Jamaican and my mom is Latina, so in my house it was always a mixture of cultures; we’d have both reggae and Tito Carillo Quintet playing through the home.”

Today, Jennings’ vision for what he can accomplish through his craft only continues to grow. “I feel like I’m at the top of my game right now — who can say that after 30 years? MAC has given me that strength and that power,” he said.

4. Hannah Bennett (Amsterdam)

A trip to the theater in London’s West End when she was 12 years old was the impetus for Hannah Bennett’s creative career.

“We saw ‘The Lion King,’ which was incredible particularly in terms of its makeup, and I came out and said to my mum — ‘I want to be a makeup artist,'” said Bennett.

She made headway on her goal two years later, nabbing a weekend job as a face painter at her hometown zoo. “I’d set up my little stool in the Giraffe House every Saturday and paint kids’ faces for 50 pence — I saw it as a way for me to bring painting and people together,” said Bennett.

By then, she had already heard of MAC. Once she wrapped up art school and a subsequent makeup course, she was sure it was her dream company.

“[MAC] was super hard to get into in London back then,” said Bennett, whose freelance career eventually led her to a role at the MAC counter, after which she worked her way up to store manager, then a succession of roles in events and education, and an eventual move to Amsterdam.

“The beauty here is such a contrast from U.K. makeup trends; Amsterdam is very influenced by Scandinavian beauty, sort of the Matilda Djerf, ‘clean girl’ aesthetic — it’s a very practical look,” said Bennett, who has similarly developed an admiration for a less-is-more approach.

“Don’t get me wrong, I still love a good, brightly colored cut-crease, but I’ve evolved to appreciate the nuances of makeup more — how you can create big differences with less,” said Bennett, whose body of work also heavily incorporates hyper-feminine signatures.

“I love pastel colors, I love any kind of period dramas — Sofia Coppola’s ‘Marie Antoinette’ — 17th-century beauty in general.”

Also — a bold lip.

“I mix different lipsticks but my go-to would be a Locked Kiss Ink because they stay the whole day — you can eat, drink, and I’ll layer a [silky matte] lipstick on top to add an extra layer of intensity in the color,” said Bennett.

5. Shawn Xu (Shanghai)

National artistry associate director, China

Having grown up in a family of artists — his father was a lead singer in a band; his mother, a dancer — Xu found himself drawn to both avocations from a young age.

“As a student I performed classic drama and ballroom dance, for which I would use tanning cream, bronzer and foundation to enhance my features,” said Xu of his introduction to makeup. “I enjoyed experimenting with different looks and products to go with the themes of my performances.”

As Xu developed his style, bright colors became his M.O. “Yellows, greens, blue and purple — cooler colors are my favorite,” said Xu, who also finds satisfaction in wielding seemingly unlikely color combinations. “Maybe a light blue with a dark yellow; creamy green with cherry red.”

Some of his most fantastical looks, however, have been born out of everyday inspirations.

“One must have sharp eyes in order to observe the little things in the world,” said Xu, for whom recalling famous structures like The Louvre and Sydney Opera House can spur visions of graphic lines and unique textures. “My favorite thing to observe is architectural design — structure, space, and changes in light, shadow and color.”

Among his favorite makeup hacks is to combine concealer, peach-colored lipstick and liquid highlighter to conceal dark circles, while adding dimension to the face. In fact, he finds that blurring the lines between traditionally separate makeup steps is a lesser-known key to creating a seamless finish.

“While contouring the face, I’ll mix highlighter, setting powder and blush to instantly achieve a smooth and full skin texture,” said Xu, whose trick plays well with the ever-popular “porcelain skin” makeup look.

“We have many makeup trends in China; there is the Korean beauty look, which is fresh and favored by the young generation, though they are also very fond of traditional Chinese makeup and sharing their oriental culture through water-painting colors, soft lines and shiny elements,” said Xu, who himself dabbles in all of the above and is always seeking how to create “small details which can completely transform a look.”

6. Georgina Padilla (Mexico City)

Regional artist training director, Latin America

“They both have many, many levels,” laughed Padilla.

Having grown up with a mother who worked in TV, Padilla was exposed to the world of makeup from a young age. “When I was 12 I used to take lipstick and draw on my face a labyrinth, then fill in the blank spaces with black — it looked like a tribal mask,” she said.

When college rolled around, Padilla decided to major in psychology with a minor in psychoanalysis, though during her summer breaks she would tag along to work with her mother, learning how to do hair and makeup and eventually freelancing in both after graduating.

“Every time I was doing hair for a shoot, the people doing the makeup would be from MAC. I would always think, ‘you know — I’d like to go there,'” recalled Padilla, who shortly after landed a MAC artist job at a Mexico City store.

“I use my degree a lot, because makeup and beauty are very much about how you feel about yourself,” said Padilla, whose signatures include brown hues, monochrome, and androgynous concepts.

“Makeup doesn’t have gender anyways, but part of why I love brown shades is because they can make your face a little bit more masculine, or more feminine,” said Padilla, gesturing to a tattoo on her left forearm which depicts half of Michelangelo’s David, conjoined with half of the Winged Victory (or Nike) of Samothrace.

“It’s like a nonbinary version of the sculptures,” she said. “These are the two energies everybody has in some combination. Being in touch with my masculinity and femininity without having to define myself as one thing, and loving myself as I am, has been a long journey — this tattoo represents that.”

So, too, does her artistry.

“I like doing makeup that enhances whatever people want to enhance — not necessarily within the norm or traditional forms of gender expression,” she said.

It’s a liberating approach she hopes to impart to the next generation of makeup artists through her role as a training director. Her other hot tip?

“Listen first — it’s the best skill any makeup artist can learn.”
